I was doing the math and I can make one cabinet with 6 full width drawers and another with the top full width, then 4 of the 9" deep drawers on each side. I haven't figured out if I am going to do one with all small drawers or not. If I do that it will have 24 of the 3" drawers, 12 on each side.

I do use magnetic tape but the painter's tape is much quicker to start with. I guess i will have to take pictures of my drawer labels before you guys show up.

The old thread would be hard to digest from beginning to end, I used to look back through it, but I could never reread the entire thing.

I am actually looking at a program for my office files that is similar to what you are describing. It is more of a catch all/note taking program that allows you to sort and search very easily. Not sure if it is Mac only or not. The program is called Devonthink. If it doesn't pan out, the excel is certainly much easier to handle. Thanks for the idea.

My Snap On driver sold all new workstations to a local dealership and he knew I liked Lista cabinets, so he asked if I wanted to make an offer for them. I only saw one picture and made the offer ASAP. They accepted it and I now have 13 cabinets and another 13 storage tables coming in the next few weeks. So I have to get these ones taken care of quickly so I have room for the other ones.

I did some stretching and took some Advil, now my back feels a little better. I have a conference call around 11 so I wanted to get something done. Ripped out the rest of the drawers and I am now ready to remove the bracing so I can install all the wide drawers. I need to cut a tab off the back of all the drawers so they clear the framework, this is much easier than trying to cut all the framework out, especially since it will damage the good cabinets.

First cabinet done, came out really nice. I will have to touch up the paint on the bottom frame, other than that it looks factory and should still lock if I wanted to.

Yea I saw your example... BITCHING !!!!

I currently have a freaking label on all my tool drawers... your technique wouldn't be convenient for those...

BUT...

I'm SO STEALING your idea for my parts consumables... since they are mostly in Durham and Hillman cabinets and it's hard to remember which section they are in ... I have cabinets in 4 distinct areas... PLUS 2 racks... one on wheels... not to mention the stuff stuffed under things.

The shelving that I bought for my stockroom was from another stockroom and it was labeled like that, some of the labeling is still there. Honestly, I prefer not having to use an interface and ultimately I hope I can get things so organized that I can find anything in a matter of seconds. I always tried to keep like with like and that works well, except when you run out of room and have to tuck something in with unlike things. That can be downright scary trying to find something later.

I try to tell my kids just to find a drawer of like items and put it there. But they still just leave my tools out for dad to put away. Used to have all my tools on pegboard that worked till they took off more than one tool at a time.

Tools on peg board should be outlined, or shadowed, then you know exactly what goes where. I have a friend that made an aluminum shadow of all the tools on the boards, it looks really cool, but it took lots of time.

Solving the overflow problem can't be impossible. Presumably there are lots of solutions out there.

I'm trying NOT to hoard too much stuff, chipping away at the extra. Maybe an overflow plan would help - a process that you can quickly do when space is tight, that doesn't incur any "cognitive debt" that you have to deal with later?

You are not hoarding... we do not hoard...

We do however "Organizationally Prepare for Future Needs" or OPFFN.

One key to OPFFN is to have organizational skills, several label makers, plenty of empty space, a fork lift and lots of storage type containers. Pallet racking and a spare school bus is extremely helpful.

I noticed that too. I usually take pictures before I post but you can do this. If you hit home button quick twice you can see apps you been using. Flip over to camera and take the picture then flip back to tapatalk. Your picture will show up in camera roll. You don't need to exit your post just dont hit the insert picture tap until you taken picture.



I used to have to exit post if I forgot a picture or needed the link for something. Now I just leave app in middle of post flip over to internet or camera then flip back and finish post.

I don't like banks of all the same kind and color of organization, where labels are needed to find anything.

So I've started my own thread, to explore and discover what works for me.

I like that term "overflow plan", I put most things on wheels so I can adjust to suit what I am working on very quickly. Anything not on wheels is movable with a pallet jack.

This is my "outside forklift" it is a Clark Ranger, I guess I will call it Clark from now on.

Yup, Clark is a bit of an ugly duckling, long term plan is to change a bunch of things. One of the biggest is to add glass to the windshield so rain/snow doesn't come inside.

Use plexi for the front. Safer when something drops off the forks and easier to replace.
