A thread about strippers.
"" from that thread ↓↓

I've bought 10 sets of these for the guys in our shop. They probably strip 150-400 times a day. So far everyone loves them, three months in and they are holding up well. At the price, if we get 9-12 months use I'd be happy.

Bear in mind we strip wire all day most days while building industrial control panels so our use is very heavy compared to most.

Just to be clear, my reply was not about the Knipex, it was about the Fello version of strippers.

I bought a pair of the Klein Katapult today from home depot. Looked nice and seem to work alright except when the two jaws don't always line up. Not sure if the machining is off or what but it seems like every so often the jaws don't line up perfect when you clamp down on them. I'll use them a little bit more and see what happens before I email Klein to see if there is an issue.

This is what I use mostly. Have some of the same issues though mine is an Ideal. Gets the job done.

Nothing I have tried beats this guy, or the Knipex version. Single tool cuts and strips - and does both very well (and fast) with small practice.

I seem to be the only one on G.J to use this tool, so for your toolaholics, here is something to try for the collection.

The small simple wire strippers are the 'best' for working on cars/trucks.

3 out of every 4 times or more that I have to repair a wire connection its in a place I can barely get the smallest wire stripper.

No way you are getting a big ol 'automatic' wire stripper in there, those are functionally useless.

Agreed. I have an assortment of Klein and Ideal manual strippers for different guage wires, and that's what I use most. There's no excuse for nicking a wire if you've got any amount of skill/practice using the tool. Automatic strippers are for production type work where you've got dozens or hundreds of identical leads to strip. They're just a PITA when you're only doing a few.

After reading this thread I bought the Irwin auto stripper, because
1) I like strippers
2) it was only $20
3) you don't know if there is a better tool unless you try it

Part way into the first use I noticed that the tool had a severe fault; It is made for non-correct handed people. This makes it basically useless as your looking at the back side.
Using it backwards, I wasn't terribly impressed with its operation anyhow. Not bad but not any better than plier type.

Yes I have the Knipex version in my main tool box at work. It's very similar to the Bost. If you get one of these - resist the temptation to cut hard wire with them, they don't like that.

You can also find them cheap from Asia under different brand names. Many of them perfectly usable.

I really like an end stripper. You get it set properly once and you can do a whole bunch of similar gauge wires at once which is usually the case for me. The pull is in the same direction as cutter that cuts the insulation.

Mine are Omega (pretty old) but here are some similar ones from Knipex. http://knipex-tools.com/index.php?id=1023&page=group_detail&parentID=1363&groupID=1376

I also have the Klein Katapult too and like them for regular electrical work.

I have two pair, one at work and one at home, with no issues. Do the cutting edges not line up, or the openings for wire?
