This thread makes me want to buy a printer.
Then I’d need a new computer, evidently a dryer too, etc.

Not sure everyone needs a dryer. I thought I did and bought a few, you know, so I could dry all spools before putting them in the AMS but realized after a few weeks of printing, that it’s apparently dry enough here in Denver I can take a spool out of the packaging and run it as is with no drying…like every time. ~20-ish percent humidity in the house.

It’s so dry in Denver your snow evaporates!

The P1S landed yesterday! There were a couple of dings on the box, so I was worried about broken glass. Fortunately, it is well packaged, and everything was in good order. After I finished work, I got it set up a printed a benchy. Amazing speed and quality! And it is so easy to set up prints and monitor. WHY did I wait so long to get one?! It feels like going from driving that old car that runs, gets you from A to B, leaks a lot, and has to be fiddled with regularly, to driving a brand new Lexus!

Now I have it chugging away on an AMS riser/tool holder/organizer thingy...

Edit: DON'T FORGET TO TURN OFF THE AUX FAN!! I have read countless posts of prints failing because of that dumb fan. Sure enough, 1.5 hours in, I notice a spot looking bad on the camera. Yep, the aux fan caused the back side of the print to lift and shrink...
Starting again...

The only time I use mine (in NM, where it's even drier than Denver) is when I'm doing nylon-based filament.

I should find a different spot than my laundry room for the 3D printer, though because on laundry day, the relative humidity goes way up in that room.

Most of my prints are usually pretty boring: brackets, spacers, holders, organizers, etc. But these seemed odd enough to warrant taking a picture of.

I feel like I’ve seen the “what’s it for” game on here before. Anyone feel like guessing why I printed a pair of stubby robot-looking feet?

Fusion 360, Elegoo Neptune 4 plus, Polymaker PLA pro.

Seems like you'd put them inside a shoe or boot to hold it upright or in its form to prevent creases or whatever. Not sure about the round ankle part but I guess it could hold a ******** something like a women's heel or a sandal? Upper loops are easy to get a finger in to pull out of the boot/shoe

In Denver, I have dried filament exactly once so far, and it was multi-year old ABS. This is after using many kinds of printers. Ran the "drying" cycle on the Bambu (stick it inside, cover with box), and it brought it back to life enough that it was useable. Have some nylon I need to try, going to attempt the same thing.

BTW, the AMS for the X1, at least, has dessicant in it to help keep filament dry.

You're making a short stubby robot?

This would be a much more fun answer, but unfortunately no.

Basically nailed it, but for exactly the opposite purpose. It’s a form for inside a boot, but to change it’s shape rather than preserve it.

The exaggerated ankle is where the boot was chaffing my actual ankle. So now I’ve got them laced up tight over the form and I occasionally run warm water over the area. Seems to be working based on a short test.

Ah ha, now the exaggerated ankle part makes sense.

I spent 10 weeks at Netflix Studios this past spring, dry is an understatement! By the time my nose stopped bleeding, the job was over and I flew back home to humidity central (North Carolina). I thought I was going to die for the first few weeks out there!

Right before I went off for Cancer stuff, the K1 max came out. I originally ordered it for my father, but he bought one the same day. So I decided to keep it and my initial use will be things like Mechanics time savers (socket holders, wrench racks, small parts bins, etc).

What all of this type of stuff have you all made and what type of filament would you recommend? (I was thinking abs)

Most of the time I use PLA, but for something like a mechanics socket holder that might see a lot of use in the garage environment, PETG is probably a better choice although slightly more difficult to work with, No real need for ABS as far as I know for that sort of application, and you don't really have to worry about fumes much with PLA or PETG.

I'm 2yrs into my Ender 3 Max ownership and I've never dried a single inch of filament. You can do a lot with PLA and filaments that don't require drying. I also spent the first year using my gen1 core-i5 build from 2010 without any real heartburn (mobo gave up last spring)

I can't say I've ever dried my PETG, although I only open a spool at a time.

Even then, this black spool I just killed last week was open for several months. I'm told it spatters on the nozzle more when wet, but I haven't had much of an issue with it.

I've found that PLA on the roll eventually gets brittle with moisture, even when stored in a Tupperware-ish dry box. It made me buy a little Sunlu dryer, which works excellently.

I've noticed some brittleness as well after 3-4 months as well, but it only seemed to effect the ~6inches closest to the extruder (filament snapped right at the entrance). After cutting the end off the rest of the spool seemed to print finr. Good to know it might be moisture related.

After pulling and it kept cracking on multiple rolls for maybe 10 feet each, that's when I decided on the dryer. Here in the hinterlands we have bouts of stupid humidity pretty much year round. My lungs have been so thankful for these few weeks of sub-freezing weather.

works right thru the case.

When the case is closed? No issues with heat? I'd be interested in this setup for my Dad's RV. I have my Gen 3 converted to run on 12v with a mount for my trucks, but it's big and now only runs on 12v....

Our race team has a Gen 1 in a Pelican case that we've been dragging all over Mexico for the last few years. The case has bung on it for the post so when we pull the Starlink out, the case serves as it's base.

this is going to be deployed to ... a sandy place. so i'm suggesting camo netting above it to keep direct sun off of it. we shall see what happens.

What brand PETG are you using, they look nice!
IIID Max PLA+. Print color looks a little more satin in finish than what I expected but I like it. Almost no print failures so far too.

I have so many gridfinity items bookmarked for printing...I am going to need more filament!
It’s nuts. Once you get into Gridfinity, you kinda can’t stop. That said, most of the organizers I’ve printed don’t fit tools/stuff the way I’d like so I think utopia is being able to make your own….which is my next adventure.
Gridfinity?
Yes!
