These are not super old but may fit in with those Plomb.

1/2" Asahi Tools ASH VR 4251 ( made in Japan) - looks like a little bit older knockoff of the Proto style head, which is pretty common these days.

1/2" Fleet 1663-A This one is kinda neat. I couldn't find any reference to it. Not sure if it's from the **** end of Fleet's existence. It follows the Penens head pattern but the cool thing to me was the different style handle than all the Penens and their rebrands out there. I'm sorry, I have a slew of Penens and such ratchets, but not with me to do a side by side comparison. Twertsy does have a number of them in earlier pages.
Some other interesting things about it are a three piece face plate design, one piece pawl (possibly stamped metal), brass lever, and L T (for loosen tighten). I think I've also seen the 3/8 version with this handle IIRC.
Never seen a fleet with that handle.

Most of my vintage 1/2 inch ratchets,

View media item 74247
From front to back:

Armstrong 1/2 inch, no idea of the age of this.. not sure its old enough to class as vintage?

'76 dated Par-x UR-71 Sadly had to fit a new kit in this as when i got it, the selector lever was broken off, and someone had clearly been using a cheater pipe on it and broke off two of the teeth from the gear :( shame as the original gear was chrome plated, and new ones have that ugly grove ground in them (hidden on Snap-On ones by the name plate) i may braze and zinc plate it at some point so it looks better, but as the chrome is peeling etc on the handle I'm not hugely precious about it..

'76 date coded (again) Snap-On GS710 in industrial finish, some animal had been beating on the handle of this with a hammer at some point, managed to carefully file and clean up the handle and reblued it so looks like honest wear now rather than abuse

Rheidco-Metabo push through type ratchet, 60s or 70s i think, quite nice and compact, but otherwise usual fare for this type of ratchet.

The last two are Hazet 916s, the first one (sadly engraved with a previous company/owners name on the head) is a 'small a' so pre 1965, second one is later, but still pre 1989 as marked west germany

Have realized recently that the Hazets bear striking resemblance to a herbrand S-10, right down to the selector switch and faceplate screw positions. some copying going on clearly, presumably after Herbrand stopped making this type, as im not sure when hazet first offered these, but must be 50s or later.

I don't have a Herbrand S-10 to compare directly yet, but would be interesting to see if the mechanisim is a complete clone,

I snipped your quote, but when I saw your pic initially I thought there were 2 Herbrand ratchets in your pic, you seem to collect vintage usa stuff so I didn't think twice. Then I read your post.

That's really interesting. I've been trying to find a Herbrand slide shifter in the wild but I live in Ohio and I have yet to see any Herbrand tools but the occasional onesy wrench. I also noticed Herbrand had a few different handle styles for their rats, they made an I beam type like your Hazets, a bullet shaped handle with 2 knurled bands, then this type (from aa) which I believe Proto copied for their XL ratchets.

Hi all. I don't mean to hack this thread, but I have been looking for a repair kit for a MAC xr8-p red handle ratchet for a long time without any luck. What I really need is the selector but would buy a complete kit if necessary. Do any of you know where I can buy one from? I've contacted MAC and they don't have kits for this old ratchet anymore. If this does not belong here do not hesitate to move it. Thanks.

I'll look. Seems I recall having one that doesn't work, which you're welcome to if that's the case.

Hi twertsy. That would be great. This ratchet has been in my dad's tool box for as long as I can remember, so I would really like to fix it. Thanks.

Found a few ratchets this week end, and was very happy to find number 2 and 3 OTC ratchets with plugs! The 3/8 is the H260 newer model of the female swivel I found a few weeks ago! Really liking the OTC stuff! Also All three sizes williams super ratchets, and older williams, and 2 Thorsens.

Very nice finds. Both of them OTC ratchets are hard to come by. I am kinda of regretting working this weekend instead of going to an auction. If you ever want to trade something for either one of them 3/8 rotos shoot me a PM.

Will do! I kinda have a good line on stuff like that. Theres a guy that deals in tools at all the near by events. He has MASSIVE amounts... I tell him what I'm looking for each month I go . If he sees it he puts it back for me! Ill look for one for you next month when I go. When I buy from him I always round up by $5, or more if its a big sale. Extra few bucks here n there keeps me in good graces!

Here is an odd partial hex drive set I picked up today. The ratchet looks kind of like an S-K hex I posted some time back but what seemed odd to me was that the sockets were metric.

you got some good pickups... I sure love finding ratchets for a buck! the proto is neat... i looked at the raised panels with a magnifying glass but couldnt find any kinds of lettering on either side. I guess its original.. says PROTO and WF21- and a tiny US stamped bedside that
.

Twertsy, you know much about that Proto ratchet I found ? Its got the WF21 and a smaller US stamped into it. Nothing I could see on the panels of the handle.

Nope, just another variation on the Penens style ratchets. I haven't seen that style handle with WF markings though I don't believe.

D42- that sure looks like a Dunlap set. Thought the ratchet would be marked though.

Ragtop- you're on a roll man. That Proto is cool with the Speedmaster style handle.

R - sweet haul there. Another female SK!

Thanks for your reply. I hope that they are Dunlap. I guess that I'll need to do some catalog research. I was just surprised to see metric Hex drive sockets.

I guess this is why it's not marked Dunlap or Craftsman. The last SAE Dunlap Hex set I found listed was in the '60 catalog. This metric set is from the '64 catalog and Dunlap had been discontinued by then.

To my knowledge, Sears axed the Dunlap name from handtools around 1958. Surprised to hear they had the name listed as late as a 1960 catalog. But I have often seen graphics and descriptions re-used in subsequent catalogs after the product itself had changed in some way. Based on the artifacts I've seen, I believe they replaced the old Dunlap name with just "SEARS" at that time. Wouldn't surprise me if the catalog shows Dunlap while the actual 1960 tool itself was marked SEARS. I've also seen instances where the contract mfr making Sears/Craftsman/Dunlap marked tools were making the identical tool for other sales outlets but had no brand name mark, leaving any retailer to instead brand the packaging themselves.

I found myself in a part of town I usually don't stop, so I decided to visit a pawn shop I haven't been to. I didn't need either enough to approach sticker price, but there was this cute peerless which is stuck, Seems to be aobut a 7/16 female square drive.
And a WF flavor I haven't seen before, and some Plomb/Cman things I'll detail in the show your Plomb thread. What's with the hole under the selector?

Here is the Dunlap hex drive set from the '60 catalog. It looks like the spinner is marked Dunlap but perhaps none of the rest of the tools. There are a lot of Dunlap marked tools listed in the '60 catalog but I believe that it was the swan song for Dunlap.

Never knew much about dunlap tools, but I snagged this little set at an Estate sale for a dollar, and a nother simular Craftsman set at another a while back for a dollar. They from the 50-60's yall think ?

I was surprised it doesn't roto quite all the way over, it will go past center either way though.

I dig the red-yellow Acetate on that dunlap man.
