Just found this thread. What a great shop! I love the way you are using old materials and being creative with the space. Like your cabinets...stock ugly....paint them and they look great! Saving a lot of money and adding way more character to the shop. Giving me some great ideas! Also, very interesting how it was build compared to how they build them here in Spokane Wa....wish I could live there right now..burr! Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the kind words kippieland!! I wanted it to look more like a stick frame which is probably what I would've built if I could have afforded to get it up and closed in right away. Now that it's almost done I'm glad I did it this way.

I haven't been to Spokane in a couple of decades. I'll get over there for sure when I get the car done for the Goodguys deal.

Thanks mayhemman!! Progress is about to resume. We have had company for the holidays so it's been pretty busy here. It was really nice to spend some dedicated family time though.

Wednesday I pick up my CL new old Craftsman tool box and then I'll be into some pegboard for behind my bench, more insulation etc. I think my barn board guy flaked on me.

A LITTLE PROGRESS

Not a lot but every little bit helps. Picked up a sheet of pegboard yesterday, cut it to size and threw a little paint on it. The boards in the background are some 1x2's to mount it on and some 1x2 MDF for trim.

Pegboard up.

MDF cut, drilled and "eyeball" countersunk, then painted and screwed in place.

Then I hung a few things on it just for fun. I'm not sure what all I'll end up putting on it. The stuff on the end (levels, squares etc.) will stay there. And it looks like I need to move the lights out a ways.

It looks to me that you need to move the lights to the bottom of the cabinets and as far out as possible...

Other than that.... It looks good.

What sizes screws did you use for the trim on the peg board? I definitely doing that to my pegboard....gives it a nice classy/finished style. Looks great....I'm going to follow you from know on...it gives me great ideas for my shop!

Maybe that will motivate me to get out there and finish up the trim on my one lonely peg/slat board

Those screws are just 2 1/2" deck screws I had layin' around. It was something I decided to do when I was at HD. Seemed like it would look more finished with some trim and mdf is pretty cheap.

First, I screwed some 1x2's to the studs then the pegboard to the 1x2's then the trim through everything. If you look at my "framing" you'll see the my intermediate backing is installed "flat". This gives me room for more than one screw. I would think that if you get your 1x2 backing secure, then you could just screw everything to that and it won't go anywhere.

There are no dumb questions.

They are pretty nice with two outlets on each one also. I think there are pictures of them on the cabinets in my build picture. I went and got my "new" tool box today. It's in decent shape. A couple dings in the top and some surface rust. Also, a lot of grime.

I'm going to work on making it look a lot nicer but only as much as I can without screwing up the originality. Some of the brown looking stuff in the pics is just grime and some is surface rust. I think I can make it look pretty good with some effort. Should be fun.

The crown logo will get restored to as new condition.

What has worked well for me is the swirl remover stuff that I'm sure you could get at any auto parts store.

I've been doing mine by hand, but I'm sure more advanced people out there would probably use some sort of electric hand held buffer

A careful razor (after initial polish) takes care of the splatter or junk that won't come off via polishing.

I was the "more advanced people(person) out there would probably use some sort of electric hand held buffer" (lol), who tossed out the idea of using a 1/2 Q-tip & Dremel tool to possibly clean/polish nooks and crannies. Not owning a Dremel, I thought someone reading RL's thread might have tried it and could comment on the idea.

I do like the lights you have, but maybe they could be used as 'wall wash' lighting for some of that beautiful wood paneling you've re-purposed. Another thought is to use them to highlight that beautiful copper urinal your going to fabricate someday! LOL

Thanks Omphalo-----!! The Q-tip idea sounds ok but I don't know how it would hold up to 18K rpm!! Seriously, you can run it much slower but those things aren't too sturdy. I have a couple of Dremels so I'll try it just for you. At any rate, the more I've gotten into playing with the toolbox the more I think a repaint is in order. The surface is pretty bad. A lot worse than Red Leader's.

Ok, after looking a little closer I decided to repaint the Craftsman box. It was a little too far gone to shine up.

Sooo.....I drilled all the rivets out, removed the handles and stripped it. I used Hammerite gray and it's a pretty good likeness of the original color. So far I've got the drawers done. The box is in primer but it's gotten a little too cold for painting. The drawers are small enough that I could set them up under a dual halogen light stand and get them warm.

At first I reattached the drawer handles with 10-24 machine screws but it didn't look quite right to me. So I went down to Ace and poked around the hardware department and found some rivets. Much better.

The end handles and the latch were pretty ugly so I used my buffing wheels and some compound to shine them up (I did the same to the drawer handles). They've got some pitting that I can't get rid of but look a lot better. The one on the right hasn't been done yet.

Thanks!! I believe they were called tubular rivets. They are hollow in the middle. I just laid the head on a dolly and smacked 'em with hammer 'til they were tight.

I like the look of your under-cabinet lights painted black like that, but I'm glad to hear you may be changing them (nice offer by Nighttrain, BTW!). With the pegboard there, I could foresee you banging/dinging them all the time grabbing tools. Some low profile units seem like they would function much better in a working shop.

Anyway, keep up the good work and have a great 2012!

I have a sack of those clippy things, I just don't know exactly what I'm gonna hang there yet. Once the lights are changed I'll get a better idea.

I really liked the lights when I put them up but after the pegboard was up I could see they wouldn't work.

I took the easy way out, diassembled and repainted the tool box. I stole the liners out of the Homack and recut them to fit and filled it up.

The Craftsman badge was a little beat up but I think it came out ok. I masked the middle so I could paint the outer part. Actually, I masked the whole thing then cut it and peeled the outside off.

After a couple failed attempts to paint the letters red with One Shot I cleaned it off with laquer thinner and started over. Then I just 'colored' the letters with a red marker.

Here it is all together with the handles and the badge riveted back on.

I also found some casters at HD that claim to be for the Rigid saw stand so I got them and put them on the Delta. I got tired of draggin' it when I wanted to move it. Much better and they seem to lock well.

This week I'm gonna get off my wallet and order bearings for the saw motor and the bandsaw shafts. Funny thing, the motor bearings and the band saw bearings are indentical. Then......I will need to build a stand for the band saw. It's either gonna be wood or I'll have to get what I need to get the welder going. Life's expensive!

That toolbox really looks great. . If you had not mentioned the drawers were repainted, I would have thought you spent hours polishing them like RL did.

I started polishing up that box but there were a lot of places where the paint was just gone and surface rust. RL has a much nice one to start with.
