Name is a long-ish story for another time so for now I'll just talk about the garage. I changed jobs around two years ago and after a few weeks of searching found the place I currently have out in the country. One of the big selling points for me was that it came with a 24x32 detached garage. Unfortunately, the garage had a dirt floor, shingles blowing into the yard, and none of the doors would lock. So after lurking on here for a few months, saving my money, and developing a plan, I went to work!

Here's what I started with.

and from the opposite corner

started by hauling the dirt out of there

putting sand and steel mats down

and then the concrete!

Finally a floor! Having concrete in there really changed the feel of the building.

Then it was onto the roof! There was only one layer of shingles on so I just put a new layer over the top. We'll have a hail storm here in central Kansas within the next 15 or 20 years that will take them out and I'll let insurance pay to stip and replace then.

Now it was time to put doors on the building so I could secure the place.

first the service door

then a new 9x7 with opener for the front

and the most complicated one was shoring up and changing the old sliding barn type door on the side to a 9x8.

With the exterior almost complete, I could turn my attention back to the interior. You have to have a nice looking floor so I went with epoxy. There were some initial issues (I made a thread on here) but the company took care of me. I'm happy to say that two years later I'm still very pleased with my decision.

With the garage finally able to be secured, I was able to move a lot of my "stuff" and building supplies inside. I didn't take many pictures of the electrical going in. Nothing special to see about blue boxes anyways. So here's some shots of the insulation going in.

It's so much nicer to work in a place like this when you're not freezing. 60 is much better than 30

I'd say the insulation is working though. It was 65 degrees inside when this picture was taken.

It was at this point that I almost stopped and said, "Close enough, we can work on projects in this." However, I pushed on.

Paint! Paint on the walls! It's really starting to take shape now.

Sure I stole the idea, but why try and reinvent the wheel if you don't have to!?

Put together a motorcycle table from plans I found on gj

Then went about building benches and cabinets. Some of these pictures may be out of order... you'll live.

...hooked up to my old college desktop computer paired to a stereo receiver that I fixed back in high school. I'm close enough to the house to get the wireless internet and I spent a few bucks on Amazon buying indoor and outdoor speakers... I can now drown out the noise from a grinder with tunes!!!

So after doing a bunch of cleaning and putting things away, this is how the garage was after 18 months of work. Just in time to host my 26th birthday party!

I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I am also proud to say that the ONLY things I had hired out were the propane lines ran to the garage, some siding fixed, and the guttering. Everything else I did. I was able to save a ton of money by doing it all myself to. So what do you guys think?

That is an incredible transformation! The place is unrecognizable!

WOW, Awesome job bro you should be very proud! I love it.:beer:

Looking good!

Damn that looks great!!! Good job.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. It really means a lot. There were several times throughout when I was wondering what I had gotten myself into.

Looks great I love the Mach One.

Thanks! I traded an ex-girlfriend for it. Pretty sure I came out ahead both financially and in gained mental sanity.

That has come along way from when you first moved in, great work and i will look forward to more pics in the future. Lee

Thank you. There are still a few more additions to come, but the big items are done.

can you post the motorcycle table plans?
And... how did you get it up there?

Sure can! Give me some time to dig up the plans though. I got it up there the first time by building a crappy ramp made out of 2x8's but I found it much easier to simply back my truck up to the ditch, drop the tailgate, run the bike into the back of the truck, and then back the truck up to the table.

Ambitious Project! Well done handmedown..

Nice job man!

Thanks guys.

One word , AWESOME !!!
Very well done !
Thanks for sharing

Good reason to be proud. You did a great job!

Nice Job..you've done good for yourself for only 26.

I'd be proud to show that garage off. Hell, you even have Red Stripe in the fridge. Wish we were neighbors:beer:!!

Sweet! Very nice shop.

Nice layout!

I really appreciate all the compliments. Thanks a lot. As far as the layout goes, I initially wasn't a fan but then when I started drawing up the plans for this place and I saw what a large working area I was going to have, how I wasn't going to be stumbling over engines or bikes or tools being left out because of how the "work" corner was going to end up, I was pretty excited. The place has ended up dividing itself into 3 areas, work area, project car bay, and daily driver parking, and not one area has spilled over or interfered with another... it's great! I feel like I have plenty of space even with two mustangs, two motorcycles, and engine on a stand, two benches, and a motorcycle table, I don't feel shorted on floor space.

Out of curiosity, what is that garage considered (like 1 car, 3 car etc)

I've been looking for a house, and seeing this it dawns on me that I may be missing out on a good garage because it's consider a 1 car when it's really quite large.

I like the placement of the cabinets on the ceiling there. Really I like the whole garage. I was thinking of a similar paint scheme with different colors.

That stinks about the floor problems. It looks great in the pics but I know you can see all the imperfection and how that feels. I didn't have time to let mine cure properly and scraped off some pretty good chunks.

Nice stang also

Very cool transformation, thanks for sharing the pictures. It really looks great!

enjoyed seeing your progress, great garage you got there! Now its time to use and enjoy!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my work and respond! Right out of college I had a job in KC and I worked in the evening on my projects in a large one car garage. I completely stipped one car down to a roller shell, and built another up in its place. I told myself that my next shop was going to have room, storage, and organization to it no matter what.

It was just big enough to store a car, motorcycle, bench, engine hoist & stand, and everything else you see, and have just enough room to walk around and work on things.

I actually believe this building was listed as a 3 car detached. The house has a 1 car attached garage on it.

Lots of hard work there, and it shows.
And at 26?? wow, you're doing well....

Matthew.

what a great looking place, good job!

Thank you for looking at my thread and taking the time to reply!

It looks great in the pics because I had to go back and redo it. Epoxy Coat really worked with me and even if I had to do it all again, I'd still choose them as my vendor. Yeah, it took more work than it should have, but the end product is one I'm very happy with. The paint scheme was actually a last minute change. I had for the longest time planned on going with Ford Blue accents everywhere. However, I then realized that with my car, toolboxes, motorcycle, and a few other items in there being red, setting against a blue backdrop...well that would look too much like KU to me... and since I don't support the stupid mythical bird school in Kansas, I made it all red. It's actually a decision that I think makes the whole place look better anyways.

Amazing. Great job. I'm envious!

Thank you!

Starting this thread and receiving all this feedback from you guys has me motivated again to keep working on the little things that have yet to be finished. I pulled my spare engine out of a storage shed that it had been sitting in and brought it over and set up an area along a wall where I can work on it. (left side of picture)
e0oevq.jpg

Then I installed an extension chord reel from the ceiling that had been on my to-do list for only about a year. haha

Someone had asked about the motorcycle table plans. Here is the thread that they originally came from
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141942
and here are the plans that I used.
http://dropbarscinder.blogspot.com/2011/03/bike-table-2-revenge.html

The big things that I can think of off the top of my head that are hopefully coming within the next 12-18 months are:
maxjax car lift where the yellow/primer grey mustang sits
240V Mig Welder
240V air compressor and plumbing throughout
Floor storage of some sort. I need a place to put brooms, my mop, ladder, floor jack etc.

I remember this getting started when you posted pics over at AP. I'd say the place turned out great. I'd think you got it done in time to enjoy this long cold winter.

I see you have a bladder tank and heater. did the garage have water to it or what are you using to supply it?
