I think some of you might enjoy the following clip, I saw it tonight on my phone and it looked very interesting. Will $9000.00 Harbor Freight Tool Box compete with Snap on ?

Snap on will get them on colors and warranty i would guess. Still rhe icon is a very nice looking box. They will sell them probably a lot of them.

Valid point you have there. They will get a lot of the DIY crowd. And new mechanics just getting into the field. I would guess.

I dunno, what are these boxes doing that Homak, Masterforce or even the US general series two boxes arent? Other than being double or triple the price, of course.

Does Harbor Freight have a student discount program?

No, but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if that changed. It would probably have a minimal impact on sales though. Raggedy beard man stopped short of saying what most people know. At the end of the day, with or without coupon, its simply far too much money for a Chinese import.

I also think the bounce back on the drawers and that clanging drawer lid reflect the fact that it really isn't a 9, or even a 6k setup. That cabinet should be 2G, max.

Agreed. I literally said out loud at the end there, it's clear HF can't hit the little details. And that's what separates a 5k+ box from a US general...let alone a $9k+++ from a $4k online offering. :dunno:

Failure out of box is not acceptable, IMO.

All very good points from everyone but you put it out there and some will buy it. I myself have a triple bay matco box i have had for years. Dont see my self selling it to buy an ICON but the fact of the matter remains some will buy some wont. That is fact lol

I’ve been in twice just to get the feel of it, (56” w hutch and locker) and I have to disagree, this box is quite a bit above the snap on equivalent, the KRL series. Every thing about it feels better, looks ever bit as nice, comparable in weight, and rated higher or weight. Colors may be a limiting factor, at least custom colors, but the initial colors are pretty sweet. All @ about 33% less money, and 0% financing coming in a few months, compare that to the 20%+ you used to seeing. Now if you wanna compare it to the EPIQ series, no it’s not even close. But you can get the whole setup for $3000 less than just the EPIQ roll cab. I believe it’s been made very clear that it wasn’t meant to compare to the EPIQ. oh yea, it doesn’t come with Bluetooth remote locks either. I honestly believe it’s a solid box, and will fit into its price category very well. Just out of reach for broke guys like me, and no where good enough for those that live for truck day.

What harbor freight has failed to see is that $9k is too much mo Wu for most people. The tool truck drivers can offer a price for your old box, the give cheap weekly payments on something you could never afford outright. That is actually what people want. I don’t see those flying off the shelves, I would buy an Extreme or some other known quantity before buying harbor freight, they can’t seem to keep any consistency and it would be like buying a Saab, you might be able to get parts later, or you might not.

What bothers me is their always copying someone else. Mac, matco, dewalt, craftsman, cornwell, etc all make boxes that dont look like snap-on's

Great make a box and sell against the competition but dont steal their design.

I'm not exactly seeing where Icon is stealing anything from Snap-On. It seems everyone (Matco, Cornwall etc) sells mix and match pieces like hutches, overheads and side cabinets. Icon may be one of the first that is selling directly to public. (I have no access to any tool truck brands for instance, and i don't count Snap-On web site)

So far i haven't seen anyone spend their own money and buy an Icon box and provide a review as to how much it cost or what the quality is like. Everything has been giveaways to YouTube "influencers" so far.

That's a lot of money for something that will almost certainly not have parts available down the road. Snap-on supports their product pretty much forever. HF not so much. I would definitely prefer used Snap-on but I understand the people who only see shiny new.

Yes, the slots, the shelf, can rack, screwdriver rack, the gas struts and the linkage, the recessed pockets to mount hutch to box, are all snap-on design. In the power drawer the brackets and holsters for the power tools are identical to snap-on . So yes they copied some one elses design

Maybe I'm naive (more than maybe), but what design aspects are we talking about here? A toolbox isn't an overly complicated affair, and all of the Harbor Freight offerings I've seen visually look pretty close to the other toolboxes I've seen, just with a different layout (cue "he's never seen a SO box"). There's drawers of varying widths/heights, and they're typically between 18"-30" deep.

I do vaguely wish that toolbox manufacturers would cut it out with the massive deep/wide drawer at the bottom. My home box has a huge area that doesn't really have a home, but I don't have quite enough drawers that are tall enough to fit my 1/2" drive deep sockets standing up.

Personally I won't be buying a $9000 toolbox regardless (Most of my vehicles have cost less :shocking:) but I'm not the target market here. I'd still love to firsthand see the ICON boxes, I'd happily consider a US General box if I were in need of another. ICON, on the other hand, seem to be targeting the prosumer (at a minimum), and perhaps with a coupon (20% off of 9k is 7.2k) but time will tell.

The fear of the Icon line succeeding is palpable.

Which doesn't make any sense. Even if the truck brand box is significantly better the additional competition in the space should help keep a lid on prices. Everyone should cheer that.

Here's what I find funny. On their website they clearly show a 56" top and bottom box with an overhead locker mounted to it. How are you supposed to use the top of the 56" box and the locker together?

That is a chuckle.
I am sure if I loaded that toolbox the way I load my Snap On I would have the same failure rate of all my non Snap On boxes that have been trashed.
I have stood on my loaded drawer and it did not bend and flex like this review

I am sure a few years down the road that box will be good for a laugh

I think the thought that ICON is going to replace SO or any other brand is laughable. The Icon vs SO bickering has become so overdone its not even entertaining at this point. It reminds me of a presidential debate but all the points are the same. The thing I find really laughable is how many people are going to bat for ICON because they looked at the specs and johnny jackoff on youtube said they were good tools. Seems foolish to me but what do I know, I'm just some guy.

What are you finding difficult to understand?

Did some re examination of the pictures. Does the top of the box not hinge open at all like most other boxes?

If you're talking the hutch, it does appear that it has a door, and that said door stows into the top inside of the hutch, not above the hutch, so the storage locker can bolt to the top of the hutch without issue, as pictured.

If you're talking the top chest, I have not seen any pictures of a 56" bottom chest/top chest/storage locker, but I don't see that as an issue either, because the top chest they show on the website doesn't appear to have a flip-up top, it just has normal style drawers.

Harbor Freight it trying to go legit, huh? I'm not betting it will be successful. We shall see.

The thread title is laughable. Most of the people I know just buy a bottom box that'll fit all of their tools. So, with coupons you've talking $3,200 for the 56" and $4k for the 73". That's the real pricing at launch.

That IMO seems reasonable if they're really comparable to Snap-on. New vs used.

Am I a potential buyer? No, but I wasn't a potential used $3k-$4k Snap-on buyer either.

HF seems to be successful importing cheap stuff only for the US market with basically no warranty or parts available beside the standard exchange hand tool warranty.

Somehow Napa Canada can bring in Carlyle Platinum boxes 30" x 60" boxes and sell them for $2000 usd regular price. with no nonsense like HF and their coupons

Canadian Tire can bring in cordless tools that have 3 and 5 year warranty vs. HF Hercules with a 90 day warranty and the line is now discontinued to be replaced with another version

When a tool company brings in special boxed sets like ICON not regular sets that have singles available. They are available in every store in that chain. Cornwell has more tool trucks in Washington state than HF has stores selling ICON

Harbor Freight is good entertainment not to be taken too seriously
