@Strouty How's today going for you? Did you have to do more snow cleanup, or are you able to work on shop moving tasks?

Here in SD, -18F this morning, its now warmed to 1F, but I'm avoiding any work outside. Fortunately, heat in the garage shop means work continues comfortably there!
Due to the lack of snow, the snowmobile hasn't been even started this winter, so no fun snow pics from me right now! What Jack Stand is showing does look like fun!

Hopefully whatever you're working on is going smoothly.

Strouty-- how are you feeling today with all the aches and pains?

"Cold" and windy down in PA, but hopefully will start to warm up this weekend.

Rest up and be ready for the warmer weather on its way!

So no legal action? Not that i propose such nonsense...
They were my steps, so I could sue the pants off that a$$hat, but all I would end up with is a few thousand DVDs.

Still ok, a little stiff, but nothing seems injured.
For a guy that states he hates snow as much as you do, you sure collect a lot of it! :lol_hitti
One time, just one time when I was six years old I enjoyed the snow and now they dump it on me every year, I wish I had never owned that stinking sled.

We are supposed to see 40s in the next few days, I am trying to figure what is my best course of action right now, I was going to dig out a bunch of things from the snow banks, but I may not waste my time on some of it as I think the snow will melt enough to get the access I need naturally. I want to “be productive” but honestly, it seems like I am trying to make work for work’s sake. I have a thousand other things that I could do that are unencumbered by snow and weather, yet here I am trying to free things from the clutches of winter and if it snows again, I will have to do it all over again. Frustration is setting in.

So far I have moved a lot of snow, broken one shovel, and can tell my knee is sore from the stairs incident the other night. I have a couple more hours of daylight, going to use it to its fullest and see where we are at. Plan will be to attack the Salvage Garage tomorrow, it is supposed to be warmer than today and today isn’t even that bad.

I totally get you.... when I get in that type of cycle, it's sometimes best to use a mind reset and do something completely different.... watch part of a movie or a show, or read a book, or even just do something like sweep the floor. For me, doing something that's low mental energy allows me to rumitate and then get a light bulb on for what I should actually be doing. I saw your later message and it seems like you figured out a plan that works for you, so that's great!

Meanwhile, we also had wonderful weather today, 45F, minimal wind and sunny. A nice change from last week of negative numbers for temperature.
The one bad thing about warmer temperatures is the ground softening and mud! When that happens, it's best to stop, and wait for the night for things to freeze before trying to push a rope!

Hopefully your moves of vehicles are successful today and tomorrow!

I pretty much got everything at the Hill cleaned off and dug out. I am going to let things sit for an another day, there should be some good melting and the last bits of snow and ice way actually be gone by Monday. I busted out the Mistu and pushed all the bankings back, if we do get more, I will be ready. Unfortunately the belt for the blower part of the snowblower failed and I had to shovel the Muv-All instead of using the snowblower. It is cleared now, hopefully the sun will clear off the rest.

Luckily I also have this cabinet, so I should be more than set for my current collection. ;)

IMG_1164.jpegIMG_1165.jpeg

The only downfall is that the movies have to lay like this to fit well. I am going to have to make up some magnetic bookend type things, that will keep the partial rows from tipping over when the drawer is opened or closed.

I have a few similar Steelcase cabinets. These older style drawer slides are really heavy duty. I do have one drawer filled with DVDs.

I was almost where I wanted to be, then I ran into one problem after another, got past a couple, but one of them is going to take some more supplies that I don't have today. I just hope the weather holds up long enough for me to free everything from the snowbanks that I would like out. I still have a couple hours of daylight, but I am running out of back, just too much shoveling.

It looks like I am going to have help a few days this week, that will be useful for sure. The weather looks good through Wednesday, then there might be some snow/rain, just not sure when or how much of either. I wish the sun was out, temps are upper 30s, but with the clouds melting is slow. I have to change course a bit so I am ready for help starting tomorrow. I am going to let the warmer temps do their thing at the Hill and finish moving things around on Wednesday. It will be easier with two people anyways.

I went to my shed a few days ago and on the way back to the garage I walked onto a slightly sloped area where the top of the snow was 1/2" of solid ice - like a tilted hockey rink. I slid about 10' without falling before I got to the edge of the ice and was able to stop. During the "slide" I tweaked my knee a little bit and it's been complaining a bit for the last few days.

Feel better!

Cheers

Jim

I hope the sun comes out today, if it does things will be melted and everything I dug out will be cleared of snow and ice. My help will be here in about an hour, so I am trying to make a dent in the shop space so I don't waste too much time when it counts. I know that he will be helping me move DVDs and other stuff, there is just no way around it. I am trying to balance things with the Hill and the Salvage Garage, so much is up in the air right now it isn't even funny. I used to be able to juggle, but now I look like an idiot that just can't handle the mess I created.

Clark had developed a leak from the hydraulic tank, pretty bad too, turned out that someone had "fixed" a leak with RTV sealant and the "repair" just failed. Between the condition of the tank, the water in the fluid (looked like iced coffee) I decided it was time to do some repairs to Clark. We pulled the tanks off the parts forklift, hydraulic tank is in great condition, fuel tank has a pin hole at the bottom and is clearly rusty inside. I am going to temporarily run Clark from a boat style tank, that way I can use the original tank that is smashed up as parts for the tank that is in better looking condition, but needs to be repaired due to leaks/rust. Both tanks that are on Clark have the sides crushed in and these are a funky shape, so not easy to just make new ones. In the same moment of clarity, I decided to just start fixing everything, so the carb got pulled off, the intake and exhaust was removed, then we took the radiator out. I am thinking that the hydraulic valving is going to get some work done on it too, basically use the parts forklift for all it is worth. Will remake any hydraulic lines as needed and also fix the lights. Even thinking that it is time to put glass in the windshield and maybe even add a wiper. I am sure this will lead to more repairs, but this stuff is long overdo and I am going to rely on Clark in a couple weeks to get everything moved around the yard.

Also spent time and put the tilt cylinders back on the BFF, cobbled a couple lines together so that it functions, but need to make up some steel lines to match the factory ones. Fixed the ignition temporarily and ordered all the permanent fix parts, chased down the alternator and wiring, ordered a new alternator, getting all new belts.

Fixed the ignition on the Hyster at the Hill, it is good to go, next is sorting out the mechanical ebrake.

Looked over the military forklift and chased the wiring a bit, all the lights work, but the wiring to them is abysmal. Ordered parts for to fix the rats nest under the dash.

Basically been a whirlwind and looks like it will continue for a few weeks. My goal is to be ready once we stop getting snowed on and the snow we have is gone. I think this will give me a head start and I won't be subject to mid stream failures due to equipment.

I pulled a Strouty move and bought another forklift! It went pretty cheap on K-bid and checked almost all of the boxes that I had in mind: smaller unit (3000 lb capacity), pneumatic tires, 3-stage mast for 171" lift, and bonus... side shift. It will need some work, as it runs a bit rough (likely points/spark plugs) and will need at least 1 hose for the side shift replaced as it's a gusher!
Even with gas, trailer rental and driving 4 hrs 1 way to get it, I'm still money ahead from anything available in my area for forklifts.
This will hopefully be a good upgrade from my 1950's era Clark Yardlift 4024 that is low on power and no power steering.
Because of the 3-stage mast, it's a bit lower height, which will be great since the door on my new lean-to has limited height and the old Clark was going to be really close on clearance.

Strouty, hopefully the repairs on Clark go smoothly! Your future self is going to thank you once done. Don't let perfect get in the way of good enough!

Maybe you can answer this question, why is it that a Freightliner M2 Sport Chassis can easily go for six figures used, but a day cab or other similarly sized chassis can be had for much less? I can find a single-axle Kenworth/Freightliner easily for 28k and under 500k on the odometer, forget about that M2 chassis though! I'm wondering if a crew cab could be had from another truck, like those Internationals I see the utility company using, and just put that onto a single-axle day cab chassis for the shorter wheelbase.

The M2 sport chassis are pretty fancy, crew cabs for that generation are not as common and if they were work trucks, they would either be beat or stripped down. I still think you are right in thinking the sport chassis is way overpriced though. If you found a fire truck it would most likely be in the best shape overall, but then the gearing will probably be wrong for over the road hauling.

Ken, that looks like a nice unit with good specs also sounds like a great upgrade!

Today I picked up a bunch of plastic pallets to aid in moving stuff around, got 29 for $200 and these are the heavy duty ones with the smaller footprint that I like. I have a couple errands and some office work to do, back at it tomorrow.
