I remember coming across this site years ago when I was in post secondary. I always dreamed of owning my own home with a garage to MAKE my own. My wife and I have recently ( April 2013 ) moved into our home located in Edmonton Alberta.

Last year was quite expensive ( move in costs and a wedding in Vegas ) so I didn't have much "play money" to spend on the garage. After working hard ( 2 jobs for 4 years ) and spending wisely, I am ready to slowly start my garage project.

So far, the garage is pretty bare. It has been drywalled, and taped (code here in Edmonton/Alberta). I have put up some temp shelving for storage to get things off the floor for the time being. I am looking for as many pointers, suggestions, etc on this project. I want to take my time, and do it RIGHT.

Her is what I am hoping for ( so far )
- 2 stage lighting ( flourescent as well as pot/can lights )
- two tone paint ( of course ) - green on the bottom, black stripe, and white on top
- Built in custom cabinets ( father in law is great at this )
- MAYBE just MAYBE do something with the floor - note sure what though
- Audio system - My mother in law gave me an old 5.1 system that I will use
- Mobile work bench on casters so I can still actually do some work in there
- Additional electrical - sub panel with 220 for a possible air compressor
- Antique posters/prints similar to the BMW M3 thread

I know this list will change over time, however I am ok with that. Anyways, here are a few pics of the garage and a few from my wedding in Vegas ( since I know you guys and gals love photos )

Thanks in advance!

Being that the weather has been getting better the past few months, I have been able to get some work done.

My father in law recently moved from his garage and is in process of finding a new facility. He is storing a lot of his tools in my garage for the time being. The only "catch" was that there wasn't 220v for his welder, saws etc... Not a bad catch as he wired a sub panel and 220v for me. Good stuff!

Here is the sub panel and outlet install that we did this weekend.

Next was fishing the wiring to where the overhead fluorescent light will be. This is one of two fluorescent lights that is part of my 2 stage lighting set up ( tubes and can/pot lights ).

IMG_4729-X2.jpg

I needed to add a few more outlets as the builder only put one on each wall - fools....

Next, was insulating around the sub panel

Once the sub panel was wired up, we boarded it back up.

If you were looking closely, you may have noticed an electrical box near the ceiling.... This is a little preview of what is going up there.....

It's moved but I'm not sure why your pictures aren't showing up. It appears that you have put IMG tags on attachments. I don't recall seeing that done before. :dunno:

Strange.....They worked before. What is the best way to put the photos on the post within the text - that way I can add a description to each photo.

Thanks

More Progress over the past few weeks.

I had both my Father and Father In-Law help with various parts of the build.

As previously mentioned, I said that I wanted two stage lighting - recessed lighting and tub lights. Here are a few pics of that process.

Once the lighting was done, it was on to the custom cabinets. Dale, my Father In-Law is absolutely fantastic at this. With help from my wife, the three of us made a lot of progress last weekend. Here are a few pics of what we did.

I'm glad you moved this thread to the Gallery, because I had never seen it until now. Very similar in many aspects to my own garage down here in Calgary. Your Father-in-law is the man! I will be watching your progress closely. Good luck!

I should have more photos up this weekend. I hope to finish the cabinets and prep for paint. Shortly after that I should be able to wire the projector.

Does anyone know of a good place to get large vintage posters?

In regards to the "stripe" for the paint work, I am thinking of using black vinyl however I am unsure what size to go with. I was thinking 4''.... any suggestions?

Photos of the progress this weekend.

We put the finishing caps/moldings on the edges of the structure. Once this was complete, we started on the doors, and shaped the edges with a router.

Now that most of the wood work is complete, I can move onto the "details". I need to figure out what I am going to do with the wires/cables for the stereo/AV system. I am thinking of running the wiring through the ceiling in the attic that way I can have a speaker on each side of the garage without having any wiring showing. Just need to find some speaker mounts to hold the speakers sideways.

Updates:

Here is some progress photos of the recent work over the past week or so.

Now that the structure and doors were built, it was time to start the finishing work. Did some putty work to get rid of the seams.

If you saw the prior "teaser" photos of a box, you may have noticed what it was. Here is another "teaser". Your probably going to figure it out pretty quick. Anyways, I found this Denon receiver. The best part - it has Bluetooth which allows me to wirelessly stream my music from my iPhone. Very cool.

Testing the connections/Bluetooth set up...

I did some additional electrical work to add a double outlet for the receiver, Xbox and Apple TV. I didn't want any ugly wiring visible so I ran everything through the walls/ceiling/attic. Speaker wire too...

Next was prime and paint work.

Once the backs/inside of the cabinet doors were painted and dried, it was time to paint the fronts.

Here is what the door hardware will look like once it is all mounted up.

Question: Do you have an insulated Garage door or have you added insulation to it? If so what kind did you go with?
thanks,

those cabinets are ****** beautiful!
superb work, cant wait to see this develop. I love that you've routed the return on the doors so they sit proud of the jambs. That really gives it some character.

Are you going to fit some soft-close whotsits in the frames to stop the doors from slamming?

cheers
nick

Welcome, from Fort Saskatchewan....

Wow, that is some seriously nice cabinet work in the garage!!!

The code recently changed to make an insulated and finished garage but just 6 years ago when our home was built they did not even insulate it! With a bedroom above the garage that was the first thing I did... Do you have a heater setup yet? If not this is the time to do that.

I am subscribing to this thread so I do not miss any updates! :3gears:

I like the garage door rail mounted to the cabinets. Thats pretty slick! You going to paint match it to the cabinets as well?

I am thinking of leaving it in its natural state to give it some contrast against the cabinets. Was thinking of possibly painting the rails black. Still trying to decide.

Question: Do you have an insulated Garage door or have you added insulation to it? If so what kind did you go with?
thanks,

It was already insulated by the builder. I am not sure of the brand. I'll look into it and let you know.
