The welder arrived with the materials to construct the columns that will support the beams located in the Lone Beech Garage.

The components were in his truck and on a trailer.

20160112-14.jpg 20160112-15.jpg

Considerable time was taken welding and grinding these components on the site.

20160112-16.jpg 20160112-17.jpg

The completed work: A couple of columns a bit under 15-feet long for the Chain Hoist Beam and a couple about 11-feet long for the Mezzanine Beam.

The telehandler was used for the last time today.

20160112-21.jpg 20160112-22.jpg

The last of the OSB was lifted to the roof. I thought this had already been done. We may have had another delivery in the past couple of days that I was unaware of.

20160112-23.jpg

Felt Paper was lifted to the roof.

20160112-24.jpg

...and then it was time for this very useful piece of equipment to go home.

The Electrician dropped off the main load panel.

20160112-33.jpg 20160112-34.jpg 20160112-35.jpg

The rafters continued to be added to the east end of the building and OSB was nailed to the trusses and rafters to form the roof.

20160112-36.jpg 20160112-37.jpg

Building wrap was applied to most of the base of the building. I suspect this was done in preparation for the Masons to begin work with the wainscoting.

I have been called out on a trip to Nice, France. Tomorrow I'll ride up to JFK and then fly to Nice. 48 hours there and then return to Atlanta via JFK. I should be back on Sunday.

The weather is supposed to be cold but clear. We are forecast to have a day of rain on Friday but then the clear weather should continue.

I expect there will be quite a bit accomplished while I am gone.

Looking good. I like the idea of the in ground electrical coming up into a box. Should make electrical installation and maintenance easier.

Wednesday - January 13, 2016

I left my home for the airport at around noon. I took a few pictures of the framers putting down OSB on the rafters & trusses just before I left.

20160113-01.jpg 20160113-02.jpg

Sunday - January 17, 2016

I returned from the French Riviera last night. When I got back to Peachtree City, GA it was 19 hours after my wakeup call in my hotel room that morning. It was also too dark to see anything. That had to wait until this morning.

Before church I grabbed a cup of coffee and my camera; I walked out to look over what had been done in my absence. While quite a bit had been accomplished, the amazing changes of the 40 days (slab pour & framing) are mostly past. From here on out the changes will continue to come but will be less dramatic.

20160117-01.jpg

The shingles were delivered.

20160117-02.jpg

The windows had been installed.

20160117-03.jpg 20160117-04.jpg 20160117-05.jpg

The Electrician had begun fishing wire via the conduit from Circuit Breaker Panel to a few Outlet Boxes.

Perhaps more dramatic that what had been added was what had been removed...

20160117-11.jpg 20160117-12.jpg

The temporary walls had been removed from the Auto/Metal Shop area of the Lone Beech Garage. With the roof deck mostly in place, these missing walls really allowed me to start to see how the spaces were going to look. I'm happy to report that it is looking the way I had hoped it would.

20160117-13.jpg 20160117-14.jpg

20160117-15.jpg 20160117-16.jpg

Now we move to the east end of the building and the 5 foot overhang. While I wasn't here when it was being built, I'm sure that it is a tedious process to get this part of the structure correct.

20160117-17.jpg

Stepping away from the building gives an overview of what was accomplished after I left on Wednesday. Thursday I believe work continued but it rained on Friday so no framing work was done.

The weather forecast is for cold clear days until midweek; rain is possible after that. While I wish we could get the shingles on before the rain hits, I think that's overly optimistic.

The roof doesn't look too complicated and I would be willing to bet that if a roofing crew were able to start first thing in the morning they'd have the entire thing shingled in one day. They may have to do some odds and ends after, but I'll be crossing my fingers for you.

JB,

Thanks for the encouragement!

I agree that a roofing crew should be able to knock this out pretty quick. It is a simple roof. I just don't think the framers will be able to get their work done quickly enough to allow the roofers to get at it before the weather gets here.

Hopefully I'll be wrong.

Best regards,

Scott

Monday - January 18, 2016

Clear but below freezing this morning when the framers arrived.

20160118-01.jpg 20160118-02.jpg

Attaching the rafters for 5-Foot overhang on the southern side of the Lone Beech Garage.

20160118-03.jpg 20160118-04.jpg

This is painstaking work with much cutting and fitting accomplished as the elements of this part of the build come together. Note the individual pieces between the rafters in the picture on the right.

20160118-05.jpg 20160118-06.jpg

The decking was placed and nailed down.

20160118-07.jpg

At the end of the day this is what had been accomplished.

Tomorrow is supposed to be clear but start off with temperatures in the high teens. There is a chance that we may be able to get the shingles on by Wednesday evening but, at the moment, that appears to be a long shot. Rain showers are predicted starting Wednesday night and continuing through Thursday. Friday's forecast is for a 100% chance of rain.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Tuesday - January 19, 2016

Another clear and a bit colder morning. It is noticeable that the days are getting longer and the sun is coming up earlier than a month ago. Despite the sun coming up earlier, the Framers arrived at about 9:30 am. The cold temperatures delaying their arrival time.

20160119-01.jpg

It looks like before the Framers arrived, the last window was delivered and placed inside the Lone Beech Garage. This window will be in the east wall of the upper room.

20160119-02.jpg 20160119-03.jpg 20160119-04.jpg

The remaining work was done on the 5-Foot overhang.

20160119-05.jpg 20160119-06.jpg

The west end of the building had OSB sheathing cut to size and nailed down. The framing on this end of the building is pretty much complete.

20160119-07.jpg

At the end of the day most of the roof framing was complete but a few details remain. I was hoping that the roofers would be able to start tomorrow morning but we're not there yet.

Today I also gave the go-ahead to a contractor to run a gas line from the natural gas service at the south end of my house to the Lone Beech Garage. This contractor will also be installing a on-demand natural gas water heater. I had been dealing directly with this contractor as I was trying to decide on electric vs. natural gas for this task. Numbers finally in hand for the gas line installation, I handed the coordination of this installation over to the Builder.

C_F,

Thanks - it looks like a building now. It's hard to believe there's still so much to do.

I don't think the Builder even bothered trying to get the roofers out to the site today. It was the right call as it started sprinkling rain at 1:30 pm.

We've got the roofing felt on so that helps a lot!

Best regards,

Scott

Wednesday - January 20, 2016

The sky was not as blue this morning and it wasn't as cold. We're in for a change in the weather.

20160120-01.jpg 20160120-02.jpg

The roofing felt was nailed down on all of the roof deck.
It was good to get that done as it started raining at 1:30 pm.

20160120-03.jpg 20160120-04.jpg

Protected by the 5-Foot overhang, the Framers nailed up the exterior sheathing on the east side of the Lone Beech Garage. In the second picture the Framer looked down on me standing in the light rain and quipped, "This is the piece we've been looking for."

20160120-05.jpg

As the rain fell, I walked into the back yard of my house and then turned to take a quick snapshot of the building.

20160120-11.jpg 20160120-12.jpg

Earlier in the day a delivery truck pulled onto the building site and unloaded 5 doors. These are all the exterior doors and one of the interior. Two more doors - bathroom & double-doors to the Woodshop - are yet to be delivered.

20160120-13.jpg

Around noon the Electrician arrived and pulled more wires through his conduit. He was still on the site as the Framers left for the day.

There is still much for the Framers to do.

There are little "Shed Roofs" that go over a couple of the exterior doors.
The stairs to the Mezzanine Landing need to be constructed.
The supporting metal columns need to be placed under the I-Beams.
The Mezzanine window needs to be installed.
Doors need to be installed.

It is supposed to rain until Saturday and then the next 7-days are either clear or a low chance of rain. Hopefully the good progress that has been made recently will continue next week.

Congrats you are now have a "roof" over your head and the only big holes in the walls will be filled with doors. This is another little milestone you can celebrate!

It is a very cool transition when you go from an open construction to an enclosed structure. For a building of that size I agree that gas is an excellent way to go. Almost enjoying your build more than mine!

JB,

Thanks!

It really does change things. The inside is looking so much like a workplace that I can't wait to get all my tools and stuff moved in.

A long ways to go yet.

Dadofour,

It is truly a building now - still got many bells & whistles to go.

The natural gas line is for the tankless water heater. I'm using mini-split systems for the heating and air.

It will be good to have the gas available in the building should there ever be a need for it beyond the water heater.

Best regards,

Scott

Truly appreciate the kind words!

I am pleased with the progress and it does all seem to be coming together. The hard work is trying to visualize how any modification to the plan affects the other work being already scheduled.

That's part of the fun!

Thursday - January 21, 2016

A cool gray day dawned today. However, it wasn't raining (yet) work could be accomplished,

20160121-01.jpg

Blocking was nailed into the open areas between the roof and the wall.

20160121-03.jpg 20160121-04.jpg

The Mezzanine window hole was cut out of the OSB sheathing.

20160121-02.jpg 20160121-05.jpg

20160121-06.jpg 20160121-07.jpg

The ceiling joists were constructed and nailed into place in the drive through bay of the Lone Beech Garage.

Rain started mid-afternoon and continued though the rest of the day...

A couple of the Steel Columns that will support the I-Beams were placed into position.

20160121-14.jpg 20160121-15.jpg 20160121-16.jpg

The Electrician continued running his rough wiring.

Today the Electrician and I discussed the positioning of the lighting fixtures. I have a very nice lighting plan, designed by Plantonic Solid of GJ, but some tweaking is required to accommodate the Garage Door Rails.

Today I also had a Low Voltage contractor arrive late in the day to discuss a Security System and a CCTV system. That proposal had been emailed to me just before the Christmas holidays. I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina when this email arrive and when I got home from that trip I forgot about that email due to holidays and such.

I remembered the email yesterday and called that sub this morning to discuss details of his proposal. He arrived early evening and we walked the building, establishing what needed to be done. He indicated that they could get out next week and put in the rough wiring for the security and CCTV.

I intend to have him do that work.

Looking good Scott! Now that all that lumber is getting thrown in there your wife must really be questioning the size of that garage.. Ha!

I may need to get the # of the CCTV guy from you some time. Looking for one here at the hideaway.

I signed up here to view all of the creativity in designing a personal garage and must say I'm in awe thus far of your setup. I'd love to see this monster in person at some point. On another note, you won't be disappointed in your decision to go NG tankless, it's by far been the best decision I made in regards to my personal home. If you are in need of someone to install the underground or anything else related to the NG, please pm me (I know I may be too late on that one).

Alan,

When my spouse is outside she just keeps looking at the Lone Beech Garage and then at me ...and then back at the Garage and then at me - all the while saying to nobody in particular (but I am within earshot), "I am the greatest wife in the world."

It's kind of like one of those Jedi mind tricks.

Sending a PM with CCTV guy info. He's in Fayetteville.

As for the Jedi Mind Trick... it wasn't necessary. I already knew she was the best wife in the world. Ha!

Best regards,

Scott

Josh,

Thanks for the very kind words regarding this build. You'd be welcome to visit any time.

Thanks for the NG tankless endorsement.

Yeah, you're probably right about being too late on this one. However, it wouldn't be the first time a promise wasn't fulfilled. I'll keep you in mind should this go pear-shaped.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Friday - January 22, 2016

Today the building site was silent except for the constant patter of rain hitting red Georgia clay.

Tonight the rain is expected to slowly change state from liquid to solid. A wintery mix is happening as I write this and snow (gasp!) is expected before sun-up.

All of this unpleasantness is supposed to diminish as the weekend progresses.

Couldn't do much outside today so...

20160122-01.jpg 20160122-02.jpg

I made a spacer to place in the masonry that is supposed to be laid next week. This item was made out of some leftover Styrofoam that the slab contractor used to form a brick ledge in the slab. It was 6-inches tall and I needed it to be 6-1/4 inches to be correct. I took a piece of 1/4 inch MDF, cut it to size and used some nails to stab into the Styrofoam. I have to say that - just now - it occurred to me that that MDF might swell up if it gets wet from the elements. I may need to find something else to make up that quarter inch ...or would a few coats of polyurethane do the trick?

My brother is getting me a small piece of Indiana limestone - an "Address Block" I believe he called it. He will have the year "2016" carved into the limestone and it will be placed in the void in the brickwork that my spacer will provide.

The biggest problem will be getting that "Address Block" from southern Indiana to Peachtree City, GA.

EDIT: I just reread the text from my brother and I need to remove 1/4-inch from the height of the Styrofoam block not add a 1/4-inch. That solves the MDF problem as it isn't needed. Now I just have to figure out how to accurately remove 1/4-inch over the length of the Styrofoam.

Top idea with the address block Scott. It will add a nice personal touch to your build.

Snow! OK not a lot but still snow. The mere mention of the word has been known to cause the entire population of Peachtree City, GA to set their hair on fire and drive at NASCAR speeds to the nearest Piggly Wiggly to buy milk, bread & toilet paper.
Ha!

20160123-04.jpg 20160123-05.jpg

As I was checking out the falling snow I noticed the Electrician's Van parked in front of the Lone Beech Garage. I walked out to the building and, sure enough, he was there dragging wires and setting electrical boxes.

Despite the strong wind blowing snow and such into the building, he was there pretty much all day. I think he enjoyed not having to listen to the din that the Framers produce when they are on the site.

20160123-06.jpg 20160123-07jpg.jpg

I spotted a few more Craigslist 50's-era Youngstown steel kitchen wall cabinets about 30 miles from my home. The seller had a sink cabinet and sink in addition to these beauties but I was only interested in the wall cabinets. I negotiated a price and brought them home.

Doug,

"Collector"

That has better ring to it than "Hoarder". Ha!

Actually, I think I'll be using all the cabinets that I've acquired for their intended use ...eventually. If the weather would cooperate maybe I could get them cleaned up and start painting ...but it is January.

Hoping for some progress this coming week but weather looks iffy again. It was beautiful today and I got a little work done but not as much as I hoped.

Best regards,

Scott

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Church this morning and a lengthy meeting afterwards kept me from taking full advantage - in terms of my project - of a beautifully clear winter day.

When the Garage Door fellows showed up a few weeks ago, they indicated that someone would need to install the wires that ran between the motors and the opener buttons. I said I would get that done.

I purchased 500 feet of bell wire a couple of weeks ago.

When I got started on this project this afternoon, my son & I moved some scaffolding that I have from my basement to the Lone Beech Garage.

Then I started drilling the holes needed into the framing and running the wires.

Unfortunately I was only able to complete dragging the wire from one door before we ran out of daylight.

Normally I could knock this out pretty quickly tomorrow morning but...
Tomorrow I have to drive into Atlanta and get a new Passport. This is a job requirement and in order to get it done - supposedly - in one day, I must present myself at the Regional Passport Office tomorrow morning at 9:00 am. I suspect I will be there all day waiting on this task to be accomplished.

The morning dawned bright, clear and chilly. I drove up to Atlanta to the Regional Passport Office. If you saw the movie Men In Black and recall the scene where Will Smith shows up at the MIB building for his interview; that's a lot like what my initial experience was this morning when I arrived at the building the passport office is in.

I gave my application to the nice lady behind the counter and returned home. I will pick up my passport in a couple of days.

When I returned to my home it was a zoo on the Lone Beech Garage's building site!

Nothing like a combination of decent weather & Christmas bills coming due to generate some real progress!

The Security sub was on site drilling holes and dragging low voltage wire & Ethernet cable everywhere! The Ethernet cable is for a CCTV system. Since the Mezzanine has no ability to see out except the window towards the rear of the property. I thought I needed to have the ability to see, from the Mezzanine, what's going on towards the front of the property and in the workshops.

Bricks!

The masons arrived and began laying brick for the wainscoting on the north side of the building. An attempt was made to explain the Styrofoam Address Block Spacer but neither of the gentlemen doing the masonry understood English.

One of the Framers spoke Spanish and I think we got the idea of the what the Styrofoam spacers was for. It should take the masons a couple of days to get to the area where that will be an issue. In the meantime, the Builder will be talking to their boss to attempt to insure the workers know what's going on.

I may try to get my wife to translate - she speaks Spanish - but she usually likes to keep it a secret from the workers that she understands what they're saying. She has learned some interesting things over the years by not revealing her abilities.

Ha!

While the rough plumbing was being set up, the boss plumber and myself discussed a few details regarding the finished plumbing. Type of Shower; location of any hose bibs, etc.
