I have been a little inactive here again after doing a ton of work in my old garage. You can check out that remodel HERE. After years of dealing with all kinds of stuff out in that garage, I had finally got it "done" with heat, lighting, power, and storage. Just in time for our house to get broken into and robbed. That pushed us to move which we were already thinking about before it happened. Probably were not going to do anything for a couple years, but that's life and it all worked out OK so far.

We loved our first house, but needed more garage, and more space. We were very close to our neighbors and while we got along fine with them, we just wanted more space. So I told our realtors it has to have a 3 car garage, and either a building on site, or enough room to put a building on site. Of course we were limited by budget and location (because of work), but they came though with some solid options. I pretty much had made up my mind before we even looked, but as soon as we saw this one we knew. We had a bit of a nightmare with the selling of our old house. It was all due to a shady lender on the buyers side. Luckily we had very understanding sellers on the new place and were able to close after months of BS and us renting it for a short time.

Here are a couple pics of the garage when we did the inspection.

If my memory serves, the garage is about 31' wide, 21' deep and has 11' ceilings. The lighting is workable for now, but I have no idea whats up with that wiring, and I want it brighter of course. Gas heat is nice to already have all ready to go as well. We will see how well it is able to keep up with these IL winters, but I think it will be fine. I need to add a sub panel for some 220v power, and more outlets. It has 4 I think around which is pretty good for a standard garage, but not near enough for someone who does serious work.

Quick specs on the rest of the house, its about 2,300 square feet plus a full unfinished basement. 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath with a rough in the basement for another bathroom. It is on a touch over an acre, and I am considering buying the ~0.5 acre that is on the one side. Its a small subdivision outside a small town. We absolutely love it out here, and it feels like we are on vacation every day. Just so peaceful.

Anyway back to the garage. I haven't really done much yet since we more or less just moved in. I added a 4 post lift for some extra storage.

Got my SC on it for the first time

I removed the opener (for now) so I could get it higher. I am 6' 4" so I need as much height as I can get :)

Hung up the casters out of the way. Yes it bugs me they are crooked :(
i-LPx2kF9-X3.jpg

After a ton of screwing around I finally got some shelving units. Don't ask.

Still a huge mess, but getting a LOT better here.
i-RtKHXKW-X3.jpg

First time in my life I have ever had all of my vehicles in one garage!
i-NTxCLFJ-X3.jpg

Last weekend I picked up a new toy to help around the property (yard ****, pulling bushes, snow plowing, etc.) and to have some fun with
i-s9V52NV-X3.jpg

All of the plow stuff, minus the winch. The were out of stock, so I need to pick it up now that they are in.
i-KjBX6WN-X3.jpg

Still able to fit everything inside!!! Don't mind the wife's car, I was putting in some new headlights and OEM fog lights for her. Its dark in the country :)
i-fhdwzDd-X3.jpg

That's about all for now, which I know is not much. Next up on the to-do list is power for sure. I need to land a sub panel out there so I can get back to welding on my car. I want to replace/repair the outlets that are already out there since some have been hit with ****. Then I will surface mount new stuff from the sub panel. I won't go as crazy as I did in the old house since the plan is to put up a building ASAP, but I will set it up nice. After that I am going to guess new LED lighting. Besides that I have some drywall repair to do, new coat of paint, small stuff like that. I miss how nice I had the old garage set up at the end, but it should be a much shorter time to get this one up to speed. Plus it is fantastic having so much more space!!!

Thanks for checking it out, and check back in for updates!

LOL, I have had a few civic's over the years. I really want to get another EF to do up nice and just hold onto. Hopefully one day I will. Not 2JZ over here, the SC is getting a turbo LS with a TH400. I am building it for Hot Rod Drag Week, and was planing on this year till the break in put a stop to that. So now I am hoping for 2020 while I watch the live feed this year.

Since I have some time I am actually going to redo the hot side. Everything is pulled out right now, trans is going to get built Saturday.

A lot of room for expansion. The existing garage looks good, progress. I hope the old house was burglarized and not 'robbed.' One is an inconvenience, the other is a life-threat.

I like my FEIT LED twin 'bulb' shop lamps from COSTCO. I have them about 4 ft apart, and they provide lots of light.

Our daughter's family is a bit north of you, in the general area of Port Barrington/Wauconda, it looks like a great place to raise a family. Lots of woods and streams for a kid to prowl-around in, the Broken Oar restaurant on the Fox River seems to attract a good crowd on weekends, it appears to be a place for the older H-D riders to convene. I can hear them coming & going in the distance.

Looks like you're well-situated, what are you planning to do for the out-building, and for what uses?

where is that much room in Elgin?

I am not in Elgin anymore, but there are places similar on the far west edge.

Nice new place. look forward to the updates.

Thanks! I should have a good update for this thread this weekend :D

Thank you! Yes, it was a burglary. To be honest most people don't know the difference so its easier to say robbed most of the time. I should have known guys here would know though!

We have been checking out a lot of the local places. We will have to add that to the list. It is really nice to ride around here that's for sure!

I am totally up in the air on the out building right now. I have some grandiose plans in mind, but I am positive they will get scaled back a lot. Main use is storage and work on cars/fabrication. I can get everything in my garage now, but I have to shuffle a bunch to work on the car.

LOL

Sorry I kind of left you guys hanging here! Nothing new to report, just been working on stuff in the garage. Got the plow setup on the ATV, and got to use it to move the car last weekend. It does WAY better than the mower!! I think I am going to build a push bar set up for it to make it a little easier overall.

This weekend we are going to be starting on some of the electrical work around the house. That includes putting in a 100 amp sub panel out in the garage with a 220v outlet so I can weld again. I will post up some pics of all of that as soon as I can.

Thanks,
Sean

Not exactly a thrilling update, but we did get the sub panel done over the weekend.

Started with a hole
i-pb3L2Lv-X3.jpg

Set in place
i-pdj7VSg-X3.jpg

And all done!
i-CHh4nNq-X3.jpg

We stubbed out 2 3/4" pipes down to my basement for future work, and also a 3/4" up the the attic for possible future work. My main panel only has 3 open spots now, and I will need at least 2 for when I build a shop (if I don't add a new service). I need to get the mud rings and some drywall so I can patch it all back up.

We also did some other electrical work inside the house, but that's even more boring. Not sure whats next out in the garage other than working on the car. Whatever it is, Ill throw some pics up on here for ya!

Update time! I have wanted to get the garage door to be a high lift and put an opener on it so that I can actually use that bay with a car up on the lift. It took a while, but that finally got done this past weekend. I thought about doing it myself, but I messed with the garage door at my last house and decided against it. After seeing how involved it actually was I am glad I didn't try :)

You can see here that both doors were the same height.

Gauging where the rail will sit
i-b79Dp2d-X3.jpg

Opener in place, it is TIGHT to the ceiling. They did a great job of getting me every inch of clearance they could.
i-sDGqFtH-X3.jpg

Showing the old vs the new. Look at how little support strut is coming down to catch the rail now :)
i-dn84p3g-X4.jpg

And now for the most important part, two cars parked in the same bay :)
i-qHq6GGc-X4.jpg

It can go a good bit higher than it is there, but that is set down on a lock. I can probably get it on the next one up if I do it with the door closed, but no real need to. It would probably make the next lock with the hood off the roof too. Looking at this pic, I really need a shed...

I am planning on also having the same done to the other door in the spring. We may end up putting in new doors, so we need to decide if we are or not since it would be easier for the guys to do both at the same time. Thats all for now, next up is probably running some electric around.

Nice changes to get it the way you want it.

Digging the swap in the Lexus.
I've been wanting to build something for Drag week for YEARS. With so many irons in the fire, I just don't have the time now.

Interested to follow your build. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! It has a long way to go, but its workable for now :) Still cant wait to build a dedicated shop.

I don't really have the time for the car either. I barely had enough before we moved. Now that we are in a new house I have tons of projects I want/need to work on. To compensate for the lack of time and funds I just keep scaling back things. I want it running and driving in spring, but it wont have a cage or a big fuel system to support big power. If I had my way I would be chopping it up and taking out a bunch of weight, full cage, rewire it bumper to bumper and so on.

I don't have a build thread for the car on here, but I do on a few other sites. There is one on Yellowbullet, LS1 tech, Club Lexus, The Chicago Garage, and I think another site. Pick one, and I'll send ya the link :)

Did a little work out in the garage yesterday. I had to do a little investigating and repair work on my heater. When they installed the new opener I had them just take down the stat that was there since I was going to replace it. Well when I went to do that I was an idiot and shorted the wiring. It was a pain in the *** to get access to the heater, but eventually I found the blow fuse on the control board. Got that changed out, and installed an Ecobee 4. Before anyone jumps on me for having a $200+ thermostat in my garage, let me explain. When we were buying the house a buddy of mine bought an Ecobee 4 for his house, and somehow ended up with 2. Long story short, they didn't want it back so he just had 2 and he gave one of them to me. Well there was already an Ecobee 4 in the house (which I actually moved to the garage). So now I have two Ecobee 4's like some kind of rich ******* :p

i-7mFjfwP-X3.jpg

I clearly need to patch up the wall and install everything nicer. I am waiting until we replace the other opener before I get too crazy over there.

Next I tried to see if I could raise the car another lock. Turns out I can, just barely!
i-D7JbFnp-X4.jpg

Besides that I just cleaned up, and re arranged everything so I could get in and out of the cars easier. While I was doing that I came walking up the driveway and grabbed this pic.
i-kfdbXQd-X4.jpg

It still has a long way to go but it keeps getting a little better. It will be nice when I get the motor and trans back in the car so I can stop moving them around along with the cherry picker.

That's all for now!
