It looks like home! What a great execution of a brilliant concept, and done cash wise inexpensively (Not skimping on the brain power and labor). Your shop is the kind of place, when you walk in looks .... cool. (Can't find the right words to describe that intangible sense of professionalism and comfort.)

And from now on leave the levitation to David Copperfield.

Oh and speaking of copper, I gotta ask about progress on the copper urinal?:lol_hitti

25 cent tour? Shoot...what happened to the 5 cent tour? Inflation I guess.

Nice work man. It really looks nice....somewhere you would want to go and work in. So nice, in fact, I'm gonna cruise back out and work on the garage in the 95 degree heat cause now I'm fired up!

Thanks Mike, yer makin' me blush:p.

And here I thought I'd outlasted that copper urinal stuff. You been talkin' to Ompha?

Yeah, inflation.......and still cheap! Thanks Fergus.........now don't get a heat stroke or anything. I'd feel responsible. It's all the way up to 58° here.

Man that really looks great!

Thanks Girl............sounds like you may be getting back to work on your place. Lookin' forward to that:).

Progress begets progress I guess................

I got tired of tripping over the ductwork that I removed from the other building so no better time than the present to put it in the air:).

First, I lagged a couple of 2x4's into the purlins. The hood is not very heavy so this should be fine. I used the floor as a benchmark and a laser to find my hanger locations. The 2x4 on the wall is just to support the back temporarily.

001.jpg

Hood installed. This was relatively easy.

002-1.jpg

Then the fan was installed on some 2x4 brackets lagged into the framing. I was going to hang this on rods also but there was no way I could get it up there by myself. As it was it, was a struckin' fuggle.

DSCN0223.jpg

Ductwork tied together. I figured out all dimensions on paper prior to hanging anything. And it all lined up!!!!

DSCN0224.jpg

Hacked a hole in the wall........

DSCN0238.jpg

Inside portion is complete...
DSCN0241.jpg

I had to mount the back draft damper on the outside of the wall because there just wasn't room for it to go in the wall without doing a bunch of hacking. The fan is running in this pic as you can see the bdd is open.

DSCN0239.jpg

Finally, the hood is installed...

Wow, nice hood...strucking fuggle eh? What are you going to do under that there hood?

Shaun

My thoughts too. Whatever smoke/undesirable stuff is under that hood, it won't be hanging around for long by the looks of that hummer. Love the "strucking fuggle" term. Think I've found my new favorite!

Heh heh...........Glad I could help increase your vocabulary!

The area under that hood will be for welding. I still need to find a piece of plate for a table top and protect the surrounding areas.

Removing welding fumes? Psshhh lightweight.

Heh Just kidding. It's worthwhile. Depending on how good I was about keeping the fan on when I'm welding, I either feel great or sinuses get wound up.

Did you need to do anything on the inside of the stud cavity of the pass through to keep any weather or bugs out?

I've inhaled enough fumes in my lifetime so I thought I'd try and mitigate it somewhat this time around. Better late than never, right?:D

I lined the inside of that hole in the wall before I finished. As far as weather, the exterior hood should keep it out. Bugs? The hood has ½" bird screen for the really big bugs and I think I'll back it up with bug screen. It's in it's own frame so it's easily removable for cleaning.

Nice job on that exhaust fan! Now all it needs (to continue your color palate), is some RED RACING STRIPES, or maybe even a FLAME JOB done around the periphery of the hood bottom. I mean, jeez, now that you've got all the slick interior siding done and you've got all this extra time on your hands; why not? Of course, if you could enthrall us all with the crafting of the

COPPER URINAL
we'd certainly understand the lack of finishing paint touches to the exhaust system.

Really, you do great work! I'd love to find a score like that for my own shop; I keep looking, but there's not much CL activity here locally. One thing I thought would be good for an exhaust set-up for myself would be to also punch a bench top height hole in the wall near the welding table to provide an outside air source so that the exhaust fan has an easier draw and not depend on draft leaks in the building. Do you think this idea has any merit?:dunno:

Ah man, I thought I'd ditched you !!!

Seriously, thanks for the nice comments and for adding a touch of humor to this thread.

A source of make-up air for the exhaust fan is definitely a good idea. When I had it in the little building I had to crack the door to make it work right. I doubt there would be enough oomph to open a back draft damper mounted in the wall so maybe just some sort of door you could close when not in use.

I've had this fan for about 20 years. It was a "take out" from a job we did at a shop I worked at. The boss gifted it to me. Not sure of the cfm but its a double squirrel cage with two 10" wheels so it moves a fair amount of air.

Maybe check with some HVAC shops to see if they have anything laying around.

Any concern of it removing shielding gas from the area you're trying to lay a bead on?

Sorta like trying to MIG weld in the wind.

That hood looks great! Very industrial.

Isn't it just a wonderful day when things line up just right? Gotta love that.

Oh and I think some excited person in this thread was making a worthwhile suggestion...

Mastermind, Copper urinals are hard to find in these parts. Might have to find someone very talented to whip one up... Only if we know someone like that...

Congrats on the 25 cent tour, Paul. The shop really looks awesome. I read where each load of that fencing came in, was pressure cleaned and then cut and hung. It sure is great to see the final results of all that hard work. I've heard of a fence in my area ready to be replaced, but I am trying to hold off the TB Urge to ask for the discards.

That hood and fan looks perfect there, except maybe the color accents O mentioned. Looks like it was meant to be mounted there.

I agree with Shaun, have a cold one and take some time to relax a little.

Just for the sake of 'inspiration'! (wink-wink-nudge-nudge)

If we called it a 'Pissoir', would that encourage you to take up the mallet and lead bag? Don't mind my little jabs TB66; I'm just monkeying around. :monkey_pi

Wow Mastermind, thanks for putting up with me for the whole trip! It's been a fun ride. Looonnng, but worth it.

Copper urinal?? Just send me a large deposit and I'll get right on it. Delivery date would be a moving target............:lol_hitti

Thanks a bunch Jeff!! I can't believe it took almost a year but I'm glad I did it! I owe it to (blame it on) this dang forum. A compliment from an architect is a compliment indeed! Thanks again.

I am taking a break for a while which means catching up on yardwork, house work AND I've been devoting some quality time to the Chevy II.

Just for the sake of 'inspiration'! (wink-wink-nudge-nudge)

Mind?? No way man, I always look forward to what comes from your twisted mind....................

You do have me thinking about flames though. I do have an airbrush and some striping supplies, hmmm.............................

I just took the 25 cent tour.
The wood fence walls are very warm and inviting,
the red and black theme stands out very macho like.
and the shot I like most is the step back and look at the kitchen cabinets
and peg board just great.
You are pushing me into a work shop due over of my own.

Thanks for sharing this fabulious place and your insites
Just amazing

The place looks great Paul!! You've done a great job and as has been 2nd'd, 3rd'd and maybe 4th'd....you deserve to sit back, have a cold one to enjoy it!! Sounds like you're getting some time in on the Chevy II, so you're going to see the fruits of your labor paying off in a great shop to work in. You've been an inspiration to quite a few people and I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to bring us all along for the ride! And don't let that Chevy take time away from the copper unrinal project you've been promising for so long:willy_nil

Keep up the great work and keep us posted on continuing projects.....I don't think "Done" is a word used too much around here. So even though you've "Done" a great job so far, we'll be looking for more cool add-ons like the welding exhaust hood....that turned out great and I'm sure your lungs will thank you for it.

Great job man!! Chris

TB66, enjoy your well-deserved brew(s), and I raise a toast to you(se); as they say in New Joisey!

Now, if you don't quite feel like tackling the flame job on the exhaust hood, you can always pop it off the wall and cart it up to Snohomish to let this guy have at it. Just be sure to take your checkbook along; he's been featured on many car shows and I'm quite sure he doesn't work cheap. Hey, maybe you could work a barter deal with him - a 'True Fire' flame job for a handcrafted copper urinal! lol

Thanks Speed!! Done?? Hahaha. Still a looong way to go. Roof insulation, welding table, HEAT, etc., etc. The car needs a little attention now. It's been sitting way too long!

I picked up a new occupant for the garage today. From what I've found it appears to be mid 50's (?). It seems to work perfectly, just needs some cosmetic attention. I'll check to see if it needs any electrical attention. It's still got the two prong plug.

After that it'll be clean, paint, polish and drill some holes. This will be my every day drill press.

That press looks sweet TB!

What are the paint plans - try to match it or give it the red/black treatment?
(I don't mean to offend the diehard vintage C'man guys with the red/black comment ;))

congrats on the find, that press when restored should make an excellent addition to the "No So Pedestrian Garage" (Heck it already fits in)

Thanks Shopnut, the plan is to make it as close to original as possible. I think I've had about enough red and black:D.

Thanks, I gotta spiff it up a bit just for fun. Been pretty busy with the nice weather doin' stuff around the property, on the house etc. It's nice to get back and do something garage related.

Here is a walk through of the restoration of a Cman drill press like yours

http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=146523&highlight=craftsman+drill+press

Yeah man, I read through that one a little while back and then again over at OWWM. That thing is a masterpiece! This one won't be quite that nice.

That drill press will be a great addition to any garage. Glad you have the opportunity to save it and keep it running. There are plenty of experts on Vintage Craftsman tools that can give pointers and electrical advice. But that restoration by jtbinvalrico seems like the place to start. (Ironically, he is a few miles from me.)

Beautiful work Mike!

Tinbender........ A great find and look forward to see your restoration.

Hope you are having fun.

Ody.

I would love to claim that as mine, but it ain't, just a great step by step restoration for a cman dp.

Haha, thanks Rex!! Let's don't start on that copper urinal stuff:D.

Someday. Start now!! At the start I only had enough money to get the poles in, the roof on and the slab down. Then it was just when I had a few bucks, which wasn't very often lol. All in all, about 8 years from that start to what you see now. That same amount of time would have passed no matter what. AND. It ain't done yet but it's mighty close. Just some insulation at the roof and some form of heat. I intend to live forever so no hurry.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving the kind words!!
