I've been busy the past few days between getting the mill inside, fixing several electrical quirks and making soft jaws for the new chuck, among other things. I milled out a batch of soft jaws late last week and today I finished them.

The first order of business was to make a fixture for locating the bolt holes and counterbores relative to the keyways on the back side of the soft jaws. Here you can see a soft jaw being counterbored:

Here's a bunch of finished soft jaws, ready to be machined to hold various hammer parts in the new chuck!

I bored hammer heads today.

Tomorrow I'll start turning and fitting handles.

I'm really interested in one of these. But I am waiting to see what you come up with for a lead/babbit mold.

The current group of hammers is assembled. I'll have photos tomorrow.

I have to make some faces, then I'll be shipping them out.

Here's the group photo!

The short-handled hammer on the left is customized to fit a certain toolbox.

One of these hammers is a spare and has not been sold yet. If you'd like it, PM me. First-come first-served!

Right around 50 so far, including the first ten without serial numbers. I use the prototype every day, but I treated myself to a production version as well. :bounce:

Got mine a few minutes ago, I'm completely blown away by this thing.

E: Now that I've had a little time to marvel over this beast I have some musings. A good combination for fine work IMHO is to have the nylon face opposite the brass or steel face, nice and light but weighted on the side you're using. Absolutely fantastic feedback and it's easy to keep the face flat against your target. I'm glad I got it, besides being a shining example of American craftsmanship, I have an engine, transmission, differential, and front suspension to rebuild for my Opel GT and this hammer will be getting plenty of work.

My hat is off you you A_Pmech

My hammer arrived today. John custom sized mine so that it would fit into my Snap-On KRA65 box. My hammer is 10.75" in length and fits my box perfectly.

It really is as nice as everyone else has written. The workmanship is first rate and it's such a treat to get a high quality American made product. I will enjoy using this for a long time.

I was amazed by the weight distribution, much better than my stanley hammers haha. Thanks again Johnny boy!

You're welcome!

Stanley hasn't figured out how to drill a hole almost 10" into the handle of their hammer to lighten it and improve weight distribution. :D

Hey John,

I happened on this conversation a little late. Was wondering how much for a hammer and how close are you to Peoria...maybe I could just pick it up?

LONG overdue for an update here! Until recently it's been COLD here and that's really slowed down work in my unheated shop. However, things have warmed up in the past few weeks and I've made some progress! I have a number of exciting things planned for this year, so this is just the beginning.

Among other recent changes, I finally bought an Aloris toolpost for the Pacemaker. Not a small expense, considering the size toolpost required for a machine of its size. (It weighs about 30 lbs.) However, the increase in accuracy and repeatability definitely worth it!

I still have a number of available hammers.

Here's an action shot of aligning the new toolpost:

Thanks AP Mech, keep the information coming! I am looking forward to getting one of these, especially since my financial situation is improving, although our quakes are trying to throw a spanner in the works!

I just acquired my first Hammer a little while ago. It really is amazing how versatile it is. It has earned a permanent place in my "go-to" rally box where I keep my most used tools.

Pictures really do not do this fine tool justice. Vise repair with the Hammer FTW!

Thanks John!

Update

I'm going to finish them up in the next few days and ship them out. The shop cleanup and cargo container has made it easier to work in there but sucked almost two weeks of my time!

New shop photos coming soon!

I sent payment for one on 3-19, but have not heard back.

Hi Scada,

I did receive your payment on 3/17. I replied to your email today. Thanks!

And, if the Hammer happens to be displayed on the kitchen counter and you need to crack open a coconut, it will do the job in STYLE!

Quit getting my hammer rusty breaking open coconuts!

Who was the fool that stamped your initials backwards and upside-down anyhow? It sure wasn't me!
