Yesterday and today's efforts in the picture below.

Got a late start and was putting up the house lights Monday after dark.

Today it took my girlfriend and I together to move ladders and wind light strings only to find afterward a couple strings were half good/half dead! You can see on the left tree with white lights a section that's just dead though the lights before and after that election are lit and they tested good before we started but hey they're cheap as can be.
I suppose the light gauge wires and terminations made in China can't be expected to last more than a couple uses. A quick Home Depot run tomorrow will get replacements but I'm not looking forward to getting out the ladders, again! Still, the neighborhood looks festive and truly nice. A tree outside the reach of this picture on each end show the problem worse.

Ah...I wish my house was a one story. Nicely done!

Are the lights incandescent? If they are get one of these.

I restored a bunch of light strings with one.

There's a LED version too.

I sort of finished.

Hi Leonard,
Thanks for the thoughts. As I type this on my phone I’m waiting for the little lady to come out of Marshall’s and we’re headed to Home Depot for some replacement lights. I just assumed my lights are LED’s though the bulbs look like the ones on the Amazon link.

How does that little gizmo “repair” a failed light? Or does it just identify which are bad and then you replace them?

If it's LED then the gizmo helps you identify the bad LED. It's actually rare that the LED is bad. What usually happens is the lead breaks. The LEDs are meant to solder to a circuit board. the leads themselves are somewhat brittle. If there is a fracture in the lead it just breaks after some time.
Here's video that explains how the LED one works.

If they are incandescent then the light keeper helps burn the shunts on the lights open. then you just have to replace the bulbs.

Interesting but I've got to ashamedly admit to being a member of the "disposable society" on the subject of Christmas lights. The kind we usually complain about here. I bought replacement strings of lights that were only $3.98 for the red ones but interestingly were $10 for the white ones. Both are mini LED's per the label. Both say they're for interior/exterior use. No idea why color would make one 2-1/2x the price of the other.

Cause red LEDs just need the simple LED die. White LEDs require a specific blue LED and a yellowish phosphor coating. Or three LED dies clumped together. Mo parts, mo money.

Interesting. I don’t understand what a “die” is? Or did you mean dye as in a colorant? Anyway, at least one of us understands why they were more expensive. Ha ha.

Thanks Kay! When it comes to electronics I'm dumb as a sack of hammers. Well, probably not even that smart.

I took basic electronics in college. Whatever knowledge I had flowed down my arm onto the test page and has forever disappeared from my old brain along with too much other useful stuff.....i.e. "Buy cheapo replacement Chinese Christmas lights"

Happy 69!
And Birthday!
Oh thanks or remembering!

Slept in late, went out to breakfast which we never do. Took myself to see "Napoleon" - A beautifully shot movie, beautiful scenery and depictions of battle - makes me wonder if Ridley Scott did a lot of it the old fashioned way using thousands of extras. Probably not because of cost and logistics.

But the story is kinda slow. Nothing too different from we've been told about the historical person: Ambitious as hell, absolutely convinced of his own invincibility. The relationship between he and Josephine was weird, but who knows how accurate it is? Never knew she died before he fought Waterloo - interesting. I assume it'll be nominated for an Oscar but doubt it will win it. (Shoulder shrug).

Thanks again for remembering me.

Happy Birthday Dan! Our next birthdays will have a 0. Your other digit will be a 7 and mine will be an 8. Holy **** we're old. Wish I could remember how that happened.
Thank you Bob, Leonard and PD - very thoughtful of all of you.

For many years everywhere I worked I was, "The Kid". Like my father before me I have a full head of hair still and it stayed dark until well into my 50's. Once it began to go gray I actually noticed - well at least I thought I noticed - my ideas/solutions suddenly seemed to have more credibility!

But I have no issue with my "number" except this past June was my 50th high school graduation anniversary - no reunion as the school has been closed for decades - and I find it seems almost impossible that ANYthing in my life was FIFTY years ago!

Happy Birthday Dan!

My 50 year HS reunion was about 6 weeks ago. I heard there were about 35 people that got together for dinner at some restaurant out San Bernardino way. Odd, since the school was in Downey.

Yeah, I have trouble with that 50 year thing too. Like @Bob Heine said - "How did this happen?"

It's weird to me. I don't have a problem with being 69 or any age it just seems like I was tuned out, distracted or something for maybe 15-20 years in there somewhere. I remember clearly attending my son's college graduation and thinking, "Wow, both my kids are college graduates and it'll still be a few months before I turn 50, cool!" Then suddenly I look up and it's like, "What? I'm WHAT number?!"

Anyway, back to GJ stuff:

I screwed up today. I started a new small project and forgot to take Before pics. I'm finishing, not RE-finishing an old drafting table that has been unused for probably 30 years. The unfinished wood had darkened a lot being in a shed outside. I got it all sanded (well, almost) and began finishing with a Behr Poly & Stain combo I already had in a cabinet before I remembered pics. It's part of the gift package for one of our 9 year old grand daughters who loves to draw. Oh well. I'll just have to post Afters.

You could post a video of you applying polyurethane, we could all watch it dry together.
Are you saying my posts are boring as hell? Lol. They probably are and yet you look at them. That's the REAL hmmmm.

Here is the drafting table in pieces this morning and assembled later today. I sprayed the hardware black just to make it appear fresher. It's an old piece. Sat in a shed for many years and had no finish on it so the wood had turned dark. Sanding really refreshed it. This will be part of one of our granddaughter's Christmas presents along with a new pneumatic height adjustable stool and painting supplies. She's already a good little artist.

While putting away all the **** from this little job ^^^^ I realized my sawhorses looked AWFUL. I already had the belt sander out and there was just a little bit of Behr Poly & stain left (which I'd used on the legs and all parts but table top til my girlfriend said she wanted me to sand it all off!!!) and I wanted to use it up so...... Ta Da!

I need to throw a new coat of black on the legs and lube the hinges. They're stored outdoors in my sideyard so yeah, they are abused.

Will your Chevy step side make the drafting table delivery?

Nothing but style with your gifts.
Nope. Stepson and grand daughter will be down from up north at Christmas.

Actually, my next door neighbor's girl's soccer team were in a Christmas parade in the local "village" this year. He contacted me afterward and asked if they can be in the back of my '55 next year?

EEK! I can't imagine a dozen girls getting in and out of my bed without leaving marks all over it! I'm going to have to think of a way to protect it that doesn't look too bad OR.....maybe he'll forget he asked by next Christmas? The girls won't be on the soccer team anymore? I'll move? ha ha.

He's a VERY nice guy and has helped me out so I won't feel right just saying no. Good daughters too it's just I'm hyper protective of my truck

Next small project underway: Installing a small metal yard shed on a paving stone "foundation" in a border area.

There were irrigation hoses in the border I cut and crimped them off. Dug down enough to place the 12x24 stones and ripped a 3rd stone using a diamond blade on my Milwaukee "skil" saw - don't know what else to call it!

After all that I found the width is 61" instead of 48" I thought it was, DAMN! In hindsight I should have bought the huge 24"x24"x1" pavers I saw at Lowes. I didn't because they looked like porcelain tile and I was afraid they'd crack in a shed that will have shovels, axes, etc dropped inside.

So.... do I add 1 ea. 12" stone perpendicular and let the structure overhang 1/2" per side? OR buy 2 more and rip another one? This approach will make the width 6 ft. which I guess would be ok. I'd center the structure on it

All from a lack of planning on my part. Pictures so far: (Apologies for the lousy one)tempImageBwtPJI.pngtempImageEIpUMV.pngtempImageNLH5m0.jpgtempImagegR4LgX.jpg

A "small potatoes" job: These big wood wedges were cut for me by our contractor when we had the patio cover built. But they eventually split so I glued them today. Not sure if they will hold!

I plan to cut them shorter so the leading edge is 1". Should take off a lot of length. I'll run a couple looong screws or large dowels through them to make them hold up. These are to get our RV out of the driveway without dragging/cracking its sewer pipe.tempImagecZQQqF.jpg

Yeah, something like that. I guess I'll have to drape them over the sides because I KNOW they're going to want to sit on the sides. They have a flat top. These girls are about 12 I think so not truly "little" girls but not teenagers. Maybe some masking tape to hold them in position and ONLY I can remove it afterward or someone will try just ripping it off and maybe taking off my clear coat!
