Thanks, Happy Father's Day to all you guys whether you're fathers or not you all HAVE fathers!

Crackerjack, Not using quarter round on the concrete stem walls, just the 4x4 sink stand legs. It'll "hover" slightly above the tile so it can move if necessary.The rest will be vinyl cove.

In a couple places the stem wall is less than 4" tall so I'll have to rip the cove on my table saw - I guess.

Did some work today hanging a 4 ft. diamond plate LED shop light over the sink stand and organizing my pegboard. I'm not all that happy with either so I won't post pictures yet.

I was going to install the vinyl cove along the rear wall but it's too tall and I'm wondering what to do? Hoping you guys that have experience will have advice.

Option #1: Install the cove then use a razor to trim it down to the top of the stem wall. But the stem is very rough so the cut will likely be wavy, i.e. look crappy.

Option #2: Pre-cut the cove but it would look more or less the same except it wouldn't be even with the top of the stem, it'd be about 1/4" below.

Option #3: Use 3/4' quarter round wood. Pre paint it black and install it with dots of construction adhesive - not continuous - then use paintable caulk to touch up - unless I can find black caulk. Having it hold relatively tight against the stem may be a challenge but I can trim it as necessary before gluing then use some weights pressed against it. What say you?

PS: The white baseboard is just sitting there. Haven't nailed it yet.

I just checked on line and it shows Lowe's carries it. Whether MY Lowes has it or not is yet to be seen.

Saw a pic of it. It's REALLY stretchy! lol. I'll definitely use it if I go with the quarter round as I'm now thinking I should. More of a hassle than the cove but will probably look better. Pic's to come. Thanks again. Be safe out there! - Dan

Interesting conundrum, I think the addition of the quarter round will be the most aesthetically pleasing option. You could paint it black or white, either would work imo.

Huh? Build the stem wall UP? In front of the drywall? Even if I could, once you rip pressure treated lumber it's no longer bug/mold resistant. Not to mention the top of the stem wall is very rough so I'd have to knock down the few large bumps with a concrete saw or chisel, paint the lumber, attach it with construction adhesive, then paint it black, then install the cove. That's a lot of work just to use standard height vinyl coving.

Yeah, in front of the drywall, like the other options you are planning to do. Base boards, vinyl coving material, or whatever is going to be in front of the drywall no matter what. I just think if you are going for a clean look, the combo of the vinyl and some sort of other material is going to look crappy (like the example photo). To each there own, I'd just leave the stem wall painted and be done.

I guess I wasn’t clear. There are effectively two “levels” that have to be accounted for:

The drywall comes down (almost) to the top of the stem wall so I’m using ordinary wood baseboard there to cover the small gap.

Then the stem wall is about 3+” high below that. The cove is to cover the exposed 1/2” between the tile and the stem wall. I can’t go without it (or SOMEthing) because it would show the raw tile edge.

Considering my options but our old house has finally sold (is in a short escrow) so I've got to get over there, conduct a garage sale and move whatever remains either to the new house (ugh!) or donate to Goodwill, etc - but they're open VERY limited hours for donations....and frankly, I don't WANT to give away some of the better stuff. Just no room for it at the new place.

Ha ha! That may happen once I get whatever I can get from the garage sale.

FYI - I THOUGHT I was being clever today and attempted to make a "stainless steel" backsplash for the sink. Bought perfectly flat, sanded 1/4 plywood and vinyl stainless which is supposed to look EXACTLY like SS....and it does. Tried to put the stuff on the board twice and F'd it up both times. Got pissed off and tossed that idea. You have to use spray adhesive to supplement the stickum on the vinyl and it's SO sticky once it touches the board you are locked in, good or bad. In my case, bad twice.

SS "tile" being considered. No FRP, I don't like the look.

EDIT: I b!tched about screwing up the SS vinyl in front of my sister in law - who is currently visiting. She said, "Oh, I have some stainless steel you can use!" Huh? She saved the SS front panels off an old fridge she had. No idea why but I'm not complaining. Her husband is coming down next week and will bring the panels with him. One will work as the true back splash. I may be able to use the rest elsewhere.

OK, so the FIRST new delay to garage progress is our new house drains backed up leaving like 4-5" of water in the new garage sink. It needed to be hydro flushed. Though it helped, our plumber is coming back tomorrow because he didn't have his rooter on this truck.

To make matters worse he's deadly allergic to bee stings - carries an Epi-pen (is that what they're called?) - and we have LOTS of bees. The cleanup is right where we have a lot of roses and they were buzzing with bees when he got here. I stood guard behind him with a fly swatter but the hydro pump engine noise drove them off - I stood guard anyway.

The SECOND huge delay to garage progress but sorta "complimentary" to the garage's appearance is I ordered an 8x12 wood shed from Costco back in April and it was finally delivered today. They were back ordered.

Delivery was via a tilting trailer and the guy let it slide down to where I asked, albeit not straight. I can live with it because we're starting a patio room addition project early in August and the current shed package location will be demo'd.....so 'm going to have to erect it asap. Not sure if this project belongs on this thread or its own thread?

To be determined but here are pics of the delivery just to keep things together for the moment.

Thanks so much, Don. Our old house sale APPEARS to be going through (fingers crossed - tired of going there to do yard work!) so I am forced to bring over all the stuff we hadn't moved yet - either to be stored or donated later. A lot of places aren't accepting donations right now. So the new floor is mostly covered in stuff.

Just commented on your western town. That is SUCH a cool idea. Huge congrats!

Brother in law is driving down from Northern Cal tomorrow so we want take time off from all the & installing things for a few days to relax and visit.

Toward that end I had to install the fountain from our old house in the new backyard.
It weighs a FRICKIN TON so I got my girlfriend and her two sisters to help lift into position. That wasn't the worst of it. Also needed to relocate the stepping stones which I found were placed on 3-4" of concrete, DOH! Done now but man that was a strain in the full sun even under an EZ-Up.

Also because the BiL will be visiting I made a (poor) attempt to clean up the garage a little. Almost nothing is in its final place because a lot will go in the new 8x12 Costco shed - to be erected soon. Maybe it'll be in this thread or maybe have its own. TBD.

The Christmas colored bins on top of the cabinet will go in the shed but likely be replaced by others that will be surrounded in plywood, visually extending the gray to the ceiling. That will only be for infrequently used garage stuff. No hinges on these panels, the entire front panel will be removable via pressure latches.

The Craftsman boxes on each side of the garage will get a 1-1/2"thick MDF bench top across the tops, finished w/clear to match the existing bench top. Yeah, NOT very GJ-worthy. But I don't bang on stuff much anymore or fabricate anything so clean is the order of the day for this garage. All comments are appreciated (well, at least tolerated, ha ha!)

Finally, despite all the stuff I've had going on I'm unable to pass on a good dumpster find. Found this little stool (all-there-but-for-1-leg-dowel) and couldn't pass it. The ugly green paint nearly fell off. I made a dowel and will strip the rest of it, glue, prime & paint to match my other little stool which is finished with a vintage oil company decal on top and was also a trash rescue. Yeah, I know...these little stools are cheap brand new. Sometimes I just enjoy bringing back something that would have been in a landfill.

If I'm honest, I'm a little worried about having a stroke or heart attack myself doing it in this heat.

I've got to pull out the instruction sheet and see how much is involved. I own a framing nailer though I don't THINK there is a lot of true "framing" involved to erect it. We'll see.

Posting about my 8x12 Costco shed in the, "What Did You Do In Your Yard Today" thread. Thought I'd drop a pic here just to keep the thread up to date. FYI, the wide concrete "curb" you see against the block walls was there when we moved in. The hole is a French drain full of 3/4" gravel at bottom. Only rain gutters feed into it - yeah, I don't know why it was necessary either!

Sale of our old house is THIS close to closing. So I am over there getting the last of my garage/shop stuff and trailering to the new house. Some may be stored in this shed - mostly garden related and a few things I will use occasionally. I'll make a 3/4" plywood hatch cover.

Comments welcome. Shed will be finished as much as possible to match the house. Flat trowel finish gray stucco, white trim. Possibly lightweight tile-appearing concrete roofing - IF the shed framing will handle it.

Hi Don!

Yeah, the old garage with the original owner added 6x18 space behind it and the 13x21 shop he added had more space but it was done haphazard, we had a serious rat problem in there. I never finished it like I should have.

The new garage was starting to get nice but currently is stuffed with the final items from the old house. Lots of which I need to list for sale. But the old house FINALLY sold, escrow closed today as a matter of fact and the shed will begin to go up on Monday - house guests currently.

Hi Jay, Yeah thanks. I'm one of the weird guys that LIKES yard work but having two front yards and back yards, especially in the heat we've been having was just too damn much work. So glad it's over.

I think the contractor I hired (mistake) to build a short, 12 ft block wall& slab to complete my "foundation" for the shed has kept promising to come back, "...this afternoon" "tomorrow" "Saturday at the latest" has flaked on me.

Nice guy, we talked about the Dodgers etc, but bottomline for all contractors is to:
- show up when you said you would
- do what you said you would- for the price you said you would.

Anything else and you're a lousy contractor. I'll give him til Monday then I'm filing a complaint. Yes I was the stupid one - I paid him in full before he made a couple important corrections. I hate it when I'm the idiot.

Yup, I did apparently. He is a nice guy to talk to but business is business and it's MY fault I didn't hold him to his stated intent before paying him in full.

Okay before I was so rudely interrupted, in post #105 I showed a derelict small stool someone was throwing away that I decided to save. Yeah, I KNOW I could have bought a new one cheaper and for no work. But I enjoy fixing certain things like this. Anyway, a quick Before and After to refresh memories if anyone cares.

In post #108 I showed the foundation block wall & slab I had built by a Craigslist guy. They are for an 8x12 Costco shed. His work was ok-ish but he dragged this out waay longer than it should have taken.

Anyway, I built the shed over the summer. LA set a new record of 121* one day. In Glendora my thermometer read 117* that day. Accurate or not it was damn hot. On those days no work got done. Only an hour or two on other days and no help. So here are photos of the completed shed inside and out. I have lots of in progress shots but I'll spare you those. The metal shelves are also a Craigslist find for $50! Cut the rear legs shorter so the shelves sit against and are bolted to the wall.

I did everything on the shed except the roofing - which I was going to do using Youtube videos to show me how - but there was a guy at the local roofing supply yard that offered to do it for $250 labor and it only took him half a day. I thought that was pretty cheap but the best part is I know it won't leak.

I ran an outdoor extension cord to a power strip mounted inside the shed to provide power for a 4 ft LED light. I use a small fan in there too while filling it because it gets hot in there. Painted the shed as close to the color of the house as I could find. Pics are of the interior with and without the light. Makes quite a difference.

Back to the garage.

It became a total disaster when the old house rather suddenly sold and we had to get all remaining stuff from it and the shed was not done. So it all got stuck in there willy nilly and we've only recently gotten through all the boxes and gotten rid of a ton of stuff - and we THOUGHT we'd gotten rid of a ton before. Pano photo shows how bad it was. Better now but nowhere near done.

Now, I am going through the remaining things which are all "garage things". I've started to divide stuff into:
- Power Tool cabinet - the 1st time they've ever all been together
- Car Wash & Detailing cabinet
- General Storage cabinet.
- Finally, stuff that will be sold off and a few things that may end up trashed - UGH.

I'm sure I will have to rethink it eventually but I have at least started. I will shortly be building a new general workbench which MAY lead to me selling off some Craftmsan cabinets. Those that stay will sit on 2x6 bases with plywood work surfaces. The clear plastic bins are courtesy of Costco - 4 for $9.99 - waay cheaper than any on Amazon.
