thanks for the comments.

I have a mechanic friend that got a 1/4" one as a gift last year and today he said it does come in handy so I got one in 1/4" on the way home from work. I noticed that the 1/4" one is not on the website anymore so I don't know if it will be discontinued.

I also picked one of the last good looking 1/4" finger ratchets today and the quality is allot better than I thought. I took both apart to lube them and they were identical and pretty simple and solid inside.

I also bought an extra deep spark plug socket which is going back. it has hard rubber inside that is so far back that it don't hold the spark plug at all. [UPDATE] I rummaged through my toolbox and found unused spark plug inserts for my o-ratchet set that fit like a glove. Now it holds the plugs great. I will keep it.

Update:

Mechanic's creeper (vinyl with flame pattern) - non-tilting head rest. FAIL
- they may not make this one anymore. I paid $15, but the casters will pinch the **** out of your back/underarm depending on how you're laying on it. I'd consider that ****!

brass-handled spring loaded center punch PASS

Went to HF today looking for some bent needle nose pliers and a small pry bar. Found an 11" Pittsburgh bent needlenose for $2.99 - PASS. Also found a Pittsburgh 6 piece spring handle precision plier set which came with flat pliers, nippers, short needle nose, long needle nose, bent needle nose, diagonal cutter for $4.99 - PASS. Next item was a small Torx bit socket set (yes Pittsburgh on that too) combined 1/4" & 3/8" drive on it's own small socket rail. 1/4" drive is T10, 15, 20, 25, 27 and the 3/8" drive is T30, 40, 45, 50 for $6.99 - PASS.

No pic of the $2.99 pry bar but I'd say PASS for that too.

$18 for a few odds & ends made a good trip to HF.

3 Piece Three-Jaw Puller Set=Fail

I only used the 4" one and destroyed it in every way. It never got my harmonic balancer off. The middle threaded area stripped, the bolts on it bent and the pointed tip crumbled.

you really did not use this type of puller on a harmonic balancer
:headscrat

you need a puller like this.....

when pulling a crank pulley you need to pull from the center of it, and i have been know to use the blue wrench from time to time just don't melt the rubber in it

HF has the #3000 lb. lightweigt alum. jack reg $99 on sale for $59. Is this a decent jack for home owner use? I know it`s not an old high quality rebuildable USA jack which I continue to look for. Has anyone been able to use a 20% off on a purchase like this?
Thanks

I got that jack for the $59 on sale and with the 20% coupon it totaled out to $48 tax included. It was a hell of a deal for that type of jack. I do really like the the fact that it's really light and easy to carry compared to my 2 ton steel jack.

Not sure how you can say pass if you havn't even used the item yet? Appreciate the review, but I can't consider anything a pass unless it has been testsed and performed well.

Air Powered Brake Bleeder: PASS

The filler bottle kind of ***** but vacuum bottle works well. I think the filler would work better if there was a valve on the bottle to allow air into it. Flows kind of slow into the reservoir. Bled my Saturn's brakes no problem!

The balancer i have requires the use of a three arm puller. Its a 6.0 liter GM LS motor. I have a puller like the one you posted a picture of and it is not compatable with this type of balancer. Here is a picture...

Anyone here use one of these t-bar wrenches? I'm looking at the 1/4" one.

They look suprisingly well made, and I imagine that they can work well in awkward places.

Thanks,

Chris

I never thought this thing would come in handy, but it was the only way I could remove the bolt on a toyota echo starter without pulling the rad.

I have had one of those for about 2 years.
Not a ton of use but it works well for my bead blasting needs.
Just keep your blasting media dry and use a good vacuum to keep the dust sucked out.
Really wish it had a light in the top.

Had one but didn't use it much. The gloves disintegrated within a couple years. The Chinese couldn't make rubber that lasts. Maybe they can now - who knows??

I picked this up for pulling a low spot out of some ductwork outside that was collecting water. It's an aluminum suction cup lifter. I was very impressed at the pulling power. On a clean, smooth surface that is sturdy I have a very hard time pulling it off.

I had to search for this thread - I'm surprised it isn't a sticky.
On another note, it would be really cool if we had a database for this thread. Not that I know how to do that - I'm more of an idea man. As an example check this overclocking page out:
http://www.amdgeeks.net/overclockdatabase
Something like that would be cool where you could enter a HF number and see what members have said about it.

Found this thread on google and thought I'd contribute. I've gotten a lot of tools from there and haven't had any problems. I work on my 83 GTI project car w/a 16V swap nearly every weekend. I've never had any high end tools but my HF stuff has gotten some pretty heavy use and they get the job done.

I've gotten pretty much everything w/coupons from mags or on sale.

7" Variable Speed Polisher/Sander - Pass- gotten lots of use over two years.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92623

1/2 Electric Impact Wrench- Pass- really heavy though.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=45252

3 Piece Metric Offset Ratchet Wrench Set- Pass have used the **** out these things and still keep working great, require lube occasionally
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90008

Multi-Use Transfer Pump- Epic Fail
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66418

18 Piece Professional Saw Set- garbage, hack saw ***** and blades bend easily
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90446

10 Piece 3/8" Metric Color Coded Socket Set, also have deep socket set - pass color as rubbed off though and hard to read size.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93260

13 Piece Cushion Grip Screwdriver Set- Fail, rubber spins and they crack
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=1847

8 Piece Heavy Duty Screwdriver Set- pass, much better than above mentioned set
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66173

11" Tool Bag- Pass- I use this as my junkyarding tool box, I put a shoulder ******** it. Need to get another, been great.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=35539

Engine Cherry Picker- pass
Engine stand- pass but one of the c-rings for a wheel fell off.
Jack Stands- Pass
Wobble Extender kit- pass, use all the time
Magnetic pick up- broken a few but at $2 whatever.
Nitrate drill bits- eh.. I bent one drilling into a 2x4. I've only used one bit so far.
Blue rubber gloves- ****
The two pack red and blue led flashlights- work so much better with name brand batteries
Numerous tarps- Pass- I get a new one every year for my boat for winter storage
3/8 allen wrench set- pass, the largest one broke though, but I never have a need for it
Metal socket rail- garbage, the holders fall off and bend easily

2 Piece Rubber Strap Wrench Set- worked surprisingly well for unbolting a water pump pulley
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94119

Pittsburg Torque wrench- Fail- wasn't close to being calibrated, I returned it and bought a "name brand" one. My buddy has one that works great though.

Dog leash- had three of them because my dog chews them up ha.

That's all i can think off right now but I know I've bought tons of other stuff.

580lb capacity service cart (bought it with a coupon for 99$)
95659.gif

100% pass! This thing is awesome, and one of the few things I can whole-heartedly recommend from Harbor Freight, especially for $99. Set up was easy (awful directions, but pretty straight forward for anybody on this board) and the fit up was great. Only gripe is that drawers are a bit tough to open/close due to the detents but I am hoping it loosens up. Handles a load nicely. Not super secure, but great for privacy. I use it in a shop where I am not so concerned about people stealing my stuff, but rather using it and leaving it out. Most guys use carts/small boxes with small privacy locks on them. Great Item overall

have their 3 ton jack(steel) use it all the time had it for 3 or 4 years - I'm pretty sure it's this model, but I only paid $49.00 on sale ITEM 34271-0VGA

have a gray jig saw (made in russia) also 7 or 8 yrs old haven't used it a bunch but it works ok ,the trigger is a little funky couldn't find this one, they all have freakin lasers on em now
their nimh AA batteries when caught on sale are pretty good

Finally finished reading all of that....only took me 4 days. Anyway I'll contribute a complete fail that has already been mentioned: black heat gun. I bought it and used it twice before i got the click-click-click of the fan dying.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=66001

A pass was the the the orange heat gun which my dad bought about 3 years ago and never let either of us down.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96289

The 5 drawer service cart is a huge PASS. Extremely well built for the price. Ball bearing drawers are great.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=95272

Just about every hand tool is a pass from me. Pliers, wrenches, etc. The simpler the better. I can't think of one off hand that I would consider a fail.

Earthquake 1/2" impact Tools and Sockets, pass
With coupons I got the 1/2 inch gun and SAE/Metric sockets for 115+tx out the door. I'm not a pro but I've taken apart 3 suspensions already with the 8 gal compressor, and the bolts were rusted on.

Impact:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=2623

Socket: (there is an SAE and Metric)
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94221

Even if I was a pro I would keep those as a secondary backup tool so you don't have to switch sockets. They can be had for around $50 with coupons for SAE and Metric!

Electric Impact - Pass:
On sale with coupons for around $30 it has served me very well, even to have a second impact tool handy with another size socket. It can be serviced and lubed internally, brushes are replaceable:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=45252

Locking pliers (pass). For $5.99 a set on sale now, I'm not saying they are indestructible but they served me very well. Again great backup tool or if you need an extra set:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91684

Long reach pliers (now 2.99 ea) They come in sets too. Were a great help when I did valve stems seals on a Ford 4.6L. There are 4 types (45 bend, 90, straight, 20)

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=33202

Brake dial indicator (pass):
I got it on sale for $15 with a coupon once, use it to check rotor and hub true. Helped me solve an impossible vibration problem once on a relatives car that a shop couldn't find. I use it with every brake job now, check rotor and hub. Also checks ball joint play very precisely. I don't know where a pro tool could be better.

http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa...o?itemid=93051&CategoryName=&SubCategoryName=

6" Digital Calipers(pass)-$9.99!. They are very accurate and repeatable, checked against one that cost $400. I have one that measures fractional units too:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47257

Breaker bar - pass. I've stood and bounced on it taking off hub nuts. A guy in the store when I was online paying said its stronger than the tool truck ones. He has two, in case one breaks he just swaps it out (so far it never did).
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=30395

Torque Wrenches - they checked out to spec but I'm still a bit skeptical. But I read Craftsman is much worse.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=807

Butterfly Impact - PASS. One of my favorite tools. I oil the **** out of my air tools. I took it apart for curiosity and the motor vanes had phenolic (plastic type) composition(don't know if thats good or bad). This tool has to be oiled in two places. I LOVE THIS TOOL, it just feels so right. It does not use that much air either. Even if I had to buy it ever year (for $15-$20) I wouldn't mind. It has very decent torque and I bought some deep 3/8" impact sockets on sale. Last use was to take off my Explorer differential cover bolts.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93100

Air hammer (PASS) - Again - oil the **** out of it. I've used it 30 times already, still good. Even if I threw it away for $10 I got my moneys worth. The attachments are probably worth more than the tool! They are all still in great condition.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47868

Nailer/ Stapler (PASS) used to reupholster a dining room set. For $15 (a rental would have been double or more) it is had done its job. Also used it to install some baseboard.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=97524

Compressor accessory kit (FAIL). A male quick connector split in two pieces. (Its the carded one with all the quick connects, inflator, etc). I paid $5 and threw it out, but some of the other accessories were useful.

8 gal compressor (PASS):
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=95386

For $65, I'm not expecting miracles but its powering my air tools. If I'm careful I can remove all 4 wheels with my earthquake impact without it kicking in. I had to adjust the "forbidden screw" so it kicks on at 85 psi. Its fine for DIY occasional use.

Hose reel (pass). Compressor stays for weeks over 100 psi, so it don't leak. Got it for $12 bucks.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=46342

Oh, and the goodyear air hoses .. who can beat that?

combo brad nailer/stapler- FAIL. Would have been better off buying another $29 bumblebee airplane to fly into someone else's car.

pipe clamp-FAIL; metal casting cracked

500lb table lift cart-PASS; canibalized it for the lift to make an adjustable height work table

Great idea for a thread!

How are things like, Heat shrink tubeing, zipties, wireing, crimp conectors, random wire and nuts/bolts? I need some stuff just for general pourpose. and i dont care about the quality of a bolt/nut that just does something like hold a shelf together.

basicaly all the consoumables.

I also think i'm going to order a swivel head ratchet, torque wrench( why not, good enough for lug nuts), anything thats nice too have but i dont want to buy from craftsman.

Just joined.

I got the Powder coating system: PASS, i have had it for about 6 months and use it alot. Not bad for 70 bucks, better than paying 100-200

The cheapest 4 inch angle grinder (17.99 one): FAIL, it got smoked, and got hot very fast, like 2 minutes. i have a DeWalt thst is basically the same but never gets hot

Multi function power tool: PASS, I and others am pleased with it. the cutting blades get dull kinda quick

40 piece carbon steel tap and die set: PASS, but the tap holder is pretty crappy. But good for 15 bucks

Powder paint: Major Pass: very cheap and works just like other brands

Fine wire wheel for angle grinder: Pass, works fine and didnt fly apart like expected

This place seems pretty good, but like others say, i had good stuff and terrible stuff.

Please sticky this thread!!!!!

I've never believe the day would come when I'd go out of my way to say HF is selling anything I'd honestly recommend, but truth be told I have a couple dozen purchases from there and I bet half have survived the test of time.

My #1 absolute favorite item at this point is the
ITEM 95659-AAA 580lb 5 drawer tool cart.
95659.gif
It took an hour of slow moving to put together and a second set of hands made doing so easier without damage, as someone else mentioned it takes a little oil to silence the squeaks caused by the bars that drop for the drawers to stay locked and the drawer latch "detent" is a little stiff (less than 2 weeks of use currently) and easy to shut the lid without the drawer being fully locked in, but this was a concern I noticed at the store and decided to gamble with it anyhow thinking it would "flow" closed easier with weight in the cart which is the case as it feels like you're going to push it over in the store trying to close it the whole way empty. I purchased it not aware of the $99 coupon so I paid $149 as the current sales price less 20% via the coupon (see other post below about coupon help) and felt it was $119 wisely spent. Having just found the $99 coupon, it may have swayed me from buying another model for lighter duty purposes, ITEM 90428-AAA and just getting a second one of these.

Pros:
  • price
  • ball bearing drawers
  • sturdy when assembled correctly
  • good quality casters / size
  • 5 swivel casters instead of two fixed ones found on other carts making it more mobile for in/out of my storage location
  • comes with drawer liners vs. paying

Cons:
  • method used to attach the casters results in exposed bolts coming up into the bottom tray which holds the mat up, gets in the way of a true flat surface but can be corrected with hardware and creativity (bumper style bolts) if time allowed or allows in the future
  • Claims to be powder coated - if it is, its the thinnest I've ever seen - time will tell.
  • Holes need drilled in the tray that holds the box as the rest on the bottom sides so that longer items like breaker bars, pry bars, etc can be placed in the holes on the side of the upper compartment. Currently the length is limited to the top of this tray but easily corrected without affecting strength I feel.

#2 18 Gauge 2in1 Brad/Stapler ITEM 97525-DAA
97525.gif

I purchased this tool when I decided to start doing upholstery in my then only canvas, canvas & upholstery shop (as in marine canvas). I would have kept using it had I known of a source to buy the staples for it to included stainless steel since they were hard to find at the time two years ago, it didn't fire quite as many blanks as i was experiencing after a few months of use on indoor upholstery, and the complete lack of a safety led to a misfire that came too close to an injury for my comfort. Its still in my box as a backup in case my Fasco fails or goes into the travel box when I go to do a quick repair on a boat since I'd rather see it sink than the better one. If you need a source for replacement staples of better quality than HF, this company has severed my industry well based off reviews on other boards as well as my own experiences.

#3 ITEM 30224-NDD External Mix Spray Gun - used for spray adhesive purposes. Better spray guns exist for contact adhesive in the industry, but for $29 most who use this don't even clean it and just top it off at the end of the day since the external mix keeps it from clogging if the lid sealed good. I just found a coupon in Road & Track in a waiting room the other day that has this for $9 so the thought of buying several to shelf and use over wasting a half hour cleaning it when it finally fails is a no brainer in my production shop.

#4 Creeper seat (sorry, no image - site experiencing problems due to my review apparently). Bought the display model and expect my issues were the result of someone not as concerned with it lasting being the one who put it together as I would have been. Unfortunately I wasn't bright enough at the time to disassemble it and add thread locker to the bolts, especially the caster wheels. They are an oddball caster design with a hex head on the flange of the caster that installs into the frame with a unique (junk) hex head "female threaded bolt" that is an inch of so long. After 1-2 quick tries with blue thread locker, eventually the frame cutout for the caster was stripped, the oddball bolt deal was junked, and I spent more for two new casters than I did the creeper seat. Use red thread locker to make it a one time assembly if you purchase one and even after doing so, if yours breaks down, throw it away and buy a new one for $19 - the foam inside is good for a year before its a block on mediocre wheels, but it did last me quite a bit before it should have been replaced. The closest store to me is 40 miles so I only go when I'm in the area, but I found out afterward that they sell these casters for a few bucks if I recall correctly. Either way... it was time when I gave it a longer life and since I have the means, it will probably get a new piece of foam and vinyl next time someone is standing around with nothing to do...

Some other somewhat less descriptive but fair reviews:
6" Magnetic Parts Tray Good buy on sale for a couple bucks, strong magnet can hold parts in the tray while vertical. Downfall is the ribbed rubber backing on the magnet traps metallic shavings in the grooves after being exposed to shavings of some sort on my bench then scratched the hell out of my toolbox when i put it back in it's storage location... remedied by putting clear packaging tape over the bottom and the 1/2" area outside it, then folded over the edge and held with a zip tie or hose clamp. Honestly, the rubber cover may be removable - but I didn't even try for fear of having to glue it on afterward and tape was in my hands at the moment.

The 4" magnetic parts tray isn't worth the savings over the 6" one - the magnet is half as weak and the same rubber bottom issue applies to this one when it comes to trapping shavings in the grooves of the magnet.

The $7 cutoff wheel (sorry, no site for item number) referenced several times already needs a spin once in a while to get going - been that way since new and oiled religiously but once warmed up works fine.

Harbor Freight Coupons... do not go to the store without printing one or two of these out for the 20% off coupon if you think you'll buy something that day... or leave them in the truck for the random purchase we're all guilty of. These should be pushed to the top of the thread if this becomes a sticky based off how many times people ask for them in the hundreds of posts before this one IMO.

As of today's date, these all work and should for a long time based off how they're generated from their site. When these expire, new ones replace the current ones...

Note there are 7 different "similar" links below - some are repeats, but each worth looking at because different items show up on different pages at times. Note that none of these show a page I ripped out of a mag recently that has an earlier expiration date than the current ones posted, so keep your eyes on the mags for what you want too for an older than currently on the web but not quite expired coupon if you know what I mean. This is proof that they change from "time period to time period" I guess. Unfortunately, one of these could have saved me $50 a few weeks ago had I saw it sooner so check them out if you're a regular HF shopper or a random one like me considering a purchase - I guess I'm a web coupon junkie or something to spend the the time I took to gather these, but when you can save 20+% by hitting print its a no-brainer to me.

Magazine Coupon #1
Magazine Coupon #2
Magazine Coupon #3
Magazine Coupon #4
Magazine Coupon #5
Magazine Coupon #6
Magazine Coupon #7

These are the same coupon pages you get by going to sites like
http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/carcraft or by replacing carcraft with whatever mag you found a link in and visited from, they just clock where you came from and re-direct it to these 7 different sites above depending on which magazine I believe.

HF not your thing, but you're not above a Kobalt tool or buying anything at Lowe's? Check this out - used it dozens and dozens of times exactly as the guy advertises (no its not me, probably an insider at Lowe's). Its an automated purchase setup via PayPal (found on eBay originally) that instantly emails a PDF of the single use, bar coded coupon (or multiple PDF files if more than 1 is purchased). I've never had a problem with these ones in 3+ years I've used them at Lowe's. I used to print two copies and take the second one to the Home Depot next door, but they caught on eventually and quit taking them at my location which I'd guess was from frequent abuse of the same bar coded coupon I used 20+ times originally when a legit coupon was sent via Lowe's when I filled out the "I moved" deal on their site to get one originally and found out HD took them. I won't walk into either store without one though...

Don't know if the thread was intended to work this way, but anyone have a call on this:

42202.gif

Friend has one, we used it quite a bit without problems. I do believe he replaced the gloves at some point, but I would expect that.

Honestly, I wouldn't mess with consumables. Maybe if you need some really cheap bolts/nuts for very light duty stuff, but IMHO there is no place for poor quality heat shrink, wiring, connectors, etc.

Pop rivets where you don't expect much from them, yes. Basically, plan on it being low quality for those type of items. If it's a spot where that won't matter, then go for it.

I just bought the combo metric/sae T-Handle allen set from Pittsburg tool. Pass big time. Has a life time guarantee. A must for every shop.
