I thought the Packout Dollies would come pre-assembled but guess that would not make sense. You have to install the wheel casters and the foot brake. When I heard about the foot brake I thought it locked the wheels, it doesn't, you step on it so the dolly doesn't move when loading or unloading, which is helpful. The foot break is mounted underneath with 2 big 1/4 pins like the snow blower shear pins and it has a big spring to keep it in position.
Lets start with what I like about them, ummm not much, the foot brake but I also dislike it so....
First off I got pissed when assembling them, there are 2 locking casters and 2 non-locking. I wanted to put the locking casters on the side instead of front or back. WTF you can not do that, the shafts for the casters are different sizes between the locking ones and non-locking. Therefore the holes they mount in are different sizes. Why oh why oh why! So you can only put the locking casters in the front and others in the back.
The casters are pretty heavy duty, at least 80-100lb casters, so why is the dolly only rated for 250lbs???
The caster/wheels are too big, the dolly then has about 4" of ground clearance, why does it need so much, the whole dolly then is so big that its almost a large box height off the ground. I would rather have something lower that doesn't add so much height to the stack.
I really do not like how there is about 1.5-2.5" of space all around, why isn't it the same profile as the large box, why does the platform need to take so much more space then all the boxes stacked. If you had 2 packout stacks with the roller side by side you can get them close where theres a tiny space between them, with the dollies front to back you would have 3"+ between them and side to side is prolly close to 5".
Then the foot brake sticks out even further than the dolly. Another thought on the foot brake, it forces you to always load/unload from the front. You could lock the casters, but it would be nice if the foot brake locked into position until you stepped on it again.
I really don't have anything great to say, sure it serves a purpose but it seems poorly thought out. Over the past few years I have questioned many of their designs, I have now completely lost faith in them to design anything well.
For $90 I was expecting something sooo much better. Definitely will not be buying any more, complete waste of money.
Also has anyone noticed the packout boxes are not level? I thought they would be level on the dolly, nope, the dolly is level. I dont know if this is intentional, the roller naturally is not level intentionally, but the rest of the boxes are slightly skewed forward.
Will post my very negative review tomorrow
