Thanks Terrick, Not Been as massive an undertaking as I see your busy with, builds like yours amaze me in respects to the sheer scale that can be achieved with relatively little outside input and a personal dream. Still taken me 8+ years to get this far... which doenst really feel far at all. Sometimes just need to pull up the images of what I started with (glorified Hoarders Storage room) to remind myself that progress has been made.

Thanks for that info BD, Been trying to find more information online about them. always great to learn the history behind things. South Africa has always felt like a 'Drought' when it comes to finding the really good stuff... I blame GJ for all future Addictions and Tool 'Collections'... As is the case with "Budget" workshops its always a struggle between Need/Want/Afford/Just a good Deal I cant pass up/and what I currently have...

Its been a Long time with no updates... But I have been Exploring the GJ for gathering my ideas. Need to actually sit down organise the pics and Post the updates now. Had a son during my hiatus so as a young father of two working two jobs its been a busy time. It ***** to only get an hour or 3 in the shop once a week/month when I manage to... My time management is horrible...

However I have been very busy in that time making the most of the productive minutes I can find. The layout has changed slightly again having acquired more shelving for storage and my Massive middle bench is gone. I havn't been making Skateboards for awhile and I only had it that size to make the cutting of the laminates easier, its just so thin that its awkward to work on it without a full table supporting each sheet.

The Waterloo box is in storage... I've been collecting some nice old Boxes that I will begin restoring in due time. I've started the breakdown and restoration of My Duro 3220 Metal Bandsaw. After getting everything apart Ive discovered it threw a bearing which has subsequently eaten into the main shaft causing play on the shaft. Its been a long road trying to find a small engineering shop to make me a new one. Always way to many excuses... Its Tempered Steel. Its too small to recreate, it needs specially imported steel... All Hogwash as far as I'm concerned - its a 1/4 inch shaft roughly 6" long... it was made in a time and day with even less engineering capabilities than today how is it it cant be done today? (Moon landings Anyone?hahaha)

I have finally managed to get hold of an old engineering buddy of mine who works in the Mining Fabrication Sector. He took one look, took some measurements. Said I should have Two Shafts by month end... Here is hoping...

I've been busy with my new main table build. I honestly don't know how guys get more work area into spaces similar to mine... 12 Gauge garage in particular... but at least its a nice manageable size with really heavy duty castors that as I add to it it should keep up with the weight... and its another surface to work on...

Thanks Dennis, funny in that it was Jacks Thread that got me going on here. There really truly are some Amazing Story Tellers on this site. Bob Hein is one of them... I read his stories on his thread and it actually feels like your reading a novel...

I think I can categorically state that my Pops was very Proud of me... Just for taking an interest in the workshop really hahaha. My older Brother never got into the tools, but man he will sell you one you don't even need. The gift of the Gab...

My father has been gone for two years now... But I know he would be happy with what has been done to "his" shop... On that though... I now fully understand why Dad used to have all the units locked with me as a very young child following him in the workshop.... My son joins me on most my missions (while I kinda Take him with - He is only 2 so the interest is sill just the wonder of new things I think) and if I take my eyes off him for even a moment, he is in the drawers and cupboards misplacing the tool I just so happen to need next... Like Grandfather, to Father, to Son... (Don't worry all the really dangerous things are up high and out the way... He really likes the Tape measure and the Flat File)

As for SA... we have our troubles... which country doesn't? I have only been to Europe in my travels so cant comment on the rest of the world but we really do have something special this side of the planet. The weather the sunsets, the open space and the food... Definitely world Class for a "third" world Country..." If you ever get the chance to visit DO IT!!! The exchange rate works in favour to Tourists so a little for you goes a looong way this side... We are a lot older in heritage than most realise (I stand to be corrected but we have the Second oldest Movie Industry in the world) so there is a lot to see... From Bush, to Mountains to Coast... all in a well packaged easy to travel sized Country...

Congrats on the new kiddo! You kind of just slipped that fact in there, I didn't even notice it when I read that post a few months back. I've only got one (so far) myself, but I know how it can sometimes be frustrating when you can't find time to get into the garage. Instead of saying that your time management is horrible, I would argue instead that you probably have your priorities in line. Providing for your family and spending time with them is far more important than finishing your workbench. Your boys will be grown up and out of the house in less than 20 years, keep spending time with them while you can!

BD, Thanks for supportive words, Unfortunately my time management is indeed terrible. I would easily find another two hours in a day If I could nail down a decent routine. Just seems to change from day to day based on Kids work life etc... I guess my current routine is I don't really have one... I have a good friend who is coaching me at the moment in getting things properly prioritised and layed out. Its slow Progress, but I'm not in any rush, It has already helped me find more time to switch off (something Im really really bad at doing - But I believe is necessary for a Happy soul, cant be doing 200mph all the time without a burn-out occuring.)

Ive managed to get all my (crappy) photos sorted. I lost my camera a year or so ago and for a photographer its been a very painful Experience... I just don't have what I need to be able to replace it currently and for a long time I said I wouldn't bother taking any images if the quality wasn't up to scratch. I eventually decided stuff it so have moved forward with just using the phone camera for now. Its still gets the point across

HSpencer - I should be starting to post in the next week or two again on whats been going on shop side. I tend to sit with an issue for a few months with not knowing how to move forward with something. Biggest problem is tying to plan for every eventuality. including those that will never occur...(completely unnecessary) GJ has been a life saver and when I let go of the "problem" I generally find a solution on here... Funny how that works...

Ive managed to tool up a bit more, focus more on what can be done and not so much what I want to do. (which stops me in my tracks cos you know - How Am i going to do that, Oh I dont have this, oh ill need that... just builds and builds and nothing happens.

Big Things are Coming.... Watch this space.

And so it still goes on...

So Finally have what has survived in terms of images uploaded and ready to go. So lets get to this.

Its been awhile since I've last post any form of updates. Happy to say I have kept busy with the limited time I find these days to sneak off to the workshop. Its not that I cant get there, but more often than not, I've got the kids with me, and that can sometimes make getting the "Large" jobs completed a little difficult with little ones under foot. It has enlightened me far more towards garage safety I must say and there are a few things in future that will need some attending to so that the little ones don't end up with some form of Damage from trying to get there hands places they shouldn't be.

That however is far more recent. Lets take a few steps back over quite a few months. Ill do my best to try keep this in chronological order but it may jump around a bit as I recover more of my photos.

So if you all rememeber this

So after a little research it became very apparent that trying to restore the old Atlas Drill press would be an almost impossible task. There were just to many pieces missing in important places to try make it viable. Also I have Pops old perfectly Working Walker Turner DP and my little Hobby craft Bench top DP so another one would have been unnecessary. It does have Plenty of Salvageable parts though so I figured this would be the best route.

I wanted to make a vice stand so Took the Truck wheel, Welded in a plate, Cut the Atlas DP Shaft to height (Nice 5mm wall Tube) and made a base.

Well the welds were cooling on the Base of the future vice stand I started the cleanup of the Atlas DP table - It was in pretty good nick, no major arc of shame but it had seen some abuse...

After attacking it with a file to remove the welding slag and hitting with plenty sandpaper working my way through the grades it was looking shiny again. I wasn't bothered with a complete clean as in the Base image I was going to be mounting my DP vice onto it...

This was then mounted onto the Walker Turner DP. I now have Two table on there. One flat for general drilling. and then this one with Vice attached for more complicated drilling procedures. Will take an Update pic soon.

I didn't want to weld a plate directly to the top of the Post on the base. I figured it made it far too 2 Dimensional. I wanted to be able to use the Heavy base for other attachments as I went along and created them. The base is super heavy btw... I welded a large bolt underneath to accept and attach a further 20kg dumbbell but haven't needed to as yet Its got such a wide foot print its extremely stable.

So I came up with an Idea on how to make some collars that would allow me to bolt the Relevant plates onto it...

I cut it out of some old Drive Shaft I have in my junkpile outside. it was about 2mm too large in ID over the Main Poles OD. But with the Bolt squeezing the relief Cut I made its Really tightly attached. like incredibly. it does not turn or slide or shimmy. It feels as good as welded. I was originally planning on Keying it onto the Pole but really have no need to now.

Now I could weld the Plate to the top of that and then mount the Vice.
So in prep for that I got the Vice all broken down and cleaned up.

Its a big one. at least the biggest I've ever owned. Its a Record. and Old one... quality is great but the anvil section took a beating... This was part of my original purchase of the band saw, wire shelves, Vice, and a few other odds and ends from a friends father who was immigrating back to the UK. Got the whole lot for a few hundred Rands...

The Legacy Garage - Dremel Scrollsaw

While I had the Paint out for the vice I figured Id tackle another restore.

My pops Original Dremel Scroll Saw. It was running very rough, Horrible Vibrations and was a little worse for wear. I discovered the main housing had been bent out of square. A little Panel Beating and some paint, regressed all the Guides and bearings, replaced rusted and worn nuts and bolts, and it looks brand new. Unfortunately I have no before images and will take some new ones with it all completely bolted back together. I do need to find new Rubber feet for it though as the old ones have completely perished through

Its now running Butter smooth. I have future use for this guy in some intricate wood cutting I have planned for a future project. Im glad its one more tool that is now ready to go.

The Legacy Garage - A few small Changes

Around this time I wanted to start changing things around a little in the shop again. I completely blame GJ for this, and specifically the great ideas of other members.

This is basically where I was sitting with it. I was pretty gatvol of always having to setup machines to use them. They all needed a good service in one way or the other. And with the massive 1.2x2.4 table in the middle when something was setup it was just awkward and painfull. I know it looks rather "organised" in the image but really everything was just crammed away. I needed more storage.

I had picked up a great set of medium/heavy duty Wire shelves along with the big vice and Duro Bandsaw. They were sitting in storage in the backroom filled with the households generational keepings.

I dug them out (sorry no photos), gave everything a good scrub and clean, Applied some Rust converter on the few areas which had some surface rust and got to task putting them in. I do have plans to paint them... and need to take photos of my Rollerblade Castor Wheel Mod.

I had to sacrifice the Pegboard to get everything to fit.

But it was just the start. I was now planning ahead but still had no clue on everything would Ideally fit together. I have some direction with my steps... build pics to come, as well as some important new tools that would open up some new projects.

In the above image you will see bottom right corner a monstrosity of a cut off saw. It was a locally made vintage steel abrasive cut-off saw (Transvaal Engineering Company). I got a really good cheap deal on it. It was built like a Bunker never mind a tank. Took 4 Burly individuals to move this around. But it is 3 phase - I only have single... I looked into swapping motors, converters, etc but eventually decided on clean up and Sell and Purchase a Smaller Light Industrial unit... Soooo close to being able to better cut steel... yet still so far...

So here it was...

Built.... "Back in the day!!" Not sure which day exactly and probably during a period of not necessarily very "good" days as far as our history goes... I even considered just keeping it and taking it apart and reusing the odds and ends for other ideas. The "Vice" was Machine Slot Mounted, could Rotate well past 45 deg each side and was just a beast all round. It used a 440mm disc. also making finding new discs both expensive and difficult, our "normal" store stocked size is the 330-350mm disc

This however did make the cut...

I did plenty of reading... reviews... and even played the dumb interested buyer at all the "Normal" Store shops to see what each ones main sales pitch was...

It came down to the Bosch, Makita, and the Dewalt.

The Dewalt was the most expensive. It didn't have any specific feature that the others didn't, nor was it any better made in specific regards, I did like the Horizontaly configured Handle over the Verticaly configured handles of the Bosch and the Makita . The Bosch actually had the Thickest Gauge Material for the base out of the 3 (maybe they add more paint) from what I could tell. The Makita lost out simply because I prefered the lock down system on the Bosch more - chain lock for makita which irritates me because its fiddly and is sloppy where the Bosch has a Slide Pin On main-Hinge-Lock Configuration.

An Ol'Ballie (Slang for Anyone older than you are in SAFA - Slang for South African... Eish!!!!) contacted me after it had been online for awhile. He had a Gate making Business and had burned out 3 Machines already ("Normal" Store Type). He was happy to give me the cash then and there and was back the next day with a small army to move the bunker... er... Cut off machine...

I got this with the exact amount I sold the Beast for. All in all I lost 300 Rands (google it to your currency dammit...) on the Iron Giant but was super happy to finally be able, to better cut Steel. Before I'd been stuck with a selection of 115 disc capacity grinders... Fun on anything bigger than 60mm diameter...

Now I have put my shop into 3D, I have drawn it out, I have spent hours contemplating the layout. I have thought of Trick systems to get the stairs out the way open up some space again (they take out quite an awkward chunk of floor and wall space). How to build new benches, combine machines and setups yada yada yada... you all know how it thinks before it goes...

Then one day Esteemed colleague in design and lifelong friend Mr Thompson hit me with the wet preverbial fish with a single comment... "You're never going to win till you get the stairs 'bolted' down"

Holy ****...

Granted he just meant 'bolted' down as in a solid plan made, but it struck a thought...

In reference to the band Offspring - Damnit its changed again!!!

Continued the Everything on castors Mission. Its just angle iron welded into a "tub" - some good quality but not bank breaking castors welded to the bottom and black paint.

Units just drop in... No further attachment... they stay in under thier own weight

Bang On!!! I had the solution, just needed to figure out how to put it together in my case. I like the Idea of "reclaiming" the lost wall space behind it, it also makes the staircase more functional 'daily', than just occasionally when searching my general supplies upstairs and needing to actually walk up it.

So clean up time... A "quick" (like 12+ weeks now - yeah right!!!) re-Organise and supply gathering mission. I fall deep into the category of always having too much month left at the end of my paycheck... Still certain things you can do for free. Such as:

Sort out the Junk in the roof,

Weld up more unit bases

Swing the shelves (oh look its how they originally started out...)

This unfortunately took out the rest of the pegboard tool wall...

Yay... more holes to fill... and another reason to paint again... Dont ever have a cheap wall screed done... its the worst to keep clean...

My Son has joined me in the "Dark" Side of the force -

He just turned 2 - he is an incredible little man... We learnt from the recent parent/teacher evening that he is well appreciated at school and is the class clown, Dads little helper, Except in the presence of mom... in which case you can hear him think "who are you that I should be interested in you????"

This disaster of wood storage is still causing me headaches... But Ive turned it into this for now...

I'm starting to wonder if there is a sort of energy vortex that causes things in the workshop to just rotate around... The Drill Press is back between the doors... Its been a bit of a change that... no change that back debacle...

An "Oi Vey" from the family was to be expected...

So with it being easter weekend I managed a Few good Solid hours down in the workshop. First on friday (With kids - Didnt get too much done) then Sunday (without kids - Got Sooooo Much Done)

Following up on EddyP's Pegboard over Staircase Idea I got to work.

First up was to redo the steps. The Inclination was changing so I figured rather just redo everything than just make things work.

Got the Stairs Down, Taken apart, Remarked and Set to work.

Clamped the Two Sides together to make it easier... Retrimmed both the top and bottom to the Correct Angle. Then proceeded to Drill the Holes. This time I made sure to Sink Everything to allow a flush outside panel edge

Got Everything leveled on the steps then Locked it all in place

My system uses one Super Large (150mm) bolt down the middle on each side. Set the step to level with a level, and Then Sink two smaller 100mm bolts each side to keep it steady. Not Ideal, But works for my setup and supplies on hand.

I then got the bracket for the top of the stairs Sorted out. Its just a cross piece between the two beams. Bolted on one side then Using offcuts I made a bracket for the other side being unable to bolt it from the wall...

The wall side is then just Screwed onto the bracket to keep everything up. The way the angle works on the Steps its technically pushing against the Bracket system so there isnt any "straight' Down Sheer Weight.

I then began preparing the brackets to hold the Pegboard. I needed an Offset because of the way I planned to put the whole deal together.

And the final Top Bracket with spacer off main Roof Beam

Thankfully I had a piece of Roof Beam stashed away that would be Tall enough. I trimmed up the top to allow Clearance for My I-Beam got it plummed square then marked out the measurements. I went wrong here... Half of 1220 is 610... Not 660... Yeah... Anyway...

Got the Top Bracket for the Vertical Support Welded in...

Not my best welding, nor the fact that in general I can't weld upside down... Its attached, Was slightly skew... Beat it right with a hammer... its definitely attached!!!!

I needed to make sure there was enough of a gap on the side to allow electrical conduit to go through... That's another mission I haven't even started planning yet.

Didn't feel like Chiselling away at so much material... that and the wood is so old and so dry and my chisels being less than razor sharp I figured get rough with the drill!!!

Continued trimming up the Cross supports for the Pegboard Stair wall on the table saw... Suddenly the piece jams... Then the kind of sound you expect from someone falling into a meat grinder... Thankfully the Anti kickback on my guard kept everything in place... Immediate shutdown to reveal what went wrong...

Time to make another zero clearance insert for the table saw... Got about 20+ years out of this one... cant complain... thankfully it was nothing worse and the noise was just the piece turning into chips...

Time to skin the wall...

Would have preferred black screws... But again using whats on hand. Some washers to clean them up

No - I did not Clock the screws!!! Shameful I know... But time is of the essence and clocked screws were not the flavour of the day...

Took a little bit of trial and error to get a good consistent Screw Layout.
Bottom Piece on as well

and all trimmed flush with a Jigsaw and belt Sander using the bottom of the stairs as a Flush Guide...

Fresh pegboard just wouldn't be complete without a test hang

Finally somewhere for my straight edges...

Then added a little more

Now comes the fun of figuring out what goes on it and in what layout... at least its all my rulers and straight edged accounted for for the time being and not having them all lying loose on a table getting scratched and Bent...

I can at least say that in the last while this is one project I've managed to complete...

I know I know... But I'm expecting some modifications to occur so will get everything clocked once I'm finished putting screws in and out... Some guys on this forum just make space management look easy... I struggle I wont lie im horribly indecisive - but for good reason... I just want efficiency and a place for everything (common) and everything in its place.

Yeah I don't think it works anymore... short of strippers, they see right through my - "a few small things to help with and beer" illusion. I did have my good Mate Marty in the shop today and what you can get done with two guys working forwards and backwards from each other is incredible... I think I got 3 Weekends worth of work done today.

The Legacy Garage - A day of Remembrance

Today was a good day...

I had a lot to get sorted. Got a fair bit done... But didnt manage to take pics of it all.

Have finally begun my shed rebuild... Future Additional storage. Already have a fantastic 3mx7m (9x21 foot roughly) tin shack shed. The foundation has seen been days and as the property has slowly eroded (its on a slope not massive but enough) so has the foundation it sits on. Got its immediate area cleaned up and got the first 'Test' Trench dug to test a plan I have. Build images will follow once I'm in full swing.

As for the shop.

Got to starting the revamp on my pops old bench

Its the one the left with all the **** and the toolboxes.

Dad built it before I was born... Its had a long hard life. its also only 750mm high... I'm a full head taller than my pops was I'm 5ft something... Its still very low... But I knew that it would fit well under the stairs arrangement now. It would become its permanent new home (Please stop moving things...) and I didn't want to really change it all that much. I trimmed the top to fit and plan on cleaning it up. Replaced a few screws and reinforced once or two brackets...

The edges were all pretty beaten up even between the joins.
So top off

Whip out the table saw

Clean up the edges

Not entirely sure what wood this is...

Will be attacking this with a belt sander in the near future... We always just cleaned out brushes on the front of the unit its gathered some paint over time... I'd like to take it back to raw wood with an oil...

I cut up a new Bottom shelf with some left over ply. Its now full size of the bottom. Didn't get a pic, will next time

Top back on and table in place for now... Will be pulling it back out to work on it further...

My mate Marty then had a pretty awesome Idea... Give the table an engraving on the front. I always called my dad 'Father Joe'. Don't know why just did... Mostly in my more adult years. Ours was a house for lost kids as my mom would put it and all the friends knew him as Papa Joe... He was a father to a few more than just me...

Marty was one of them having come from a mother only houselhold. He did some simple writing... I approved... and he got carving. No previous experience. Just attempt it... the way dad would appreciate it...

It says "Papa Joe - 1929 - 2015"

Hey Knyte, I'm just finding this thread now. You're doing a nice job making it your own.

What a great space. Keep up the great work.

Also, it's nice to see that no matter where you are in the world, if you have a work space you're all dealing with the same issues of balancing space, clutter and organization.

I know you've been over to the restored 1930's workshop thread... Mr Johnson's old shop... I think he takes the cake for clutter and organisation just mushed into one... how he managed...???

Also recently aquired 2 more shelves for my Filing cabinet... Been desperate for more but havn't needed another unit, just want shelves... and didn't want to try substitute for wood as I knew it would bother me... Good luck finding anyone selling the shelves only...

Got these from a neighbor. Came up in random conversation and he was like there is one out back he doesn't use check that take what I need... The unit had been living outdoors for many millenia... Civilisations messages of long lost epocs scarred its sides. I battled wasps and spiders and other unknown wildlife in my quest to recover them from a rust encrusted carcase... The tops had some rust from standing water but underneath they still looked brand new... They were in great shape considering, easily saved and still structurally sound.

Hit them with the Wire brush, Then painted with rust converter... I really do have praises to sing for that stuff... A short while later I had a base coat I could paint... Then promptly ran out of the same colour enamel. Im trying to use up the last bits of tins and kinda underestimated the spread rate...

So one is grey and one is black.............

I still have two shelves to fit... Fantastic - Balance - Space - No Clutter hahahahaha

Also have a place for my Shop Recruited Vac in the cupboard now. One extra item with a place...
