Search for a local Maker Space first... otherwise, one of us may be able to help you out. I'll see how long they take to print... I have some black regular PLA that came with my printer when I bought it. It might hold up for a while, but PETG or ePC would last longer.

I’m getting no joy. Looks like the closest 3D printing place is a couple hours away. I even emailed a guy who was trying to sell his 3D printer locally and asked if he would hook me up before he sells it...lol.

PM me your address. I can print you off a couple of sets....sorry no color choice just what I have available. I don't have the nice machines like these guys but it works fine for me. They look rather simple so should be no problem for my machine.

What model was the local 3D printer for sale and how much was he asking for it? Might worth buying it to get into 3D printing.

CPR... Clear! Reviving this thread. :p

I've been slammed since my last post. I did post in my GL1100 thread, but haven't really done anything with my 3D printer for the past 3 weeks. I'm kind of in a holding pattern until the 300x300x600 Rail Core II BOM is posted.

I did make progress in my garage so I will probably move my Prusa out there for the summer so I can run it 'round the clock to print the frame parts for the RailCore. Then I'll get the cabinet finished for it so I can move everything back into the basement this fall.

I did come across this really cool 3D printing and design article. Right up my alley!

Here's my current progress on the railcore 300zl:

41242536274_763772396f_b.jpg

I'd say it's about 40% complete. I still have to do the belts, mount the bed, electronics, etc. Making slow progress here and there. I have all the parts I need, it's just a matter of finding the time to complete the rest.

Here's a custom switch pod I modeled and printed for my FJ Cruiser. I angled the face of the pod so the switches face towards the driver.

I was on vaca last week and wanted to bring something to build. Found a cool 3D printed kite that someone had designed. I printed all the parts and brought them with me. Put it all together and got some fabric from a local kite shop. Came out good, but didn't get a chance to fly it. The kit hinges to fold into the shape and folds flat. Pretty cool. Original link to where I found it: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:952737

Very interesting take on Alexander Graham Bell's Tertrahedral kite.

One reason I'm building my 3D printer is because some of the kite parts are not commercially available anymore and nothing too fancy that cannot be printed in a few minutes. One of many other reasons too.

Just found this thread. I have printed new knobs for the oven and stove. Wheels for a pocket door. Bicycle water bottle holder. Replacement battery cell plug for my car. I have a friend at work that prints all kinds of trinkets and has a CR-10 and Finder

Half the items are from thingyverse, the other half I designed.

My printer is a Flash Forge Finder. Limits are about 5 x 5 x 5.

I just got my first printer up and running. Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus. Was not expecting to have to track down the firmware base Anycubic used and configure and build my own updated copy just to get the thing functional. Pretty terrible initial product but seems to be chugging along fine now. Trying to figure out a workflow to get from Fusion 360 to Cura so I can start to print out some of my own designs rather than test pieces off Thingiverse.

I've found that delta printers are pretty mesmerizing to watch. I keep trying to start a print and do other stuff but instead I just sit and watch it whip around:

I recently purchase an Ullman 8 Pc Pic Set for about $16 on Amazon. I really didn't like them rolling and flopping around in my cart, so decided to model and print a little holder. I modified the g code using Cura's pause at height extension to pop in some magnets. These keep the pics from moving around as I open/close the drawer. Fits perfectly! I didn't have any PLA in orange, so this is printed in ABS. Also, this was my first time noticing, but I really do not like Cura's triangular infill. It causes A LOT of vibration on large parts like this as the nozzle rubs over the infill as the head moves. If you're wondering why my print board looks hazy, I use a slurry of ABS and acetone as a primer on the glass to keep the initial layer from de-laminating. Works like a charm. When the print bed cools, pops right off too.

Awesome job!

I haven't printed anything in weeks. Just haven't had time do to work and I need to get the cabinet finished. I'm trying to decide if I want to just put the cabinet on leveling casters or make a frame from TSLOTS aluminum extrusion for it.

And the big RailCore II plans still haven't been released yet, so I'm still just treading water while I wait for that.

I do need to do some test printing with my PETG to see how the Prusa does with it without the silicone boot.

Alrighty guys, what do you use on your print beds when printing PETG for a good bond?

I cleaned off all the glue stick and wiped down my bed really good with IPA, but my first layer still didn't bond.

I definitely need to tweak the retract setting on the printer too, but it won't help until I get a good first layer bond.

Also, Murphy did you print the kite frame in PLA+? What material did you use for the kite? I downloaded the files but haven't started printing them yet.

I've printed with Ultimaker's CPE+, which is similar to PET & PETG. I used it for a functional prototype for part of an oil delivery system. I believe I just used a glue stick smeared with a damp cloth. I intentionally started the print after working hours when the AC wasn't running.

What temp. is your print bed set to? Are you using a brim or raft? What do your first layer print settings look like? CPE's are very prone to warping, so make sure you printer isn't under your ac vent or anything.

I was just going to print the V29 whistle so no brim or raft.

Extruder was 240 which is in the middle of the range for the eSUN PETG. Bed was 90degC.

I was using the Prusa PETG settings. I'll try it again with the generic PETG settings and see what changes.

I didn't mess with it much since it was over lunch and it didn't bond to the bed.

I looked up the whistle and noticed there is a large fillet/radius along the face that sticks to the print bed. Whenever I model parts to be printed, I try to avoid that.

Those temps sound on the high side to me. You want to print CPE/PET/PETG as cool as you possibly can, as it will shrink less. Try 225-230 with the bed at 70.

Thanks. 230deg is the minimum recommended temp for the eSUN PETG, but I'll see how it does tomorrow morning after I switch it over to the generic PET settings and lower the temps.

Will do, but I won't have time to mess with it until maybe Sunday afternoon if I'm lucky or more likely Monday morning.

I need to get it dialed in so I can print the parts for my Rail Core II.

I also need to print some Prusa genuine parts for my GeeeTech i3 X & Z axis when I replace the extruder/hot end on it to get it running correctly before donating it to the school. Worst case I can probably print those parts in PLA+ for the time being, then print new parts in PETG later just so I can ensure the GeeeTech works before I donate it. The teacher who will be getting it for her Tech classroom is an old family friend of ours so I want to make sure it works.

I'm looking into getting my first printer, trying to make my way through the mass of info out there

Boilermaker- can I ask what specifically made you go for the ft-5? From what I can tell, it's the biggest print area sub $500 while still having a heated bed and be able to handle multiple materials.
I'm almost sold on it, the only thing I'm contemplating is something that can print dual materials. I would use this for aesthetics as well as using support material for more complicated prints. Have you found decent info on upgrading the ft-5 with dual extruders? It seems like any printers I find with that capability are twice the price and not a diy kit.
From what I understand you can also pause prints and switch out materials?

Any more info on what you were looking for and any close seconds would be helpful

Cheers

What you listed were pretty much the reasons the reasons I had selected the FT-5. Inexpensive to get into printing a large volume, easy to improve the quality with upgrades... maker713 has a great kit offered, but it's still on back order. lilscorpion and I are both still on the wait list. I was planning to upgrade the controller to the Duet Wifi with expansion to be able to run two multi-filament extruders.

Now it's been almost 6 months and I have decided to go a different path, but I'll explain why since it has nothing to do with my opinion of the FT-5.

I have a large electrical enclosure that I am going to sound deaden so that I can run prints in the basement 24/7 if I need to. Eventually the printers will live out in my garage once it's fully finished and heated. The FT-5 won't fit in my enclosure. It's about an inch too deep. Then I discovered the Rail Core II project thanks to plc268. It's basically everything I wanted in a foot print that will fit within my enclosure. I'm waiting on the BOM for the 300x300x600 unit to be finished and published. The RC II has all the upgrades right off the bat. And when Prusa releases their interchangeable print head, the RC group plans to integrate that into the RC II as well.

If I was starting out right now, with no experience in 3D printing and no experience with CNC controls, I would probably look at a handful of printers depending on budget. They would be the Monoprice Mini, the FT-5, or the Prusa i3 MK3. Prusa will be releasing a new printer with the interchangeable print heads too. Out of those 3, the FT-5 is probably the most difficult to get going with only because it's the largest and most complicated printer. Not impossible, it will just take more time and attention to build and get running. The Prusa is the most expensive, but definitely the easiest to dial in and they have a great support group.

My long term plans (3-5 years out) are to have two or three printers. The Rail Core II 300x300x600, a more standard 200mm3 size like a Prusa, and a very large print volume printer with a volcano hot end to print large objects with less resolution that will be covered with composite cloths for motorcycle, boat, and other vehicle parts. The standard small format printer will be tuned to print small parts at high resolution (0.05mm - 0.10mm layer height).

I'll probably buy a few other printers in that time too, but mostly used ones that need some work to get printing correctly so I can donate them to schools for the tax donations. I've found that once people know you have a 3D printer, then they tell you about guys that have one they aren't using and want to get rid of... mostly because they bought cheap ones and get frustrated. They're easy enough to fix if you know how to troubleshoot and have a printer to make new parts. My GeeeTech i3 is a prime example. I have leads on two more smaller printers, but the owners haven't decided if they want to sell them or how much they want for them yet.

It's printed in Onyx, a nylon blended with carbon fiber from Markforged for use in their composite printers. Be aware that a few of the parts on that kite model had incorrect connections, a male where it was supposed to be female for example. Not a big deal, as I glued it all together, just a heads up.

Thanks. That kind of ***** that there are errors in the connections. I may try it in ePC.

And regarding my PETG printing... well, I'm still not getting any bonding on the first layer to the print bed and PETG is supposed to be crazy sticky to PEI... I tried blue tape after a couple vids recommended it. It did help, but still no success. I need to try a few other setting tweaks, but I'm about to just order different PETG and shelve the eSun material for now.

Modeled and printed more tool box accessories today. :)

I like my USA made Craftsman 5 Pc mini torx set. I use the T8 and T9 to lubricate my ratchets, and the rest I've used to work on older Becker radios. (Porsche radios) Can't justify a giant bench top Wiha set just yet. I didn't want to take up valuable drawer space with this set, so came up with this!

Nearly finished with my build. Arduino Atmega2560+Ramps1.4 controller with aftermarket LCD and SD card reader and TMC2130 stepper drivers driving Nema17 steppers. 8mm Acme leadscrews, 10mm round linear rails. Modified Anycubic feeder and extruder. SN04-N NPN inductive proximity sensor for Z probe and 300W/24V silicone heatpad for the bed. Machined aluminium components in a welded steel frame. Basically budget components that has been assembled fairly solidly.
43356615694_f0ff330754_z.jpg

Signs of life. Had some strange issues with Marlin compile freezing early on in the process. Upgrading my Arduino IDE resolved it and got most things configured except for the last few items associated with the TMC2130 stepper drivers. before doing a calibration run.

Are there any good electronic-less frame kits out there?

I have an older printrbot simple (v1) that has been modified and changed over the years. At this point the print area is up to 225x125x200, but its reaching the point of losing rigidity and accuracy from a pile on of changes and making things do far more than they need to.

So I have the driver board, steppers, power supply, etc. If I could find a kit with the parts to use those with a new frame it would probably save me a few bucks. If not I may just pick up an FT5 and sell this one, but I doubt it would go for much anymore.

Probably around 200x200 would do most of what I need for now. Z would be nice to get 200 but less or more would work.

Check out the RailCore II

There is a BOM with sourcing links to the extrusions and even the side covers.

They have a 250mmX250mmX250mm; 250X250X280; 300X300X300; and 300X300X330 versions released. I'm waiting for the 300X300X600 to be released.

I like it. May see if I can make the panels and start ordering the other parts. I would only need to add 1 stepper for now, and if it worked well I could upgrade to their recommended electronics over time, since its half the cost. Looks like there is also some savings by shopping some of the parts.
