did you allow space under the roof or is the insulation pressed tight against the roof sheeting? I'm not sure would this cause a condensation/mold issue? just askin.

I have always heard leave an 1" airpocket under the sheething. but how would it be any different than how we do walls?

yes this is what you are supposed to do... no that is not what I did

there is a 1" gap at the bottom and top of each sheet as mounted in place, the actual corners at the bottom of the roof have no insulation at all... and there is nothing packed into the eaves but air... we figured this should be sufficient, and since we arent sealing the fiberglass behind wallboard/plywood or anything like that so we figured it should breath enough.

There has never been any sort of mold/mildew problem in the garage, no water leaks of any kind, and the only wood rot ever experienced was the corner posts at the ground... and they were replaced. Also the boards across the roof are pretty dry... they would likely soak up the moisture before the fiberglass IMO.

Because of those factors I felt relatively safe with skipping the 1" air behind the fiberglass... if I do have a problem it will come to bite me in the *** in a couple of years... and by then it shouldnt be much a problem.

This is likely a dumb question, but I'm new here so I'll fire away.

Something I've always wondered - are you not concerned about a single motorized garage door with no windows or man door? I mean if your garage door craps out on you.

I have a single motorized garage door and a big toolbox in-front of my man door. Every time I look at the toolbox I think I should move it.

not really... I have a catch on the motor's track that can disengage the door from the motor... the insulated door doesn't weigh a whole heck of a lot... I've tried and I can actually lift it pretty easily.

I was more concerned about vandals/thieves/jealous types in my area than about windows and a man door. My Audi is also most decidedly out of place in this neighborhood... visualize a brand new Rolls Royce in the 'burbs and you'll get an idea.

spent the day organizing the **** left over, and putting stuff into place so we could get the cars into the garage because street parking ban begins tonight!

threw my tire racks up on the wall today:

built that bench out of the butcher block... and already its covered in my wood scraps:

and here's a picture of the cars sitting in the garage for the winter:

So how are you going to get INTO the garage when the opener quits working?

there is a cable attached to the safety release that is attached to a keyed lock accessable on the front of the door. When you unlock the lock it comes out of the door so you can tug it to trip the catch and disengage it from the motor.

Did you get those wheels and covers from Achtuning? How are you liking your audi by the way? Is that an S5? Sorry, I don't know the newer VAG cars as well as the old stuff.

Yes the covers came from Achtuning... I went to buy another set of them the other day and found out they no longer have them for sale and may not be having anymore made... my OCD wants me to have matching covers for all my tires lol!

you were close... A5 S-line... other than not having a V8 under the hood (V6 in mine), and not having the chrome mirror caps you'd be hard pressed to tell them apart side by side since i've done all sorts of mods to mine.

LOVE IT... currently having feelings of withdrawal and depression from having to put away for the season.

Looks like a big improvement, the only thing I would change is that exposed kraft face insulation all it takes is one spark.
From owenscorning.com:
Do not leave faced insulation exposed. The facings on kraft-faced insulation will burn and must be installed in substantial contact with an approved interior finish as soon as the insulation has been installed. Facing must be installed in substantial contact with an approved ceiling, floor or wall material. Keep open flame and other heat sources away from facing.

its hung up there pretty well with angle... the opener weighs approximately 26 pounds... i've hung my 350lb body from the metal... it's not going anywhere.

Any plans for paint?

Or maybe stain...that could look cool to have color and the grain show.

walls are going to be painted white and then the plan is to have a graffiti artist I know do a 3 wall mural... thanks to the cold and the fact the cars are in the garage for the season this will be done in the spring... i'll make sure to post lots of pictures and maybe a video.

From owenscorning.com:

the only place the kraft face insulation is exposed is on the roof insulation, and sometime next year when I come up with more $$$ its going to be covered by foamboard

I haven't done any grinding/cutting of metal in there yet, and I don't really have any sources of exposed flame that would be problematic.

Awesome job. I have a couple local Graffiti guys that have been waiting the green light on my garage also. I feel its art and can't wait to get it done, weather kind got me with my pants down. I only have a single 20a circuit so it looks like if I wanna weld this winter its expensive extension cord for me lol.

The transformation looks terrific. Saving an old building always grabs my attention more than building a new one. Well, almost always.

Since you used kraft faced insulation for the roof, I don't think you want to add foam board on top of it, since that will give you two vapor barriers right on top of the other. But, maybe you are willing to take the risk, or maybe someone more knowledgable will say it isn't a problem. It's just what I have gathered from my own research, which might be flawed.

On the agenda for this week:
1) Finish putting up plywood...

I decided to use BC sanded 4'x8' plywood for walls instead of drywall for a couple reasons... but primarily because i'm a klutz who would wind up with multiple holes in walls lol. I went with BC grade because its going to be painted as is and maybe covered in tile later... so no need for anything better.

What size thickness did you use and about how many sheets did you use and cost.

yeah having grown up in Wash DC I got used to the whole graffiti as art culture... not a lot of people are really into it up here in rural Maine... trying to bring a taste of home to the garage with some spray art.

Al, I think you did a great job on bring back the garage to a useable condition!
Looks Great!

thanks!

hrm... a lot of the reading I did showed that as long as there was some sort of air gap between the layers it wouldnt be an issue... seeing as i've got 1x3 strapping in strips across the top of the kraft faced R-19 I figured the inch air gap it would create between the R-19 and some R-10 pink foamboard would be sufficient.

its 11/32" B/C sanded plywood in 4x8' sheets from home despot... paid $16 per sheet... used approx 16 sheets at 5 per wall, and one sheet split in half for either side of the garage door on that wall.

well i've been slacking... we didn't get around to doing any painting until about a week ago. Too busy doing other things in the nice weather...

we started by painting the plywood walls with 2 coats of Killz latex... this should help to kill/prevent mold from any moisture present in the garage.

20110802164946815.jpg

then we went to lowe's to get some spraypaint for my graffiti artist:

now this is the part that I know not all of you are going to appreciate... but growing up in DC, I got used to it... and it reminds me of home:

beginning the pieces:

where we left it as of last night:

DC natives will recognize the homage to a legend of graffiti on my wall.

I was diggin it up until the Gansta part. To each His own.:)
A well reinforced Man door with security would make it much more usable,IMO.
I have closed circuit, heavy chains, lots of lights and a .44 Magnum.
Keep the pics coming!

I'm digging the art. Raised in suburbs of Philly but loved travelling to city or taking Amtrak to DC or New York and viewing street artists work.

I think you knocked it out of the park.

If graffitti artists would only place their art on their personal property and not others property (without permission)..

I like the art in your garage.
