Well, I'm a long time lurker on the site and decided I should start up a thread in order to accomplish a couple things.

First, it allows me to introduce myself and my modest garage. My name is Charles and my wife and I bought our home three years ago. We have moved through the house room by room and updated and renovated the entire home. There isn't a square inch left that we haven't painted, patched or rebuilt. The garage has served me well as a base for upgrades to the rest of the house and property, but it is finally its turn. She is small, but I think she has potential.

Second, I hope to gather ideas from forum users as I move toward a space I can be proud of.

Lastly, a journal is going to help me stay on track and making progress.

Well, on to the pictures and story.

Here she is. I told you it was a small garage didn't I. Actually it wasn't always a garage. When we moved here it was a carport. I decided I needed a place to get out of the elements and away from it all so now it is a garage. I don't have any pics of it as a carport, but we can start here.

I have been moving stuff around and building the garage, so it's a bit messy.

I decided the next thing the garage needed in its journey to being a real garage was doors. My wife and I talked about doors and decided I would build them. Heck, I've built most things in this house now. I am building carriage doors that will mimic the style of the house.

One door mocked up.

Second door built.

Doors off and getting painted.

Well, it is getting dark so I am calling it quits for today. I won't have to quit with the light much longer.

Tomorrow, I hope to finish the carriage doors and frame in the back door.

Great start, wazzudude. Looking forward to more pictures. I couldn't tell if there's a door going directly into the house.

Nice start! If I ever have to replace my garage door it's going to be with carriage doors.

No, there is no door going into the house. I am going to frame in the rear of the garage so you can use that door.

Where are you located?

It's 22 degrees in Denver today and it would be nice to work today in a warmer climate.

I'm in Washington. It's around 32 this morning. The thing I am most looking forward to is having a place I can warm up. I'm tired of freezing while I work on stuff.

Re: it's time...

So, I got off to a late start today. Headed out to the family farm and that cost me the morning. Oh, well. When I got back home I got to work hanging the doors I built yesterday.

I think they will turn out just fine.

Doors hung.

My helper snuck in for this one. He seems to be within two feet of me at all times. His name is Holden. I am an English teacher and The Catcher in the Rye happens to be my favorite book.

After I got them hung, I started on the trim work. Have to make them pretty.

I think the design adds interest and it helps match the house. It also helps remove some of the "I just made this door" DIY look.

And there he is again.

The next part will be framing in and finishing a little alcove in the back of the garage. I also took out a gate that was back there and am putting in a door. When I got around to doing it I found that this wall of the house is 2 inches out of level. Seems to be par for the course on this place. Nothing is ever level.

I got the framing for the door built and shimmed the jamb to make up for the wall being out of level. Then I put in the door. It's just roughed in for now. It will look better when finished. Tomorrow, I will try to finish up the door and the rest of the alcove.

At this point I was tired and headed in.

Re: it's time...

Well today included a bunch of errands and finishing framing in the back door. I got all the supplies for rewiring the garage and picked up more lumber to trim out the back door. Here is how I left it.

The hinge at the bottom right is a dog door so Holden can visit me when I'm out there. It will look nice when I get it cleaned up and trimmed out.

Well, a pretty productive weekend.

Re: it's time...

So, I got a bit done this week. Maybe not as much as I would have liked, but I do what I can.

I got the back door mostly finished. I still have some trim work to do and I need to think up a better way to get the dog door to stay open rather than a stick. Holden needs to move about freely.

Inside, I have basically just made a mess. I took out my fold down bench and sheeted the outside wall and added some electrical to that wall. In the back corner I built a cabinet and I built a removable dummy wall to help hide the storage up above.

I need to wire in some switches and another outlet on the other wall and sheet the walls on wither side of the carriage doors and clean up then I think I can start with paint. Walls are going to be light grey. Should be some crimson accents as well. I believe the garage is finding its name. The Den. As in cougar den.

Re: it's time...

starve that dog of yours a little....he looks like a fat ******* and likes to sit down a lot. He would really like to be leaner and fitter. ( might live a bit longer too)

Re: it's time...

It's his winter coat. When standing you can see his ribs just like out vet says we should on a German Shepherd. We take him to the vet regularly to have his weight and hips checked because I would like to keep him around. My wife and I were just joking about how he always looks fat when he sits down. Oh, and I don't think he sits down unless I tell him too, but thanks for your concern.

Well, I decided on a name. I went with The Den for a few reasons. 1) this is a small garage, it's den like. 2) I attended (along with just about every member of my extended family) Washington State University so a Cougar den seemed to work. 3) I write and will be building a desk in this here garage to escape the hoopla of the house on occasion to jot some things down.

Now, on to a few pictures.

I have had a few minutes to work on the garage in the past week. I sheeted the garage in osb and painted one wall. I am going through the garage wall by wall.

I left part of the wall uncovered to shelve some paint cans and stuff.

I also painted and stained my folding mitersaw table. It only has one coat of paint on it so far, but it will get there.
