Well I finally got to work on my light. Cut out the bad ballast and did some checking with my volt meter. Turns out that I have Shunted Sockets. The tubes I have will not work with Shunted Sockets. So I'm back to replacing my Sockets (Tombstones.)

Looking for suggestions where to purchase them. If possible I would like to find some like are in my Maxlite fixtures. They have Hot and neutral both wired on one end, the other end has no contacts.
Maybe you're over-thinking this. Shunted sockets are the most commonly used in old fluorescent T8 fixtures. That's why they make double-end powered LED tubes...so that you dont have to change out the sockets. Find the right sockets can be a pain because they come in different sizes, heights, mounting methodes, etc.... It's much easier to get new tubes...double-end powered.

I was here at the beginning of this post as a lurker and ordered the Lumegen t8's . I started having issues with a few of them having about 1' sections going out on the tubes in the second year . Now here I am 5 years later with at least 75% of my lighting completely out.I didnt expect them to last forever but they get used maybe 10 hours a week max over the 5 years of having them in my pole barn. I contacted lightup earlier this week but was told the warranty ended "back in 7-13-23" like that was ages ago. My fault for not contacting them sooner but I couldn't remember where I bought them from until I stumbled on this post again earlier this week. I'm not here to complain but to give my experience with that particular brand . I just ordered RAB as a replacement.

That *****. Maybe try to contact Lumegen directly?
There's a difference between these little companies like Lumegen that have to sell their products on Amazon, Walmart and Internet Sites and real lighting manufacturers that sell through professional channels. Ironically, RAB doesn't make their tubes either.

I've had the Barrina lights for about a year now and very happy with them. I have a roughly 900 sq ft 3-car garage with a 14ft ceiling. Ended up installing 11 of the 4 ft-5000k-5k lumens whereas previously had 6 standard light fixtures with 2-100W bulbs in each. Some of the Amazon reviews said their LEDs burned out relatively quickly but I haven't had that issue. Also, others mentioned that the lights interfered with their garage door opener signal but I haven't had a problem my 2 Liftmaster garage door openers with MyQ. So overall very pleased with these as they were relatively easy to install and for only about $120, they were low-risk. It's also easy to add more by linking them together if you need even more light (before-after shot below).

Now that it's been about 3 years, any updates on the Barrina lights? I'm leaning towards purchasing these for my 28x24 2 car garage with 12' ceilings:

Barrina LED Shop Light, 8FT 72W 9000LM 5000K, Daylight White, V Shape, Clear Cover, Hight Output, Linkable Shop Lights, T8 LED Tube Lights, LED shop lights for garage 8 foot with plug (Pack of 10)

I think I'm going to do the same with my garage addition.

How many are you going to go with? Mine is essentially 24x30

I went with this exact kit that I had previously linked to. 10 pack of 8' T8 fixtures. My thinking is 5 runs of 16', evenly spaced out above the vehicles for consistent light output and minimal shadows since I often detail in my garage and currently have lots of shadows/dark areas when working on the sides of the vehicle.

This is old but gold! I'm thinking of upgrading some lighting in our garage, this post has been helpful. But I must check the current pricing of these bulbs.

Had some catching up to do in here! Lots of exciting updates. New car looks spectacular! I love the color and I can't wait to see it with the new wheels installed, those are really going to set it off nicely. The new lights will be a cool improvement too. What color temp did you end up going with? I lost track at some point hahaha.

I have had those in my cart. Want to use them in my home garage and basement.
My order arrived a few weeks ago. Trying to coordinate with my electrician to get them installed...should be within the next few weeks!

I Have not been here for a while, I just wanted to come back to say, When I 1st bought LEDs for my Garage build back in 2016 or so... I bought The recommended LEDMyplace T8's. Mine are on a lot... Probably 8-10hrs a day. I am just now needing to replace some that have started flickering....
I added some additional fixtures in 2020... and Used These Sunco's From Amazon. And they have also been good so far....
Any other suggestions for a Single end T8 5000k that i might look at in the $5.99 price range (shipped)? I really only need 10 of them

Pulled the trigger on the Barrina 8fts at 5000k, got 2x10packs for 20 total fixtures. $335.98, so about $16 per light.

This is going in my 24w x 36l x 12H garage. Probably a couple extra going in the loft

That will be plenty of light. I'm 32w x 28d x 10h with 16 4' 5000k fixtures and while there is plenty of light I will be adding another row of 4 - 4' fixtures to add a bit more light along the back wall. I have 2-10w garage doors with a row of windows along the top that helps alot during day light when the doors are closed - usually 1 roll up door is open when I am inside working.

Windows I don't have, sadly

I need to replace 22, double 4' t8 to LEDs as the ballasts continue to fail. So I need 44 bulbs, at least as bright as what I have now. Going to remove failing ballasts and direct wire.

Current Philips Fluorescents are rated at 2600 Lumens, but with cheap ballasts I'm guessing less, like <2200. The products available at home depot are only 1700 lumens.

So Looking at these:
4 ft. LED T8 Tube - 4000 Kelvin - 2200 Lumens - Type B - Operates Without Ballast

Thoughts? What have others used?

1700 lumens of the LED tube are the equivalent to the 2600 lumen T8 lamp. The 2200 lumen tube will be much brighter than the T8. Hint...dont get the PLT branded ones, get a name brand like Satco, Halco, Eiko, Philips, LedVance, etc....

Thanks. I see that 1700 lumens at 180* dispersion is equivalent to 2600 at 360*, with waste/reflector.

Looking at these Philips for $8 each. 1800 L, 12.5W

Lowes has these GE in store for $4.38 each (3x 20 pks)
GE (Savant systems as of 2020) stuff any good?

Well I went ahead with the Philips bulbs for 2x the cost of the Savant before your post. Not looking forward to rewiring all the fixtures on 12' ceiling.

I used this rickety, old thing when I hung my lights. Belonged to my FIL, was a bit sketchy at times but it worked out great. Just pulled myself along - carefully. Granted my ceiling is not 12', only 10'.

I bought a lot of the 4ft fixtures in Dec 2020. I linked/plugged them together and mounted them to 1/3's and mounted the 1x3's to the underside of my steel scissor trusses with 1/4 20 bolts. I'm now faced with a bunch of burned out 4' fixtures. Being honest I'm kind of disapointed @ the # of failed lights and how short the longevity was. This inside an insulated, heated, and air conditioned space so no adverse condtions to speed up failure.
Yeah we work a lot of hours- but thats not supposed to matter with led's.
Because of how I designed the install I have no option but to replace with the same product without ripping everything down 17' up in a working shop. Like others I thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread when I initially installed them. Hey they were cheap and bright- until they weren't.
YMMV- your mileage may vary

I used the T5 6500k super brights. Another bundle ordered but not happy about the life I got out of them.

I'm looking for advice/opinions on my lighting - my space is 40 x 60 x 16 - the ceiling will be white metal - walls will be white painted wood. These are the lights that my electrician is recommending - Metalux
I was using the Acuity Visual Lighting Tool and tried to find a 'similar' light spec-wise. It recommends 12 of these. I'm honestly kind of 'in the dark' here (get it?).

Without checking, it sounds about right...maybe a little high.
What foot-candle level are you shooting for?

I put 100 fc in the calculator based on posts here. I honestly have ZERO clue what is good.
I have found 50 fc measured at the work plane to be good. For me the work plane is the top of my table saw. I have 8 LED 6000 lumens panels 2x4 in a 24x28x11 space. The light is very even, no glare etc. I used a lighting calculator and the calculated results matched final measurements.

For reference, a school classroom is about 30-35fc. A retail store is about 40-45fc. For intricate work in an auto shop, 100 is good, but not necessary from the overhead lights. General illumination should be around 45-50fc and then task lighting to fill in where necessary. 100fc for overall illumination is overkill. But, of course, its your space and you can do what you like.

I ended up buying the Barrina LED 4ft lights

IMG-4383-HEIC.jpg

I ended up fitting 8 of these LED’s above my workbench

IMG-5362-heic.jpg

And 18 on the ceiling

IMG-5259-heic.jpg

IMG-5251-heic.jpg

12 in the middle section of the ceiling and 3 each at the end sides of the skylights, I’ve only had these fitted a few months back so can comment on durability but I’m very pleased with the light output they give

Daily deal at HD. 4-foot T8 fixture + bulbs (3600 lumens) for $29.69:

The housing and bulbs are both UL listed.

Bulb specs state 4000K, 14W/1800 lumens each, 83 CRI, 120 beam angle.

Any thoughts?

For those of you upgrading your lighting, what was your previous power consumption versus your new power consumption? For example, if you had 8' fluorescent tubes and replaced with LED, did you reduce your power consumption? Or did you get brighter fixtures and/or more fixtures and there was no power savings?

It'd be helpful to include this data in your garage solutions for those of us looking to replace when estimating costs and needs.
