Hmm that tool looks pretty awesome. Actually I need to also get a welder and learn how to efficiently use one. I need to do some more research on this forum or maybe make a thread specific to that.

I have a question for you guys. I want to start getting into welding and I know I will need an angle grinder/ cutoff wheel to cut things. Does this seem adequate?

http://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2780-20

My future use is I want to get a project car and it will more than likely have metal panels that need to be cut and new ones welded on. Does this seem like the type of tool that can do what I need (both cut through metal panels, and grind down welds) or do I need a different tool?

I just got the 2780 and have had a chance to use it in the shop. I'm satisfied w power and run time (but its still a cordless grinder) but the paddle switch *****. I like paddle switch grinders & even prefer them but this paddle is stupid. It hurts my forearm in a matter of minutes. I'm no stranger to grinding and have at least nine 4.5" grinders I use regularly. Get the slide switch Milwaukee, you'll thank me.

oh ok. I had no way of knowing that. I have the M18 line up too, and air...and electricity.

That grinder will get a lot done, and another kick *** tool is the 5-3/8" metal circular saw. I'm boatsiding my K5 soon, and I will cut the doors with that saw. http://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2682-20

So, I guess a big plasma cutter is out of the question too...:fawk:

I just used my V28 metal cutting saw yesterday. It's damn handy when you gotta have it. I see once again Milwaukee couldn't make up their mind on blade placement; my V28 is left blade. However to the OP, I wouldn't rely on this as your sole or primary method of cutting steel. The blades are expensive and easily damaged. A corded grinder is probably your least expensive, most durable, most versatile option to get started in metalworking.

How many of yall are using the rubber boot protectors on your fuel impacts? Worth the $25 from HD? I saw them and was curious how well it actually held up.

I had one, they work great. The tool can take a beating though, I doubt it's actually necessary, just for the prissy folk. ;)

Are the regular m18 cordless drills worth saving? I Got this one a little hot a few too many times. It still runs but sounds a little off and occasionally would lose torque. Not sure if new brushes would be it or not. Or if it would be worth it to have it refurbished.

If your drill is out of warranty, replacement brushes should not be too expensive or difficult to replace. If the brushes don't solve the problem then you probably have your answer. There was a hot deal on the HD clearance thread for a $60 Dewalt cordless drill kit.....check them out otherwise there is always some deal being posted.

I have a weird problem with M18 drill. Every so often, you pick it up, and it doesn't run. The light comes on, but nothing else. If you put a different battery on it, it runs fine. It does this maybe once in every 25 uses (I use mine every day building our house). It doesn't matter what the state of charge is, or which battery, or how long it has been since I've used it. I've drilled a hole, set it down, and picked it up 30 seconds later and it won't come on. Switch the battery, and it works every time. ?????

Sounds like it's running some version of Windows, and you're rebooting it.. :lol_hitti

Sounds like a loose connection either within the drill or between drill and batteries. Try blowing out the dust bunnies or debri out of the battery or drill electric contacts if still within the warranty period let them deal with it. Experienced some quality concerns with a recent M18 purchase. Quick exchange took care of the faulty charge light indicator on the M18 charger and strange noises from the M18 impact driver and impact wrench.

I've experienced something similar w my M12 2438 polisher. Sometimes it won't come on and the battery indicator lights flash in a 2x2 alternating pattern. Removing and reinstalling even the same battery clears it.

I think it's either a questionable connection to the battery or the Redlink dumbness, er I mean smartness trying to be too smart and throwing a false error. Kinda like how I can't put my seat belt on in my F350 on my dirt road: too sensitive.

If its really a problem for you, warranty it! You'll probably have it back within a week.

Time to get some tool organization! L-Boxxes perhaps? :bounce:

I haven't decided how I plan to organize. It probably won't be L-boxxes though as I don't have the space for them, and I've never been a fan of keeping tools in hard cases.

No M18 impact driver? Or chargers? :p

Plenty of chargers on hand, just didn't feel like unplugging them for the picture.

I actually sold my m18 impact driver that came in the kit. With the m12 fuel impact driver, and the fuel 3/8" impact, I didn't see it getting much use and justified picking up a couple other tools with the proceeds :bounce:

They will definitely be put to work. I had a handful of Dewalt 18V XRP Li-ion tools before this, and it was hard to start beating up these great looking tools, when I already had beat up tools that I could abuse. I sold off the Dewalt stuff to a buddy and can't wait to use the impacts this weekend. My car is getting a new CV axle and struts all around, so they should get some use for sure.

I'm not sure how long the warranty is. I've had this set for about 3-4 years, and it's always done it. Should have had it looked at right away. I've tried tapping on it, re-plugging the same battery, etc., and it doesn't help. Put on a different battery, and it works fine. I've noticed that the work light comes on for a second or two and then goes off. Something electronic, I guess, but I have no idea why changing the battery fixes it. Once you switch batteries and it works, you can then go right back to the same battery it had trouble with, and it works fine.

5 year warranty on the tool, either from purchase date (gotta provide your receipt) or date of manufacture encoded in the serial #. The former is a better deal for you, the latter is not a secret, links are out there to Milwaukee's site where they tell you which digits are the manufacture date.

If you're within warranty Milwaukee will pay shipping both ways.

Just be sure it isn't the same battery which instigates the problem each time. In that case it would likely be a battery issue and the warranty is 3 years.

Both my M12 and M18 brushless drills do/did that. It happens most when I'm feathering the trigger. I think it has to do with the controller not being well calibrated for very small inputs. You feather it too much and it just gives up, blinks at you, and goes into failsafe mode and locks you out of everything.

It hasn't gotten any more frequent with use, fortunately.

Resetting it by removing the battery hasn't failed yet, but yeah, it's annoying.

I never did either, I made my own sea of red in the bottom drawer of my Snap-On box, but then I got into Festool stuff, and all their tools come in Systainers.

The stack-ability is key into making the system work, they're all the same footprint and lock together. It lets you grab the tools you need, with all the accessories (drill bits, sandpaper, blades, etc), in one go. Really convenient once you get everything organized.

I wouldn't do Systainers again though, they're pricey! I think I've blown $500 in the past 3 months on plastic boxes. :lol_hitti

Today in the shop I was wanting a 9/16" nut driver but my Craftsman set doesn't go that big. Trolling HD tonight for deals I noticed the 4pc Milwaukee hollow shaft set which includes a 9/16". Sold! (and 10% off using gift card purchased online). The hex shanks for use with a wrench (in a pinch) aren't the worst idea, either.

If we were still doing new construction, one of those would be a must. Not very useful for the remodeling we do. How do you like it (once you get some bits)? BTW, HD has impact extensions for those in store, which I find odd since they don't stock that tool.

i assume all the 7/16 drive extensions are more for the (cant think of the name) big boring bits - 1.5 " and up.. those are all 7/16 hex drive, and so are the bosch ship auger bits they stock.. i have the lineman nut driver kit from greenlee to use for hardware, and broke down and bought an 11/16" "nail eater" auger bit from ideal, off some guy from ebay for $20 just so i have something at work in the meantime.. this item wont see much use.. but will make the days i can use it, easier.. im more excited about having it to bring home and use when i re-do the rear suspension on my f350 this spring.. lol i already have one, and will get 2 more 7/16 hex to 1/2 square drive adapters in different lenghts for that..

so far this vendor has smuggled in this fuel impact, a brand new corded electric makita chainsaw ( best electric you can buy IMO, aside from the discontinued milwaukee that i also have) company normally buys electric Husqvarnas but those things love to break. the next item on my list was a stanley or reliable 72" hydraulic tree trimming saw - ill have to buy this guy a bottle of something if he drops that off one day.. that will complete my desired hydraulic tool list, and go nicely with my hydraulic jackhammer, pump, tamper, impact, and pole puller...

will get back to you on that.. not back in work till tuesday, but i imagine its only an inch or so longer than the 1/2" square drive model.
Ok. My 1/2 dw hammerdrill once fitted with a speedbore will not fit have to go up in an angle and then straighten her out once I'm really into the joist.

Why some people are saying Milwaukee tools and/or electric tools, are overrated?

I'm very happy with it and the electric tools are really well made, powerfull and andurant.

because realistically, as long as you aren't using them as a discus or something, then most of the cordless tools will perform the same for 99% of people. the 1% might need whatever amount of extra run time or power. but the reason i think people are getting into milwaukee more now is the range of tools they are providing. makita still has more overall, but milwaukee is catering to the trades a lot more these days.

personally for me, the reason i went with them is the subcompact bandsaw, hackzall (best one handed design imho), the high torque impact, and the warranty
