The Electric Blue Garage is Back! Update page 4.

Work began in earnest on our 28' x 40' garage on Labor Day. Here is the space before. The crab apple tree that's behind the MINI on the left (hers) has to go.

Tree gone and walls are strung out.

A little rough leveling.

Next step is to bring in the water and sewerage and electricity, floor drain and pour the concrete! This garage will be bigger than our house. Plans include a portable 4-post Titan lift, a half bath, fridge, bar and big-screen TV.

Walls will be 11' with scissor trusses. Probably go with fluorescents in the ceiling. This is my first (and probably last) garage build so I want to do everything right. I've learned a lot from you guys and now is the time to pile on your ideas if you can help me out.

Here is an artist's rendition of the finished product.

More to come as work progresses!

The trusses arrived today.

They somehow dropped these in the front yard this morning without waking us up!

No work has been done since last Thursday. Waiting for clearance to hook into the water system. That will happen tomorrow and things will move quickly from there on out.

Well there were some questions by the Township and a Stop Work Order was issued Tuesday. Turns out the back wall has to be 8 feet from the property line, not 5 like they approved before. The poor builder has to eat it all.

They will get going again tomorrow.

so is everything moving forward or are you going to shorten the garage? I love it when the guys in the office say one thing and the field inspectors say another.
I too like the artist rendering.. Looks like when I play in photoshop!!!

They're going to move the whole thing forward. It's almost like starting over.

I guess not. I'm sure the contractor did all he could do as he has to eat the cost.

Sorry to hear this came up for you. You will have a bit of a delay but at least it's all going to work out for you. I have been going through a similar series of issues and red tape with my project. Hang in there, it will all work out. Look forward to your updates.

Trenching out for water and sewer. The backhoe barely fit in the shallow backyard.

Lots more got done today, but one problem. After they left I discovered they made the walls 10' high, not 11" as specified. I intend to have a portable 4 post lift soon. With scissor trusses can I be happy with 10" and several thousand dollars they'd better give me back? If 10' isn't enough for a lift the walls might as well be 8'. I'm not happy.

If you payed for 11' , I'd make em raise it up. My ceiling is 11' without scissor trusses, and it is adequate for the Challengers,Cudas and Roadrunner. If it was a foot higher, I wouldn't worry when I have something way up on my 4 post lift. Now is the time to fix it, so you're not unhappy with it forever. Good luck.

Nice progress. That place is huge!! I would also have them fix the height issue now. Or, have the mistake reflected in the bill.

I would get the builder out asap with the drawings in hand and confirm what is going on re the height problem. Was the 11 a verble item or does it show on the prints as a clear 11' at the point your measuring. To some eve height is a nominal thing, and it can be from grade and not finished floor.

no neat sig line

Turns out they simply couldn't make the walls any higher and meet code. Not sure why he didn't tell me, but we'll deal with it. Any way, the shingles arrived and more sheathing has been done. It rained on the exposed sheathing all day today. Is that a problem?

Got A LOT done in the last 2 days. These pictures are all from today.

Had builders doing the walls, roofers laying down shingles, and concrete crew prepping the driveway.

Euphemism for, "We fucked up again, and hope you don't check the zoning rules, and make me build this whole shop again."

Nice shop anyway, a regular Mini Castle.

We're in Michigan and they sank them well below the frost line; 5 feet or so.

It's looking good. I'd guess the rain is holding off your concrete too. Are they framing the inside in between the posts for 16"o.c. to insulate and finish ?

Where is all the water going that comes off the roof? The area in front of the garage doors appears to tilt to the front corner with no escape. Road appears higher... out your front door and to the left the road appears lower? Any way to drain and gravity feed to that area? Or do you own a boat? now is the time...

NUTTSGT: Yes, they finished studding today and it will be insulated and walled with 1/2" sanded plywood.

70CHEVY: We are in Okemos

egads74: There will be gutters directing the water away.

They started work on the driveway before 8 this morning and are just now finishing at 7:45.. It's looking GREAT.

5057848601_d872b43789_z.jpg

We wanted the driveway to be nice but it's going to be so huge. My wife Molly wanted curves and had an idea for a special touch on the borders.

5058460510_39285b33be_z.jpg

Two colors of powder will be used to create a decorative "brick" border to help accentuate the curves.

5058460860_3b6e05c398.jpg

First the guy scribes out the 12" border.

5058461450_697717145e_z.jpg

Then the powders are carefully applied.

5058462262_a72aac8564_z.jpg

5058462650_5b1a382cbe_z.jpg

Then the "bricks" are scored and a texture is pressed on.

5057852813_8cfaa04925_z.jpg

The color will be different when they wash off the powders and seal the border. I can't wait to see the finished product.
