Well, got a lot done today, just not a lot of what I thought I was going to get done. I did get the paperwork for the new truck and the plow picked up, I am over at the Salvage Garage now, had to get diesel and the plow needs a headlight bulb, I may just leave the plow here, not like I need it at the Hill right now. Except for the bulb, it works and looks really nice, I am overall happy with the purchase.

I already have an older one, I bought one just like this (not stainless) last year, but the Blurb had so many issues it never got installed. I think I am going to list my old beat up one for $1000 and send it packing, it has done very well for me, but the newer plows are a bit nicer and having two identical ones is better in the scheme of things.

Today we are going to get some more of the road cleaned up, the rain showed some issues that weren’t apparent. Glad we can rectify them before spring when the mud would be more of an issue. I have to shuffle a few trucks and things to make room for dumping the material that gets removed from the road. I expect to have a lot more material from the bottom of the driveway as well, that will be later in the week though. Weather looks decent for the rest of the week, then might be some more rain early next week, but the weather guessers may change the game, too early to tell. ;)

Can't resist that 6.5 stuff can you. Once you open that can of worms(body work, rust) it will be never ending and then it won't be a daily driver anymore. I've done tons of that on my bucket truck but its not a daily driver so having it down meant no big deal.

The new truck won’t be too bad, I am not tearing into it until I have a backup vehicle. I figure the brakes and front end stuff will take the better part of a day, I am going to do both wheel bearings since they have to come out anyways to do the rotors. At some point after that I will have to dedicate another good solid two days to do the exhaust, glow plugs, and injectors, also swap front fenders, but that will make things a lot easier to do the other work.

I am going to get the last load of stumps out of the area heading down to the Quonset hut (future access road), then we have to move a couple trailers at the bottom of the Hill and start hauling all the dirt from that area up to the top. Then I have access to the Drott so it can be prepped and loaded up for the scrap yard, probably after Christmas as there is a decent amount I need to do before it goes.

We have to save the “good” wood, probably end up in the Quonset hut. :(

Got most of the parts for the new truck ordered, I am borrowing the Ford for the weekend and going to try and do the front end of the truck while I have other wheels. Now I am off to the Mitsu to move the last load of stumps, then I think it is going to be some wood chips, except that will end up being a dozen trips probably. :(

The work light on the Mitsu started working, I think it is a ground issue or the switch, or both, anyways it stayed on and I got the army dump loaded again. The dump truck has terrible reverse lights, so I will wait until tomorrow to dump it. The front of the shop looks good too, going to have to roll it a bit as it is waffled from the excavator tracks.

Annoyingly, the “good” new forklift wouldn’t start, but the “worse” one started no problem, go figure. I think there is a fuel issue with the good one, I wanted to bring it in to do a service on it, apparently it is going to have to wait until it is warmer at a minimum. The batteries are also not the best, they hold voltage but definitely drop off way more than I would like when cranking the engine. I wanted to get the parking brake figured out so I can use it, going to need something this weekend for sure. Maybe I can get the bad one functioning??? At least it is inside.

I am just not sure what it is with rear GM brakes, but I think they hate me. One side was too tight after the adjustment, I will say that my Buddy didn't want to do what I always do, neutral, then run the truck, forward, brake, reverse brake, brake, release, repeat. if it isn't too tight after that, should be good. Luckily I got it loosened up so I can now do my procedure, except I am on the floor at the Salvage Garage, not on the lift at the Hill. I guess the bright side is I could be outside on the dirt.IMG_6703.jpeg

Yesterday once the snow squalls hit the temps felt like they dropped tremendously but it was really just the wind chill that dropped. Let dogs out this morning and the wind is already stiff. Not working outside today if I can help it. This weekend 40s though so....

I am working outside today, looking forward to the weekend temps, even next week looks decent. This time of year I will take all the degrees a college can't issue.
My hands hate the wind. Too many years of outdoor maintenance on pumps where you can't wear gloves. No wind and I can get by at these temps. I probably should have used my college degree :)

Yup, on the towers there is a lot of small hardware that you can't wear gloves, so I feel your pain. Then there are the times where you drop one glove, that is always fun (I got smart fairly quick and generally carry an extra pair inside my jacket just for that reason).

I will say that there is no wind to speak of down here, so it isn't terrible unless you are not moving, then there isn't a lot that will help.

I was trying to find the spare filters that the guy gave me with the military forklifts, can't find them, already spent too much time looking. Now I am going to order some new ones and try to get the "good" one started. Fuel filters are definitely old, not many hours, but there is rust along the top of them. Provided I can get it going, I will do a full service then try to hook up the emergency brake using the electric valve they had started to install. It looks like it should work, but only when running, the valve is normally open and uses 24 volts to close, so it would essentially lock the air in the service brake can (you must apply brakes before engaging it) holding the brake engaged like having your foot one the pedal. I want to setup the manual cables, then you would have a brake regardless of voltage or air pressure. I need to remove the cables from the other one and then find them (one is broken), I am sure someone will list them by size and length, not just part number or application.

So far the afternoon has NOT been as good as the morning. The big fire truck was a PITA as we had pulled the batteries out to replace them, except in order to get the cab up to replace the batteries, you need batteries that are hooked up (they can be dead), the jumper posts do nothing if the wires aren’t hooked up correctly. I had to make up some jumpers and pretend I was a contortionist to get it going. At that point it started, but ran like ****, it seems to have come out of it, but we will see if it starts again.

Yup, everything I would like to start, won't, going to get some fuel filters and other stuff, then I have to bring Dad to get one of his vehicles from eh repair place, then I have to deliver a Lista roll cart and possibly pick up a Lista bench. I just hope that tomorrow will be better than this afternoon. I have all the booster packs on charge, the batteries in the "good" forklift are on charge. Wish me luck.
