The local welding supply stores are awful, I am having trouble figuring out fittings for everything, I need to make a diagram of how I would like to do the plumbing, then figure out what fittings I will need. I thought things were somewhat standardized, but from the confusion they are having, sounds like everything may be proprietary between manufacturers. I will try and figure it out on Monday.

Very nice. Get a cover on those hoses asap!

They are sorta fragile.

Edit:. I'm clearly blind. Cover in plain sight. [emoji849]

I need another one for the air cooled torch, probably order a couple just for when I need another one.

I need to test out the cooler, but other than the fact that some coolant was spilled out in transit, it looks almost new.

That thing does look brand new. I'm going to work on mine next week. I'm focused on the garage door and going to see dad this weekend. Brother is in town, it'll be the last time we're all together. Kinda a bummer.

Try not to look at it from the perspective, think of it as great that you are all together. I am lucky my brother is 20 minutes from me, I spent a couple hours at his house tonight.

As for the coolmate, I just hope it works, if it does, I will be really excited and it will also feel like money well spent.

Have I said how much I hate cold nasty rain and the mud? If it's going to be winter, let it be winter. Global Climate Change. We should have listened.

Meh, that’s all garbage. I was complaining about not getting snow in Colorado anymore amd was thinking that Al Gore was right...and we’ve been getting snow now weekly. Now I think Al was an opportunist and managed to win the peace prize during a series of dry years. [emoji12]

The mentality and thought process that goes along with some people is absolutely mind boggling these days. I have some non hippy neighbors that smoke so much pot, I sometimes feel like I am getting high and I am over a 1000 feet from them. Then I have to deal with the hippy type when it comes to trying to site a tower, they are generally the hardest to deal with.

I don't get why Hippies would have an issue with your towers. A little mess putting them up, but once they're up, they won't bother anything.

It’s all about the trees, man. The trees.
And the birds that loose their homes. They loose their homes, man.
And the bees brains get scrambled by the microwaves. Their little internal GPS gets all screwed up and they can’t find their way home, man.

Hey, are you going to grow anything in that field off your access road ?
:wtf:

It was a good thing to have us all together. It went well.

Did you try out the coolmate yet?

Wednesday I should be able to test it. I bought a couple fittings and some clear hose so I can see the flow, I am planning on using actual welder coolant, but I can buy concentrate and dilute it, so I will start with distilled water as it is a bit cheaper.

The good news is those coolmates are pretty simple tools. They're just a pump, fan and radiator. Still made new, so parts are easy to come by if you have any issues.

It looks super clean in the pictures. Just make sure you keep the radiator clean. They have a way of getting all gunked up without noticing, and all of a sudden your cooler has almost no cooling capacity.

A shop I worked at bought a used Syncrowave, and the radiator was so plugged up from the PO never cleaning it that we almost boiled the coolant. The somewhat clear spot is where I wiped it off with my fingers. Ew.

+1 on the miller coolant. I need to get my Syncrowave swapped out. The PO used RV antifreeze, and while it works is definitely not the best.

Still jealous about the Aerowave.

The Aerowave hasn’t gained any traction yet, still have one resistor that can’t be identified, of course I haven’t been really trying to get info, been busy with some other stuff. I did buy a cord reel that has 50’ of 1/0 welding cable on it. I think that will make for a nice ground cable, just need to set it up so I can use it with multiple machines. Seems that it should be good for 100 feet at 350 amps, guess that will cover me pretty well.

Thankfully not, just for the shop. They do weld on towers, but I am not a certified welder. Besides, I am afraid of heights. ;)

At the shop for a bit, maybe even longer than a bit. Getting ready to test the Miller Coolmate. I still think the thing was just used once or twice, there is no sign of someone cleaning it and the only mess on it came from shipping. They didn't plug the input and output ports, then put it in a plastic bag, so when it turned upside down (and I am sure it did) the remaining coolant would dribble out, so the bag had some moisture in it when it arrive.

I am going to setup a filter that will be used to clean the coolant every so often, but the plan is not to have it in there permanently, if it clogs, it could kill the torches, plus the procon pump has a built in screen. I did buy a cool spinning flow indicator, the will be installed permanently, just have to wait for it to arrive. I was also thinking about a flow meter, but I think just seeing it flowing will most likely mean I am good to go.

As beautiful as the Coolmate looks, the pump is not pumping. I can blow through the system and get the water to move, but the pump doesn't do anything. I contacted the seller to see what they want to do, hopefully we can come to an agreement, then I can just rebuild the pump and that will be it, I don't want to mess with it too much until after talking with them. So much for my good deal, ebay will back me for sure as they listed it as used, so it should work.

I figured out the problem, makes me wonder what happened to do this, the pump is free, but the shaft adapter is broken. It is made of a phenolic material, most likely as a weak point, but I can spin the pump, so not sure what happened.

Of course when I was taking it apart, the last hose was tougher than expected and with everything wet, I lost my grip on the pump when the hose let loose. Pump went to the floor, dinged up the case and one of the elbows, plus I lost the spring for the pressure relief. Go figure. :(

Oh no. I just ordered a couple of those 50psi springs. Came from a pump rebuilder in Cali. Time to machine a pump adapter?

Things don't feel right on the pump, it has one consistent spot that it gets tougher to turn. I am thinking it needs a rebuild to make sure things are starting off correct. I am going to try and get some cash back from the seller to offset the BS and parts I will be dealing with. It was definitely used, my guess is it may have been a return or something. No matter what, they sold it as working and it wasn't. Based on the rest of the unit, I would prefer to keep this, I just don't want to eat all the costs. The seller would need to pay for return shipping as it is a clear SNAD and I am guessing it would be another $60 to $80 to ship it back. Replacement pump and adapter would be about $100.

I sent a good ten minutes trying to find the spring, with no luck. It was stainless, so not even a magnet was going to help. I found some great info on the Procon pumps, I am going to put it into a dropbox folder and post a link when I get a chance, it may help someone else.

Yeah, those procon pumps are cheap to rebuild. Wish i could remember who i bought the springs from. They were listed on the procon site as one of the national rebuilders.

The seller worked with me, so now I can get started on rebuilding the cooler. First thing will be to open up the existing pump and see if it is actually bad.

Local tower decided to try and touch its toes.

319c74b9fe9f0739ab614bcab2726923.jpg

All I can say is that I am dealing with T-Mobile and Verizon right now at one of my sites, they both did not do structural upgrades but did change out equipment on the towers, of course I am finding this out after the fact. Hopefully my tower will be fine.

WOW. How can that possibly be fine. Are the cell companies responsible for what happened? Or at least liable for repairs?

I don’t know what happened to that tower, but there will be investigations for sure, that tower is owned by a radio station and it is on top of a ski mountain. The insurance probably covers lost revenue, so the claim could be huge. If the carriers did something they shouldn’t have, it would be obvious.

Not mine, no liability, worked on it years ago installing some antennas. Total tear down, if an engineer signs off, the foundations would be usable.

The way towers are designed is based on ice and wind loads. Generally when you get lots of ice, you don't get lots of wind, this storm had both. With the added ice, there is a lot more surface area for the winds to act on, so something gave way, could have been x braces, then legs or it could have been just the legs being over stressed. You can see that it had issues in the middle, so that would be the area you would investigate.

HOLY COW!!!!!! Glad it wasn't one of yours. Do you think it's because the cell antennas have so much surface area? Do you have to figure out the wind loads? Or do you have an engineer do that? I hope your engineers are better than auto engineers (of which I am one).

It was probably 180’ tall, maybe shorter.

The engineers do all the design work, customers provide loading, then tower companies do the installation. When they design things it is based on something like 1/2” of radial ice and 120 mph winds, except that is either or, when they do the ice load, they do a wind reduction. 1/2” of radial ice adds lots of weight and lots of surface area for the wind to act on. As an example if you have 1/2” round braces on the tower and you get a 1/2” of radial ice, you brave is now 1 1/2” in diameter.

Hah just saw that story and came here to ask about it. That ain't gonna be cheap. There a passable road to the top of that mountain?

Mount Washington had 171 mph gusts yesterday all time record for February.
