How often are you replacing gaskets that you need to keep them in stock? I'm spoiled with 3+ parts stores within 15 minutes of my house and only 5 minutes from work.

The parts store is about 20 minutes away, but it is the time that it costs me for everything, an $8 gasket is not worth an hour and a half of my time, besides I like to keep certain things in stock, that particular gasket is not included in some of the kits, so I really wanted to have it. I have an entire drawer of gaskets, some are unknown and I need to get rid of those. I think I could also dedicate a drawer to the 6.5 diesels, I have enough of them.

I am kind of excited about getting rid of some of my projects or at least completing some.

I did just stumble on a welder that I may have to buy, the guy bought a bunch of welding equipment and is selling it all off, he has some nice stuff and I think I can get a great deal. If I didn't have a dentist appointment today, I would be driving right now to check his stuff out.

I suppose so. Usually I'm fixing daily drivers so I've never had the time to buy parts online and wait for it to ship.

I find momentum builds momentum so I'm sure you'll keep cranking stuff out.

I think I missed it, have you closed on the house already? If so, congrats. I'm looking forward to seeing that come together. As you've said, once you're closer life should be easier!

The house closing has been delayed, the owner is being a cheapskate and doesn't like working with her lawyer so things are dragging slow. I am supposed to meet with her on Friday so we can "finalize" the terms, then she will have her lawyer review it, then I am sure we will have to meet again to "finalize" things, again. :( At this point, I am OK with this, nothing is going to really happen until spring anyways, so I could drag my feet until March and it would still be fine.

If she’s being flaky, make sure you get a commitment in writing (signed/notorized) that guarantees that you get paid for all the cleanup, trash removal, and general aggravation in the event that she backs out of the sale, or sells to someone else who makes a better offer.

Your work on the property has already made it more sellable for her.

I am not too concerned about that, she can't easily sell it to anyone else, she would have to do a ton to make the place into a rental unit. Worst case is I sign it and have to make a few payments before I really start the work, no big deal on my end.

Today was a messy day, tonight might be all rain or a mix, you never know these days.

I have talked with three Craigslist people, trying to make a one trip for multiple things day. Right now I am headed to the office to try and find my old iPad, then need to go to the shop to get some pictures of stuff so I can list it on eBay, they offered 5 listings with no final value fees, so I am trying to list a bunch of expensive stuff that is just wasting space.

MacBook, snap on RC body, iPad, iPhone, decal sheet or something else.

Should save me a bunch in final value fees.

It is almost all rain now, probably be a frozen mess tomorrow :(

Going to pick up a bit, I need some room to take pictures of the stuff.

The rest of the shop looks pretty decent.

Looks better already, probably going to list the items with not all the pictures, then I can update later, all I need to do is get them listed tonight, then they are eligible for the deal.

The welder is a Miller alumapro with a 25’ water cooled push pull gun, it is essentially a feeder until you hook it up to one of the newer power supplies, then it will do all sorts of fancy things. You can use 16 pound spools of aluminum, instead of all those stupid little ones that you use in the spool guns. Basically the unit would be a tad over $6k new and he is asking $2k for it. I have wanted a push pull gun for a long time, my dad bought a newer 252 (iirc) with the air cooled push pull gun, they used it for rebuilding a trailer, just welding mild steel, I thought that was a waste, these things are awesome for aluminum. I can definitely sell one of my spool guns, maybe even two of them. I will probably keep the baby one that works with my 211, I think the portability of that is awesome. The guy also has some tig equipment and I am going to try for a package deal, then I can sell the Lincoln 185 tig I got from my Father. No sense in mixing blue and red in one shop. ;)

I couldn't list one item, the phone, it would not reset and for some reason I could not remember the passcode, now it is having a fit.................. As I am typing this, it looks like I got it to reset, at least it is doing something different, at this point different is better than pounding my head against the wall.

I think I am going to plow the slush today, worried it will freeze up on me and that would not be cool or maybe too cool??? :headscrat

Strouty,
Your yard was looking a little barren lately with nothing but mud so we took up a collection here and decided to send you a little bit of Lake Michigan. Hope you enjoy it and have your plow working.

According to today's radar it looks like I may get to shovel snow this year after all. Or maybe just used 4WD until it melts again.

We have been getting a mix of ****, I am in Massachusetts right now going to look at another welder. I stopped for dinner, traffic was getting bad and I figured I was going to need to eat anyways.

So far I bought one wire feeder, one high frequency box, and one broken welder.

What high freq box did you buy? I have an old Miller HF-15-2WG i pulled apart for rebuild years ago before i had actual tig welders.

Dinner was way filling. Now I have to brave the traffic, probably going to sit here for a bit, I guess it would be better than sitting in traffic?

As 86 already knows, I also bought a broken Miller Aerowave welder, no clue if I will be able to fix it or not, but I am willing to play a game with it, let’s call it frustrate Strouty.

I downloaded the manual and she is pretty freaking electronic inside, not what you would expect for a 1990s welder, at least not me. It just barely, I mean barely, fit into the back of the burb. This is another reason I need another truck, stuff like this is very difficult to acquire. ;)

The Aerowave was an outstandingly cool welder that was extremely capable on AC. They are also notorious for getting bad boards that aren't available from Miller anymore.

If you can suss out what board is bad, there are several board repair places that specialize in repairing CNC controls and things like that.

From what i've read, NEVER change the bottom row of knobs once you get it working right. They are VERY hard to setup correctly. I've never used one, but after Strouty and i talked about it, i started researching.

They have a devoted following, and a long history of bad boards that are unobtanium. The fact Strouty has one good mainboard, he should be able to recoup his costs even if he can't get it working.

I would search out 7A749 on weldingweb.com forums. He knows where to send boards for repair if needed.

I am kind of excited for the challenge of the Aerowave.

I ended up buying a 250 syncrowave and a 300, didn’t but the extra stuff he has as it looked like junk. I am going to unload them tonight, well the 300 was way too big, so I need to go back and get that one next week.

I just plowed with no plow lights, that was fun, I almost had half the truck headlights, but only when the blade was down. One more of my “projects” to complete. At least it now it will freeze as a decent surface, maybe it will stay cold now. The worst thing is the conex is no longer able to be opened, the frost is up close to 6” now, it has never been this bad. I am going to have to lift it up and put some blocks under the front end. :(

Unloaded the welders, kind of a ***** to get the Aerowave out, had to shoe horn it in with two people, got it out though. Need to park Clark in a good spot, going to be really cold the next few days, single and negative digit low temps with highs in the low 20s if we are lucky.

I'll be curious how the 250 compares to the 300. I've never used a 250, but they are well regarded. Let me know if you need the torch. 12.5' vinyl, but it'll get you started if you need it. I grabbed a 25' WP-20 water cooled at a local auction for like 10 bucks. I would like to upgrade to superflex hoses though. $155 on amazon. I'm using an air cooled torch now, i'm planning to get a water cooler asap. I've had my gloves smoking with the air torch!

Why did you buy the HF251? Flip it?

Because it was essentially new, I don’t know if I will flip it yet, I am kind of thinking of the future, if I buy a newer power supply, then this can get packaged with the shopmaster, probably make it worth more to someone. I am thinking that may happen in the next year or so, but we will see, could be I consolidate things down a bit and just stick with a 211, a 252, and a syncrowave. I like the versatility of the power supply, but it takes up some space for sure. Right now I need to get that Lincoln listed and gone, I have way too many tig welders for someone that has never tig welded before.

I forgot to post pictures of the project that the guy I bought the two syncrowave welders from was working on, he definitely knows aluminum.

Is the Lincoln the Precision TIG 185?

When I first started looking at a welder, I was really set on blue, but the SquareWave TIG200 reviews were just great and my local dealer made me a deal I couldn't pass up, plus a $150 rebate on top of that. Now I see the MSRP for it is over $1600! It went up over $200. I'm so glad I bought mine when I did. Now i just need to make room so i can unbox it and start using it.

We've got a precision TIG 275 here at work as the main welder, the shop guys hate that thing. It's got a mind of it's own. I tried to get a Dynasty 350 one year when we had a lot of extra fixed asset money, but it got shot down at the last minute.

That aluminum place looks awesome!

I know what you mean about having too many welders. I need to thin the herd. They're taking up a lot of floorium.

I don’t know what model the Lincoln is, but no one likes how it welded. It was weird, that was what I was told. They bought some miller syncrowaves and like them much better.

I'm glad you guys are criticing TIGs. If I was going to buy a small one, say for welding up to 1/4" steel, and aluminium, or stainless, what would you guys get?

That's what our guys say. Just bad weld characteristics.

What's your budget?

I was going to get the Miller multi-process unit but only for TIG & stick, but I'm happy with my choice. I have no plans to MIG, and if I ever do decide I need to MIG, I'll pick up a MIG unit then.

For $1500 street price or less on a new machine, I don't think anything beats the Lincoln Tig200. Used, I'd look at Miller, then Lincoln... just personal preference. Don't rule out ESAB either, but they seem to have great units or **** ones.

If you have the space, older units can be had cheap, I bought both the 250 and 300 syncrowave units for $900, still need to get a torch, foot pedal, and cooler, but the 300 should weld 1/2” aluminum.

I would agree. I regularly see 330 A/BP's for less than 500, and bought both my syncrowaves for less than $200. You have to be able to deal with large and heavy though. If you want one light you can cart to your buddy's house on the weekend, you probably want a new inverter.

The only thing to consider with the older, bigger machines is to make sure you have the capacity for their power requirements and the space in your electric panel for the 2-pole breaker. Those bigger welders will probably require a 50A or even 60A dedicated circuit. Even my SW TIG200 needs a 30A circuit. My garage panel is only a 60A panel, so I could run a 50A welder and the lights, but nothing else while welding... I really wish I had pulled bigger wire for a 100A sub-panel in the garage. There is no way I can upgrade it now.

I will not repeat that mistake on the next house. The next garage will get a 125A or 150A sub panel if local code will allow it off a 200A main. Otherwise I might have to go up to a 400A service for the house! I'd like to stay at a 200A service if I can so I can stay in the residential breakers and panels. A buddy of mine's dad installed a 400A service in his house and another went with two 200A main panels off one meter. Our local code allowed it. Not sure how other areas in the state or other states work.

Syncro300 needs 100a. You can do a dual lug 320a meter box and run 200a to house and shop. That is common and what i did.
