Depending on when yah need Help I could probably come down, not far from here really.
I do need a break from plastering.. and sanding and now painting.

I can understand that for sure.

Even a "stuff consult" would be a great excuse to meet another member. I will send you a PM.

Strouty, first of all, the place is looking good! It'll just take time to get it completely tweaked. I can relate when you you get sidetracked in your own mind when moving stuff around, happens to me, just on a smaller scale.

My shop is a near complete, chaotic, semi organized disaster, but functional right now. I also have a clear vision of what how it's going to be when done. The funny comparison I make to yours is Ive bought 6 Vidmars/Listas in the past year that forced me to change my layout. It's something I didn't think I'd be able to do, but the opportunity kept coming up to buy and I did. It's gridlock right now, but soon I'll have a better shape of my layout coming.

In my opinion, the talk about having someone there to physically see what your doing, bounce stuff off in real time, help some, I think would be beneficial. And, I'm not saying this with anything against you at all. A lot of us do our shops by ourselves, without people who are there with you that get it!

The only better thing than discussion on GJ about shop stuff is discussion with GJ dudes right in our shops.

I wish I could come up.

Agreed on all fronts.

I decided to fix the first couple things that bug me. I went out to cut the knee high grass in front of the storage boxes, took a while to get the weed whacker going, but I finally got it going. Of course I ran out of string within minutes of starting, so I am off to the hardware store, I just want to get it done, not only does it look better, but it is functionally easier to get to the boxes. Also gave me an excuse to get the trimer out so I can use it at the house too.

The used battery I bought maybe two weeks ago is totally junk, I charged it for a few hours and the tester still drops it to completely dead. I only have one more battery and that one is slated for the crane. I don't want to buy a new one for the truck as it is not going on the road, so I may try my luck at another used one. I basically paid a few dollars over scrap, so I am not going to hold the guy hostage as I can recoup almost all my money. He always gives me good deals, probably had three used batteries over the last ten years that didn't last.

Got the string for the trimmer, then remembered I needed the battery adapters from NAPA, when I got there, they were having the bucket sale, so I ended up buying a new battery for the crane and I will put the other used one in the suburban. I also plan on putting a disconnect or just disconnecting the battery, so there is no issue if the truck does have a draw.

Eating lunch, then I will head out to finish the weed whacking. Not sure how much more I am going to do today, I still have things to do at home, so I don't want to be late like I was last night.

I guess I should have expected it, but every project is getting more involved by the second. I need to go back to NAPA so I can get some battery bolts that broke. The worst part is that I know I have some, just can't find them today. I guess I can return the battery core, so it is not a total waste, just wanted to do one simple thing and it turns into a not so simple thing. Oh well, at least it will be done and I won't have to worry about it again for a while. I did find the two disconnects that I bought the other day, so I will install one of each vehicle and see how they work, they are cheap and simple, so time will tell.

I am so proud of myself, I remembered after posting that the battery parts were in one of the drawers of the Lista cabinet that I sold. I then remembered that I put all that stuff into the drawers of one of the new cabinets and I found them first try. That just made my entire day, seems so simple, but it really is a great feeling. I can tell that I need an entire drawer devoted to battery connections and hardware, so that is on the agenda now.

Both the suburban and the crane now have good batteries and shut off switches.

I forgot that I also have to deal with a stupid robin that made a nest in the boom of the crane. I moved the nest yesterday and she found it, so I have to keep moving it so I can get it off the crane, I plan on using it in the next week and I don't want to kill baby birds if I can avoid it.

Off to the weeds again.

I'm a bit lame at the moment... I don't own a truck or trailer worth towing...

So...

If you can come pick me up and help deliver anything you enable me with... I could be tempted. I only require a small spot in the fridge for my coffee.

I can bring my own folding chair... it has a cup holder and even a sun shield if I need to supervise outside.

I think we need to start a garage journal "dating" thread. Then we can link up people that need help with people willing to help. I bet that could be a huge hit, I know I would help others out and it is obvious that others want to help me out.

Seriously though, has anyone watched the show "Garage Squad" on Velocity? For those that haven't, it's a show where people send in videos of them asking for help restoring a car that got sidelined in their garage and the producers choose a lucky person to get running. They send a group of people out with tools and they usually have one family member help. They get the cars running and put back together so they can be driven safely and the owner gets to drive again.

We could do a garage version of that where we restore peoples garages to usable condition. We should submit an idea to Velocity.

Or we should just do it. I think it would be worth talking to the mods, could end up as a sticky. It will at least help the people that want to be helped, I think it would be a great way to take this site to the next level.

Weed whacking is done, robin is getting closet to a tree every hour or so, probably have the nest in a tree by tomorrow.

I think I am about ready to head out for the day, tomorrow should be a very motivated day and I expect I will end up staying late to keep progress going. I can all ready tell I will be working here on the 4th, it will be better than any cookout I could attend.

Strouty you are a much better person than I, I would have tossed the nest off into the woods and been done with it.

We should plan a weekend in August to go help Strouty out, we can relieve him of unwanted (needed) **** and clean him out oops I mean up and get his shop ready for work. I for one have never been to Maine and would enjoy the trip, I can pick a couple of guys up on the way as well.

Hell Strouty, if I had know that you had that much weedwacking to do, I would have offered to bring the sickle mower with me tomorrow. It would have been its frirst outing and a good warmup for doing the north house in August.

Well the northern thrush was not in the nest when I left, if she is not there tomorrow, then the nest will get tossed. I figure I will give her a fair chance, she did pick a stupid spot, I put the wheel there to get the nest up higher. Where she started out was right in the end of the boom, so if I had lifted it, the nest would have fallen out and to the ground.

So if you are from China, Maine, does that make you Chinese, if so I bought a truck from China and it was painted olive drab, so I guess it was a Chinese Military truck.

Getting things prepped for my visit, not tidying up, just getting things opened for viewing and movement.

The best part about today is I will be down one more Lista cabinet, so less stuff to store!!!!

Works well when you have other members who can get together and help each other. I was about an hour away yesterday helping my son fix a dryer, then left there and went by member Beyond1's house to help him build a ramp to get his zero turn into his storage building. There are about 6 members within about an hour or less around here that I know of.

I know of several, but we have yet to get together for a project. It seems like the best way to do things. My guess is we all have different skills that would compliment each other, so getting things done could be a lot easier. Many members are more private and would not want to get involved, I can totally understand this, but I still think getting together for almost any reason is a good reason.

We have the Florida Chapter down here for few years now. Have couple of members real close say within 20 mins away and some 3 hours like Shorty and CB. I've found that it all depends on how much someone is dedicated to actually getting together for whatever the case might be. I had good turn out at the together at house last time. Its all about planning, giving enough notice so people fit into schedules and people actually willing to show up.

Had a great day, Jakemac and Orionrising showed up to help and they were great. Made some decisions, moved some stuff, dismantled some things, reassembled other things. I think it was just the kick I needed to get things moving again! I honestly only took a couple of pictures, but we did a ton of work and I am feeling it. We took the upper part of the stockroom down so I can start eliminating the shelving and adding more Lista cabinets. I am also starting to see the shape of the stockroom, looks like the layout will be completely based on the Storage Wall system. We also customized a few of the new cabinets, I still have to fine tune a couple of them, but looks like they will be a great addition for sure.

Just got home and settled in. I'm beat and so is the dog. It feels good to get out of my boots and into a pair of sneakers.

We got a lot done, moving things about. I feel like we left a bit of a mess for Strouty to clean up. But it's a manageable mess that gives him a good path to progress. He has a good vision (in Lista Blue) of where he wants to get to and with a little work here and a bit more there, he'll get there. It's going to be beautiful.

Leaving the cabinet on the trailer for the night (need to dig up a tarp). Hopefully, I'll be able to wash and degrease it tomorrow and get it into the shop.

image.jpg

I had a really great day, and even got to play with a few of Strouty's (smaller) toys.
Looking forward to seeing it all come together.

Now I need to catch up with the rest of the forum. It's been a long day.

Hey Strouty,
I think you left something behind. :lol_hitti

I'm pulling the cabinet apart to wash it, and found a box (along with the usual trash, oil, and grease) under the floor panel. Inside the box is a Central Tool Co. dial micrometer. The screws are missing from the backplate, so they duct taped it. Not sure how accurate it is now.

Let me know if you want it back.

You found it fair and square. I have some ones that are not as fancy, you know, the style without the duct tape. ;)

I haven't been able to get much done at the shop, been helping the GF with a project, I did make a mess at the shop, so I guess that counts. I am going to spend a couple hours here before the fireworks make traffic a nightmare.

Tomorrow I have a couple of meetings, then I may go look at another suburban, but I am trying to talk myself out of it, I really don't want to spend any more money on vehicles right now. Let me rephrase that, I want to spend money on a vehicle, but when I am done, I want a dependable vehicle with A/C.

On a shop/stockroom note, I started mapping out the temporary layout and it looks like I can only use two more of the large cabinets and two of the small ones. This is good, because if I needed three of the large ones, I would have to take the one out of the conex and I really didn't want to do that. I have decided that the rotabin is going to end up in the conex, I just can't part with it, but it really just doesn't work for my design plans in the stockroom.
