Welcome to my garage build, The Loonie Bin.

Last year I knocked down an old 1920's summer cabin to build a new home. I managed to swing a 24x24 garage as well. Property is lakefront on a beautiful 800 acre lake in the Northwoods. We closed in February and now I'm making plans for finishing the garage. Here are some pictures of the construction.

House and garaged are complete. Garage is barebones, just stud walls, two windows that I saved from the old cabin, a man door and 8x16 garage door.

I was on a budget during the build and didn't have much to spare for the garage. I'm planning on insulating and heating the space, add overhead lighting, some workbenches on top of toolboxes or cabinets and storage for life vests, oars, fuel cans, water ski's. snow ski's, snow shoes. Going to park two vehicles in there when we move up here for good. I'm hoping to eventually build a seperate shop with lift and storage for the boats and other toys.

For your pleasure, Sunset at the Lake

Nice looking place!!!!

One question...with the height of the blocks on the garage, which look to be 4' from the floor to the top, any reason that you didn't go higher with the garage? You could have built 8' walls on top of the block for a future lift, or even put a partial loft for future storage.

Other than that, WELCOME to the site, and please post up some more pics of the garage, house, and surroundings.

The summer cabin has been in the family since the 70's. Two years ago, I stepped through the top of the 1920's septic system while preparing to insulate and re-side the cabin and decided it was time to start fresh. County wouldn't allow me to repair the septic, I would have had to move it and it's position would have a significant influence on any future improvements.

I talked to a half dozen builders before finding one that knew the building code and was able to get me permitted to build on the spot of the old building rather than 75ft back from the lake. Also the threat of even more restrictive building codes to take effect in January 2012 convinced me to build before the code changed.

Nice looking place!!!!

I wish I had the money at the time. My contractor gave me a great price on the garage in order to get the contract on the house. This was my first build experience and discovered early that any change order means more dollars. Only addtions to the contract I was able to make without really uping the price was the 8" garage door. Due to the pending code changes, I had to commit to building before I was financially ready, so was on a tight budget.

It is wonderful to spend my time making improvements rather than repairs.

Beautiful place!! Would love that view..till winter comes..HAHA. What lake and where, if you don't mind? I'm from Wonder Lake Ill...

This is Northern Wisconsin up near Minocqua, not far from the MI Upper Peninsula. I'm a cold weather guy. Rather be cold than hot. With that said, my retirement plans include plans to head south from Feb to May.

Wow, nice place!

Ocean waterfront views are okay... but I would definitely live on a lake before the ocean, just so beautiful and peaceful...

Just stumbled across this.. How are you still loving this place? My dream is to retire on a lake. Might even happen.

Still lovin it. Still working hard to move up there full time soon. It is so much nicer to work on improvements rather than repairs.

This summer's improvements in the garage include insulating, installing plywood for the walls, sealing the floor and installing jack shaft garage door opener.

Might get the ceiling installed this fall, we will see.
