I remember the first time geometry class made sense to me. It was with the Pythagorean theorem, I use it all the time with towers. Then it was basic trig, sin, cosine, and tangents are all my friends..........

Geometry class, 1974
Teacher always wore miniskirts...
(Think Sharon Stone in “Basic Instinct “)
I was laser focused on triangles hoping for a glimpse of “Fuzzy Math”.
Really enjoyed that class.

I’ve forgotten everything I learned surveying.

Except that a tripod is like a woman, ya always want to be between the legs.

I hate it when someone sets up the tripod that way, it seems so obvious that you would want the leg between yours while trying to deal with things. With towers you generally are looking up and down, so we use fancy LTUs instead of regular transits or theodolites. Mine have offset necks so you don’t have to........

Transom blocks are all epoxied and screwed into place.

Structurally, it a boat again!

All the final contouring/shaping of the blocks will be with planes, rasp, spokeshaves, and the Fein Multimaster.

If I screw up at this point, I just might lite it on fire:bounce:

Thanks Jim,

I did do a fair bit of shaping tonight.

Fine tuning the curves and contours.

So far, I’m pretty happy with them.

No need to start burning books yet!

Jim,

The old growth, clear, vertical grain, spar quality Sitka Spruce is wonderful material.

Wish I could afford to buy more!

I bought a bunch of it at Edensaw a few years ago, they had 4/4 rough random lengths priced really reasonable in a close-out pile. It wasn't all VG, but I was able to sort out the best of the lot.
Left it with a woodworking neighbor when we moved to AZ..

Bummer. You wouldn't believe how much lumber I left behind in WA. I used to grab any knot-free, tight-grain 2x4's I spotted while picking up lumber for jobs. Probably had several dozen 8'-12'ers. Along with the various cherry, maple, walnut, alder 8'+ pieces left from jobs.
I tried to get RIV over to the island to take stuff.

Too bad for me, I was moving too and in slash and burn mode.

I was giving wood away, and having lots of evenings around my fire pit.

My goal is to bring in only materials that are project specific. No more mass storage of anything I might find.

I like space more than extra stuff.

Then again, some stuff is too good to pass on!

I had the space. I hate tossing leftovers and cut-offs. So much of it gets used here and there. Hate cutting up a sheet of plywood for a 24"x18" piece. And lots of guys would ask if I had a piece of this or that, always seemed I did. Earned lots of favors.

It’s Super Bowl Sunday!

That must mean I’m in the shop, tinkering away.

Getting ready to lay up a laminated tiller handle for a buddies sailboat, and repairing an old paddle.

I’d be working on the boat, but I didn’t get my package delivered in time.
I really wish they could do a better job estimating delivery dates and tracking.

Got a good dog walk in too.

Hey Riv, same here!
Spent the day working on a table project of my own.
Old Oak Monastery table that has been in my wife's family for 70+ years. Somewhere along the way, someone cut it down, whitewashed it, and made a coffee table out of it; we inherited it when my FIL died. My wife wanted it raised back to table height- Had to extend the legs, added decorative iron bracing and refinished the top. I'll post pics but don't want to muddy up your thread.

This pic struck me funny.

I had a dingy that an oar came apart like that. Did a rush repair on the back of the boat wrapped it with a bit of blue tape to hold the glue.

Life happened and that tape was there for the duration.

I repaired a couple of canoe paddles much like you picture. Splits, little rot. I cut wood to fill the rot and glued up the splits and put on a BUNCH of coats of spar varnish. Only when I was done did I discover that the local store sells paddles for $15-25. I probably had 15-20 HOURS in each of them.
Oh well, it kept me out of the liquor store and I did learn a lot.

Riv, we did get hammered pretty good with snow around here. On the plus side you never have to worry about losing Ranger in a snowstorm, that is one big heap of black hair!

Not necessarily a cost effective venture, but I was bored.
The $20 paddles are more likely to delaminate than the higher quality makers.
But now I got a working paddle, and I didn’t have to go to the store!

Black hair with snowballs! Makes a hell of a mess in the shop.

Ranger is thinking, "Now THIS is what I'm talkin' about."

Yukon was in heaven whenever we got snow on Whidbey.

Hard to get Ranger to come inside. He doesn’t like the snowballs, but he loves sleeping in the snow.

Too much snow outside to do much, too cold to paint the fiberglass boat, and still waiting some copper nails and roves for the wooden boat.

I did pick up a 5/8-11 tap for the mounting bracket for the Gheenoe’s little Johnson.

Tap, clean, insert, repeat.

And Bobs your uncle
