God does answer prayers! Haha. Nice to see some progress and hear you are still chuggin' along. The drywall/trim looks great. Personally, I have never seen that before.

All good LLWillysfan. I've known people who got to this point and lived in the house for three years before picking up a tool again.
I'm just glad you didn't fall or get shoved in the river!

Love it. Surprised at the stone lippage, since a setter can adjust the setting mortar depth if the stones are not uniform.. but losing the lead craftsman explains alot.

Glad you are persevering.

Thanks for the update. I understand you've been busy, but to a pedestrian like me, every detail is absolutely amazing and worthy of note. Keep up the good work and thanks for keeping us in the loop. Add details when you can.

I'm really glad to see that you're posting again Doug, like others have mentioned here, we were beginning to get very concerned about your absence.

I was thinking "damn, now he's never going to finish this house and move on to the Willys build!" :lol_hitti

Just kidding, it's good to see that you've continued with your usual high standard of finish and attention to detail with the sheetrock.

Great to hear things are moving along Doug, I surprised myself at how glad I was to see an update from you!

The last 10% always takes 90% of the time (or something like that)

I saw your post on the D.TRECE thread, perfectionism is a blessing and a curse.

My brother had an imperfect slate floor. People were tripping and stubbing their toes on it all the time. I'm not sure if he ever fixed it before he sold the place. I hadn't thought of grinding it down though.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the update, it is coming along very nicely, despite the slower recent progress. Keep us updated as you hit the home stretch!

Long time reader, posting this to say thanks for posting this detailed build blog. Very nice to see how this magnificent building is constructed.

This is the nicest modern building I have seen in a long time. True architecture.

This thread reminds me a bit of the movie "Shawshank Redemption". About 1/3 of the way into the movie you realize it is a long movie and that you hope that it is a lot longer so that EVERYTHING is explained.

About 1/3 of the way into the thread I felt the same way!

The fact that Shawshank also took place in Maine and dealt with someone working with concrete over a number of years is a nice bonus of course!

I did jump ahead to post this I am still back on page 65!

LL, I am only on page 39 so far but have a question on the conveyer truck. Where is the excess belting stored? Between this build and Don Longs site, I am so far behind on my regular work, that when my wife finds out she'll take away my internet for a year. LOL. Great amount of info here. As of page 39 my hats off to you and your wife for a job well done.

I'm back with some new stuff to share with you. We've been pretty busy but I haven't had anything very interesting to show you;

Let's start with the door detail I dreamt up. The goal was to end up with a very flat wall. With the flush baseboard detail, everything is in one plane.

Once we get everything painted the same, the doors will be hard to discern from the walls. One of the details I used to accomplish this was the hidden hinges

The door header is above the sheetrock ceiling. The door literally goes from floor to ceiling

The hinges required pockets, which had to be cut into the door blocking

We've also been working on electrical finish. With the exception of a Lutron scene controller in the main space, the electrical install is pretty standard. No high tech stuff at all

We are using recessed lighting pretty exclusively. We are using these 4" led lights for general lighting

We are using these little 2" leds fro task and accent lighting.

Kinda hard to see but there is a row of the small leds down both sides of the second floor

Down in the basement, all the drain, waste and vent is done.

They obviously still need to tie in all the domestic water

Since this is a garage based website, I'll show you the rough in for a utility sink in the Shop

Not very glamorous I know, but I hooked up the toilet in the garage for the workers to use - No more Porta Potty

OK, how about something a little more interesting; The bathroom vanity tops are in

We saw the design on the internet and took a picture to our counter top fabricator. He did a beautiful job. The material is Corian in Designer White, which is a very pure white.

The double vanity in the Master Bath

We are using these little faucets. Its made by Kohler and is called a Toobi

You might recall that I mentioned that I'm living in the Guest Suite up over the garage. This is the kitchenette in that space.

The unfinished items are refrigerator drawers. I have wood panels that will make them blend in with the cabinets but I need to put the pulls on before I install them - and I haven't bought the pulls yet

Speaking of kitchens.......Yup the pods are in;

For those of you who missed it, we call these things pods. They are basically free standing room dividers that house back to back cabinets. The one is a baking area with a wall over and a nice big counter

On the opposite side is the frig and freezer flanked by a couple pantry cabinets

The appliances are all Miele and are fully integrated, which basically means they are covered by cabinet panels

The other pod has pantry cabinets on the back side and have space for a wine frig that I can't afford right now

The front of this pod has a beverage area i.e. bar.

Under the built in coffeemaker there are a set of refrigerator drawers ( we got a great deal on the two sets at the local ding and dent store). The other two spaces are for an 18" dishwasher and an ice maker.

The coffee maker is kind of cool. It grinds the beans and uses them to make all the coffee styles. It even steams milk

In the middle of the main space is the island

The cabinet company made the pods and the island surround. The finish is rift cut oak with all the grain running horizontally. The inside corners were too small for a useful cabinet on the inside so I had them arrange a couple that pull out from the front

The cabinets on the inside will house the induction cooktop, a small sink and an under-counter speed oven and warming drawer. The finish is a glossy white plastic laminate

This thing just goes on and on...... And on the back wall we have a home office area

Also on the back wall are more cabinets and counter. Among other things, this will be a clean up area with a full size dishwasher and a big sink with a spray faucet

We ordered matching doors for the closets.

As if there aren't enough, we have more cabinets bolted to one of the AC walls to create a buffet. It will get a matching countertop

Please pardon the mess but he's a wide shot to help you put it all in perspective

My next project is to build the structure for the bar counters around the front of the island so I can get them back out to template

I also need to finish the shower walls so I can order the enclosures. Once it warms up a bit I'll install the gas fireplace, place the concrete patios and finish the underside of the exterior overhangs.

Hopefully I'm on track to be substantially complete by the end of April.

Btw I've ordered railing for the stair cases. The rails have been debated on here and I've gotten a lot of great suggestions. I hope you aren't disappointed with my choice. More on this later.

I may have missed this, but can we assume you have the radiant heat up and running?

Beautifully done, as usual. We have the same door hinges in a prominent front hall closet - without trim or hinges, it all but goes away visually.

this update was well worth the wait! Your house deserves at least an article in a designer magazine. Amazing!

VERY impressive detail work, you obviously have put a GREAT deal of thought into every aspect of this build. A question on how the drains work on those vanity sinks. Love the look overall. Thank you so much for taking us along for the ride. Truly and epic build and epic thread.

Oh yeah! Thanks for the updates.

This is THE greatest build I´ve ever seen. Great!

The "final mile" and details take so much time and so much effort, ofcourse everybody understands.

Keep up the greatest work!

Amazing!

I too love the design of the vanity sinks.

What an amazing journey. If you ever decide to sell tour tickets I will be first in line.

Mud season is around the corner!

Best Regards,

.

LL,

A while back I was concerned about you but not anymore. You seem to have your foot planted on the floor and the nitrous flowing and are about to cross the line. Any competition is in the rear view mirror...not that I've seen any thing close to the thought you've put into this place. All the Best. JP

I don't think storage will be a problem, thats a lot of cabinets! Fantatic to see the design fill in.
