No shop progress today, worked on cleaning up a tower site and then came back and loaded up some stuff for the lady that owns my future house. We are shooting for November 15th as the official date for the deal, lawyers are working on the details now. I am going to take a load to the scrap yard next week, there are a few loads that might cover a little of the trash removal costs, still going to be a chunk of change, but I have been prepping for it.

We have been using tower sections for a pier on the island, tower steel is all galvanized, so it is great to use around the ocean. Of course we have to get all the I beams galvanized. There is going to be a large crane on the end of the pier, I think the pier will be almost 150 long including the docks.





I keep forgetting to take a picture of the new F700 that I got, it has a knuckle boom on it, I think the truck will replace the current crane and then eventually I can install it on a better truck.



And yes, it runs on propane.

This sound's like more than just a boat/swimming dock with a large crane on the end. Is this a non "ferry boat" serviced island? You sure get into a bunch of neat ****!

Yup, no ferry service or any town services to speak of, taxes are high, they do offer a fire boat though. Of course code enforcement and planning department want to have a say. You will be able to drive a pickup truck down the pier to the crane if you wanted to.

They build the piers differently when they are installing boat lifts... platforms here have to be floating due to the tide...

The actual platform in the water will float, but the pier is embedded in the ledge here. It needs to be anchored well for the crane to work, the crane is from a truck, it used to be on a line truck the telephone company used, so it is fairly heavy duty. The engineer that designed all the structure does our towers too, he loves this stuff. I have actually built a few backing things with him, we made a cable traverse across a river in New Hampshire and a couple foot bridges for crossing streams as well, they were about 60 feet long, so decent size. This is my first pier.

The local yacht builder has something like a four post lift in the water with an overhead gantry that allows huge yachts to be swung out over the water then lowered. It's made out of huge I beams...

This will be a bit funkier, also probably won't happen until next year or the year after, things have been slow going, my Dad is trying to buy the land on the island and has been up against an evil sister that thinks it is worth 10 times what it was appraised at so we decided to stop the pier until all is settled.

I have been so busy this week, working late almost every night, today I am at the shop and I have lost all motivation. I am going to try the cleaning truck myself into working thing, but I may head out and regroup tomorrow.

I will post pics as I go, so far just helping the owner remove old furniture, the deal isn’t official yet, but I am confident. I should have more info next week, but there will be a couple weeks at least before I really start digging in, that is when I will start posting pictures of the progress.

I had pulled Clark inside yesterday to keep him dry so I could do an oil change and add some lights. With darkness coming in at about 5 after the time change, Clark is almost useless after dark and I have been using magnetic lights and headlamps, this really doesn’t work well because of the shadows and reflections that get created. I will be essentially making daylight all around when I get done.

I found that if I completely disassemble them, you can swap the wires to the other end. Then I think I may need to swap out the wire, they are a bit short. I know I can make adding lights into a two week process.

I had a project like that... I made an adapting plate I made out of box beam, square tube... I wired a left, right... with the dumb ones on top.

You can technically swap it, but the wires end up going through the top on one side and the bottom on the other side.

After looking at the wiring, I am going to do a new setup, then when I looked at the plumbing for the fuel, it is run to one side, then back to the other and I can’t figure out why. I can see the filter and the pump, but the filter is in a dumb place, probably deal with that another time. I was going to run two wires to all the lights and just have a ground distribution block near the power one, but the wire I thought I had is MIA, so unless I find some tonight, each light will get a local ground, not sure how finicky they will be. Of course I already installed the weatherpack connectors for two wires. I guess I could have the ground just come out the other side, I just figured these lights will most likely get smashed and having a connector will make swapping them out a bit easier. Plus I wanted to use my cool new crimper, it worked great in case you were wondering.

If you make the ground come out the other side it then becomes more plug and play, you don't have to mess with ground.

Not understanding the LED light in pairs issue? Seems like you could easily use a pair on the front, another pair on the back and maybe one each side for extra perimeter lighting as required.

The lights have the wires coming out of the same side, which is offset, so one side will have the wiring outbound and the other side the wires will be inbound, just an annoyance for me.

I have also been struggling with the new F700 knuckle boom, it runs on LPG and it won’t start now. Need to figure that out as the truck is in an awful position if it were to snow. I also need to order some parts for all the current projects, Clark may end up back outside for a couple days while I wait for parts. I really need to get the shop cleaned up a touch more so I have everything accessible while a project or two is inside, right now it is like tripping over one thing to get to another. I think I can fix that in the next two days.

I'm literally tripping over stuff in my garage too, but it would take at least two full days without rain to allow me to get it back to organized. And I need to make room inside for two of my motorcycles which are currently covered in the back driveway.

Today turned into a rest day, I felt like I had either been beaten by a 2x4 or in a car accident. I guess my body decided to let me know I was overdoing things. I have a knot in my left upper back, pretty much wreaking havoc on my entire left side, going to sleep on a heating pad. So shop progress will be slow this week, but I will get back to it.

I got the LPG Ford moves this morning, I am meeting over at my Dad’s shop today to unload a bunch of his rigging equipment and maybe even move some of the trucks around. I really want to get the F700 crew cab dug out, that would make my entire week.

The lights looks similar to what I installed on my Bobcat 320 excavator. Frankly, I was very underwhelmed by the lights.

I would recommend you just clamp them on with a vise grips, wire it up as quick and dirty as you can, and then see how it works outside.

I think you might want more light. It would be better to find that out before going to a ton work to make it look pretty.....

I wish I had gone with the larger LED lights.... they illuminate enough to see, but it is not nearly bright enough. Most of the brightness you see in the picture is from the flash of the camera, not the LED lights on the excavator......

No matter what, the wiring will be the same, so I can get that taken care of, will check them out tomorrow after dark.

Spent the afternoon at my Father’s storage building, got the F700 crew cab started and out of the Quonset hut, it took about 6 hours total, but it was worth it. It was a very tight squeeze.





Next step is to get it over to my shop, not sure if I am going to drive it or haul it, probably haul it since the gas and carb have been in storage for almost 20 years. We started a fire while trying to get it started, but once I smacked the carb bowl a couple times the float freed up and it ran semi fine.

It is a pretty neat truck, will really look like a beast when I get done, right now it looks too much like a plain old utility truck. Plans for it are:
