It depends on the tool for me. I keep my circular saw in the blown plastic case and my jig saw, but most everything else goes in drawers, or cabinets.

Tools that go on job sites normally stay in their containers.
In the shop I normally leave them out of it because they do not need the protection like when the travel but that also depends on how good the box it.
If it makes good use of the space inside, holds also attachments etc. I use the box also in the shop.
So far I am saving the boxes I will not use anymore to repurpose
them for storage or I donate them.

You can cut the guts out of them and use them for other stuff if you don't need the case for the tool itself. That can be handy.

I've done that with a few and use them for rarely used stuff like my drywall screw gun that I use about every 5 years. Some oddly sell pretty well on Ebay and I've unloaded a few that way. Shipping cost kills most of those chances. Most sit empty in my basement until I eventually forget what came in them and I....well I wish I could say I throw them away, but I just restack them just in case.

I haven’t had a tool come in a plastic case for a long time really.

Most of mine come in soft side bags or nothing at all.

I keep some of them. My Milwaukee circular saw came in a real PITA case. The saw has to be adjusted exactly a certain way, or it won't fit. Then, you get to fight with the rubbery cord to get it in place and close the lid. I swear the case is four times the size of the tool, yet there's precious little space inside. I don't know why they fall down on the case/bag design. On some tools, it's like they forgot it has a cord, so you end up sharply folding the cord where it comes out of the tool. Good way to cause a premature failure of the cord.

What the others said. Some of them are pretty nice and I keep them but others are stupidly designed and go in the recycling bin. I have one metal case that an old 12v Dewalt drill came in that I have my new 20v drill in. I like it because it holds the charger, extra battery and some bits all together. It is the only tool I will regularly take with me to help someone out so its nice to have it all in one place.

All of the corded Milwaukee stuff I use has a removable cord. It stores much easier and makes for stupid simple replacement when damaged.

I keep tools in the cases. I have limited cabinet space and find it easier to stack and store them that way.

Depends. I only keep the ones that contribute to my organization/tidiness efforts. For instance, a drill by itself? The case gets tossed, and the drill goes in the drill drawer. But a dremmel with 1000 tiny bits, wrenches, etc? That one stays in the case. My AC gauge set with hoses that flop everywhere? That one stays in the case too.

I have two Milwaukee removable cords- my SawZall, and my 1/2" drill. The others aren't (easily) removable. I always liked the idea of them, though, and you can buy long ones.

My stuff gets transported around quite a bit, so I generally keep the case or box to both protect the tool and to protect everything else from getting damaged in transport. And I usually load up the container with related bits or blades, everythign for the tool in that box. So it becoems a sort of organizer, too.
