Handle doesn't seem like it's been cut down....very end of it looks o/g....with an 1/8" deep hole in the center, about 3/32" round. I read EVERY thread here, spent three hours-plus on Google and Etsy and Ebay and even posted a bunch of pics up on that F/Book 'Vintage Tools---b, s & t page....and got nuttin'. Pretty strange, doncha think?.....

If 3bay hasn't seen it, it's is odd. I am guessing a contract production for a specific function on a machine. With the drive size being off it seems to be the logical answer. I think a company by the name of Lowell has odd drive sizes such as yours. Might be worth a shot to check into them if you haven't already.

Because they make direct drive ratchets, no sockets, and the shape of the head is reminiscent of Lowell. Although I've never seen a selector like that. But then again, my Lowell ratchets are much older. Good lead!

I was going to say 'See the Index in the Sticky,' but I just checked and I never put Lowell on the list. Lowell ratchets thread linked here.

I have never held a Lowell ratchet. I see them pop up on eBay and some are brutes.

I'm starting to think that the big clue here is the 'hole' size.....of 1 & a sixteenth inches. I'm no expert on these olde goodies but that size just seems to be.....a bit different than what I would have expected. One inch, yes, one and an an eighth inches, yes....but this? Hmmmmm....

I don't even know of 1-1/8" drive but I can tell you that 1-1/16" was a size of a 4 and 8pt sockets. 1-1/8" was not. It maybe for a direct drive fastner application vs socket

Lowell specialized in female reversible ratchets with any size square openings the customer wanted. The openings were not drive sizes, they were service openings - meant to turn big fasteners. No sockets involved. During WWII, for example, they made female reversible ratchets with 25/32", 1", 1-1/8", 1-1/2" and 1-7/16" square openings.

Post a photo of the marking you were describing.

Morning, Folks....kwik tourist question for y'all. Anyone able to shed any light on who made this olde gal? Can't find anything like it, anywhere. 1-1/16" opening, 22" long, 1" diameter round handle w/zero knurling or texture. Weighs at least 5 lbs. Only markings are several '4's....and then looks like the number 69 stamped below either a K or an R, then either a T or an F. Hmmmm. But any help would be most appreciated....

Thanks in advance,

Rick

Got this in a bucket of old stamped sockets. Looked pretty worthless to most everyone else at the sale. Only wish I could have found the drive plug. Here's a few before n aftershock. Might clean up the knurled handle a little more yet.

On a whim, ordered this unit last week from Ebay and just received it today.
Heavier and not as well-balanced as I would hope for, but those are matters of personal preference.
The QR design is evocative of the Indestro-Roberts model 2880 (same patent that was used in older Craftsman QR models.)

Not sure if I'll keep it or give it to the kid. He's a "lunk" weightlifter so he certainly won't have issues with it being heavier than those models I'm more accustomed to.

Got this today at the flea. If I had to guess, it's a Cornwell no. 55 gearless 1/2 rat with push-thru plug.

Only markings are "Pat. Applied For" and on the opposite side, a W.

Ayrhead,

Nice! That's from the Bonney-Gray era (when Bonney bailed them out). Made by Gray with Bonney specs and dies. It's 3/4-inch drive, right? I have the Bonney version, which they called the Hercules, No. 4298.

Hi Lugz: Thanks for the info. Yes it is a 3/4” drive. Any idea what year(s) the Gray 98 might be?

Looks 30's to me. And, thanks to the Tool Archives, our open door/open source policies, the generous collectors who lent their catalogs for scanning, and twertsy's hard work in scanning them, we have a public access library that includes a few Gray-Bonney era catalogs, including a 1936, where I found your Hy-Duty ratchet on page 7. Enjoy the excerpt.

Seen quite a few female ratchets like that that were made to be used as handles for valves in old factories and boiler houses. Typical installs would be in areas where a wheel handle would be in the way of other valves or against walls or floors. Openings would be sized to fit valve stems instead of standard sockets or push plugs.

Thanks Lugz for finding me the year. I tried saving a copy of the image for the ratchet but it wouldn’t let me. Is there a trick to it??

If you mean the catalog image, you have to click on it to open it all the way. Then right click should give you a whole bunch of options, including Save Picture As. That basically let's you save it to your desktop or folder of your choice etc with the current filename or whatever filename you want.

Pickop "Pick-Up" ratchet. More photos and info - including the patent, period ads, and a short bio on the inventor, posted in its own thread linked here.

Cross post.
A Snap On L-67 and have been elusive as a CF-87 Craftsman for me. This one is definitely a top 10 on the rare ratchet list for me.IMG_20200318_202719384.jpegIMG_20200318_202729988.jpegIMG_20200318_202736396.jpg

I bought a 3/8dr on eBay to complete a blue blowmold kit30822 that was missing it. I wondered about the whole thing since Kraeuter was originally specialized in pliers. There is a Kraeuter thread on the General Tools Discussion forum, and I skimmed it and I guess SK and Dresser would have been the owners of Kraeuter about the time of this 32070. I decided to give it a full teardown and lube. 40 teeth in the head, three teeth on each side of the pawls. It was a bit easier than a similar-age Bonney, but not as easy as a Craftsman. I wondered about what looks to be a BH, BN, or BM forged in where the retaining ring tabs are.
So...from the guts, what patent does it look to be?
