First thing I thought of when reading through you list was the M12 hex screwdriver. I like my Bosch equivalent for small fasteners but now that I think about it the ratchet on your list along with various torx and allen sockets would probably be more useful overall. You wouldn't have the clutch but it would fit into much tighter spaces.

Speaking of tighter spaces, I think the 2nd gen M12 Fuel impact driver is over an inch shorter than the one in the kit you linked to above. I don't do a lot of automotive work but when I do it I always seem to come across a situation where more compact would be better. Not sure if it has been released yet or when it will be.

[EDIT] A lot of posters here love that M12 grinder/polisher for automotive work.

Is the 2nd gen currently available?

If your looking for automotive impacts, the m18 line may be a better option. I don't believe the m12 even comes as 1/2" option, and the m12 stuff is nowhere near as powerful as the m18 Fuel. The 12v stuff is good for being 12v but the m18 drill is like 3 or 4 times as powerful. Most of us wind up with both m12 and m18 platforms..

The m12 and m18 stick lights are both good.. if it were me, I'd get the core tools as 18v, and just get The ratchet as a 12v kit, maybe the m12 stick light to go with it..

It's hard to judge not having the things to use before hand, but don't expect the m12 stuff to be "almost" as strong, or 18v replacements.. they are not. The 12v impact wrench is good for small fasteners, but not something your gonna want to tr y and remove wheels with.

I have the m18 tools if he ever needs something stronger. He mostly works at home or a friends shop so stronger tools are always available. I was really looking at m12 because of the ratchets and the fact the tools are so much smaller and lighter than the m18 stuff. Besides auto work the drill and impact driver should be able to handle most of his household needs and if not my m18 tools are available.

i have bought a bunch of recon stuff from CPO over the years. a lot of it is not obviously different from non-refurbished stuff, except for the packaging.

i bought one of those refurbished lights last may 29th, according to the PDF receipt. it was in like new condition, and works great.

I’ve just recently bought the m18 searchlight, little usb rover pocket light and the mallet head lamp. I am impressed with all three. The searchlight puts out a lot of light and with the 9.0 battery will last all day. The rover usb is just a really handy and versatile light. The headlamp really is a simple and very bright light. I modified it a little by attaching the clip off of at tape measure which allows me to just clip it to whatever like the front of my hard hat. Very good head lamp in my opinion.

This doesn't include my car stuff which is a m12 2 speed screwdriver, 3/8" fuel impact wrench, 1/2" fuel impact wrench. I also have outdoor stuff. I really want the underhood light & the surge impact driver. Really impressed by the quality of the entire product line.

Anybody have the first gen rocket light and have issues getting the head to drop all the way below the guard? Mine seems to always sit 1/4" to 1/2" proud of the guard when I collapse it.

Try collapsing the masts in different orders and it usually goes all the way down. I forget which order I have to go in for it to work....

Got a chance to use my new M18 rover light for the past few weeks. I also have the M12 version which I love.

I found the M18 version to be more useful. I'm an electrician and if I'm installing lights in a dark stairwell, I can just set the M18 on one of the steps and you can adjust it to any angle very easily.

Or you can just set it on the ground and hit any part of a basement ceiling that can get quite dark with all the duct work and plumbing pipes and joists.

Overall, very happy with the M18 and it'll find a lot of use along side my M12 Rover.

Not yet, but if it is a common problem then I am sure I will run into it at some point. I have not used it out in the extreme cold though (as I am usually in hibernation in the wintertime).

Would you say it is worth having both the M12 and M18 versions?

I only have the M18 now and have been contemplating if the M12 would be a useful addition.

At first I did not like the M18 much, but it has begun to grow on me.

So the old man has every tool imaginable except modern power tools. He has a 20 year old makita kit that is shot and only has one working battery left. I’ve convinced other family members to work with me and get him a good m12 setup. Not really interested in any wood working tools. Looking for automotive tools. Any suggestions besides what I have listed below? What are the best places to get the following:

Fuel Impact driver and hammer drill or drill
Fuel 3/8 ratchet
Fuel impact- most of his impact sockets are 1/2”. Is the m12 worth it in 1/2” or should we go for the 3/8”
What’s the best m12 flashlight and is it worth it?
Hackzall
Will need a full bit kit which doesn’t have to be Milwaukee. Recommendations?

I have a feeling the Underhood light is too expensive. Any other lights I should look at?

Need charger and batteries. So one purchase will be a kit to get a charger and some batteries. Most likely the driver/drill combo. He doesn’t need a ton of batteries as these won’t be used everyday but will need at least two but prefer 3 or 4 to get him some bigger ones.

Any must have auto tools that I am missing?

Really wanted the fuel ratchet but I think this is hard to beat. Might be worth it to just get the standard ratchet and spend the extra money on more tools.

Alright so sisters are willing to put up to $250, Mom $200-$250, I can do $100-$200. What should I get him?

Really want m12 for him for various reasons. I have m18 if he ever needs anything stronger.

Definitely getting hammer drill and impact driver kit. Is 2nd gen available? Should be able to get the original 1/4” ratchet with this.
3/8” fuel ratchet

From there I can’t decide if I should get an impact gun, lighting, or a portable box/bag to keep it all together.

for working on motorcycles, i have M12 Fuel stuff:

2453 hex impact

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2453-20

[although i think this is newer (2553), and today i would buy the newer one.

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2553-20 ]

2403 drill driver

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2403-20

[ the hammer drill is 2404

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2404-20 ]

2402 hex screwdriver

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2402-20

2520 hackzall

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2520-20

i intend to add a 2454 3/8 impact when i find a good deal.

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2454-20

you could also add a vacuum 0850

https://www.milwaukeetool.com/power-tools/cordless/2454-20

i have one for in the house, and have mixed emotions about it. sometimes it is great, and sometimes i get annoyed at it. i think i would like it better if there was more space between the filter and housing.

if you wanna stay with M12, which is completely reasonable, i present this as a good place to start.

2nd Gen M12 Fuel is not out yet and its gonna cost a lot more I suspect, prolly $270+. Not sure if there will be any promos until Gen1 all gone. Though hopefully Gen2 comes with 6.0/3.0 batteries!

Some are really looking forward to Gen2, but Gen1 is so good I will not upgrade....until I get quadruple disc lol. I want them to make a M12 Surge!

Supposedly preorder Dec ship Jan, but almost everything this year has been delayed.

Actually Acme has it, 2598-22 is the hammer impact kit... Only $229! 2553 is new hex, 2503 is drill, 2504 is hammer drill. Wtf only 2.0/4.0 batteries...

Seems like the M12 soldering iron is back in stock on ebay and at home depot. It's gonna make my life a lot easier from the looks of it.

I'm waiting to pick up the Gen2 M12 Fuel impact driver only because I don't have an M12 impact yet. Haven't seen a reason to use M12 drills, not much smaller than M18, if at all.

CPO on eBay including a 10% off coupon PGIFT10. no idea how long it's active for but definitely the best deal around. I thought for a second about Ryobi but couldn't say no to the deal.

I was really excited about their new M12 soldering iron when I first saw it but the only review I've seen on it left me disappointed. Seems that it doesn't get very hot :(

Be glad you didn't get the Ryobi grinder. I had the craftsman c3 one and it was the same I think. It looks the same and unless they put a different motor in it it sucked. Light pressure and the disc would slow down.

I know its Milwaukee stuff but that knife is ridiculously overpriced as I feel almost all of Milwaukees knives are. On Milwaukees website it doesn't say where its made but I'm assuming China or best case Taiwan. You can get a comparable USA made knife with better steel than AUS-8 for less.

***my apologies Ive had a few drinks tonight*** :willy_nil

I have the 3.5" folding Hardline, and I couldn't bring myself to spend $79 on that either.. instead I found one on eBay without retail packing for $40. I don't know about this new one, but the other Hardline models are serious knives. The D2 steel blades are something you will find on some brands costing well over $100...
