Crazy things states make us pay. :(

Today I shuffled trucks around, then went to look at another knuckle boom, I have decide the one I have is not good enough for the new truck, the one I looked at has 32’ of hydraulic sections instead of 24’, it also has a winch and enough cable to be two parted and pick 8800 pounds. I need to get the spec sheet for it, since it is a newer design, I think it may actually be lighter than my current boom. The only problem is that it doesn’t have the last manual pull out to get it to 40’ like mine has, not the end of the world, having more hydraulic boom is much better than having the extra pull out section anyways.

Truck excise tax is set, glad I spent the time Friday to call around and get it figured out. Saves me a ton of money long term.

Now I have to get some tires for the rear of the truck and change all the fluids, there are a couple small leaks I need to look over, shouldn't stop the inspection, but I still want to try and fix them.

Strouty, maybe you shouldn’t clean up anymore, you’re making too much room for a fire department and crane service.:lol_hitti

You remind me of myself with the new shed last year, space to relive the shop and now it’s full.:shocking:

My company has some big *** lathes for sale.:lol_hitti

I do need to start culling the herd, I shuffled things on Sunday, everything fits, but there is no place to put the snow.

Top priority right now is to get the new truck registered and inspected, I got part of that done today, will need to go to the BMV main office to register due to weight capacity. I have several title applications that need to be done, so I might as well do everything at once, usually if you get there when they open it is smooth sailing, so I am planning on doing that tomorrow morning.

I am going to run and get tires and other trinkets now, need wiper blades, oil and fuel filters, some rubber seals for the air lines as well.

It's probably a good thing that I have no money, or I would be buying stuff up like you do. Your various vehicles are all pretty cool in their own way. And if you organize it you have plenty of room for a decent machine shop and wood shop. Good Luck on culling the herd. I know from experience it's never as easy as it sounds. At least not without losing (serious) money. At least I don't have to plan for snow down here.

I now have all the filter numbers, one belt PN is not visible, found out more about the engine. It is a 1988 L10 cummins with 300 HP at 1900 RPMs, should have 950 ft lbs of torque at 1300 RPMs and wants to be cruising at 1600 RPMs not at 2200 like it does right now. At least I can figure out a better rear ratio to use for the rear, also need to figure out what is the best ratio based on the future transmission gearing.

Local Napa is mixing some paint to match the frame, got filters and belts (except the one belt I couldn’t read) now I am headed to Freightliner to see about a few other things.

Apparently no one told the paint guy he was actually mixing my paint, pissed me off because not only did I pre pay, but I drove an extra 30 minutes tonight to pick it up. Now I have to go back tomorrow and pick it up.

Tomorrow is going to be a long day, gotta get an early start too. :(

Thanks!

This morning I got the tires for the new truck, need to come up with a name so it won’t be so confusing, paint is not available until tomorrow, so I bought 5 cans of various blues to see if one is close. I really want to just give the rims a quick cleaning and paint so they don’t look too out of place. I spent over two hours at the BMV, but got all my title applications and registrations done. $850 later I went to Wally World and bought $200 worth of oil and a couple cans of easy off oven cleaner. I am not pulling off the boom yet, I want a local wrecker service to check it out first, might be able to sell it and get help removing it.

I just pushed the Virginia burb outside (blasphemy!), felt awful doing it, but I need the forklift and I need room to change the tires and oil on the new freightliner, I want to try and get it back inside tonight, but it should be OK until tomorrow afternoon.

Unloading the tires and oil, then getting started on swapping things. Also need to figure out what paint is the best match and get the outer rimes painted up.

She fits through the door, getting to use my cordless 3/4” impact too, so far no problem.

I know my back is going to regret this decision, but I am going to try and change the tires on the two outer blue rims, I feel it will be better than trying to paint them with my spray cans.

That worked out awful, now my back hates me and I can't get the tires off, luckily I am not dumb enough to start with the ones that are ready to bolt to the truck. I can see why I am having trouble, but not much I can do about it right now. My bars are just that, big bars, I have a medium sized spoon, but it is way too small for these tires. I just ordered all the tools I will need to change 19.5, 22.5, and 24.5 tires on up to 13" wide rims. I am not breaking myself anymore, just going to mount the crappy rims with the good tires. Not even going to paint them, just going to roll with it. I almost can't believe I am doing this, it goes against everything I usually do, especially that perfectionist PITA in the back of my head. Anyways, I have sooooooo much to do, that I just need to get the truck inspected and then I can worry about making it look good.

Did I tell you my back hurts? :(

Hey Strouty, take a easy otherwise your back will hurt. MORE!

At least your trip to BMV went ok even with the money shelled out.

I am somewhat impressed with the 3/4 inch cordless impact gun....

I hear you on the back, that is why I just said efff it and mounted the rear tires as is, tomorrow will tell how bad it hurts.

The 3/4" impact was great, but it is heavy, especially with the big socket and 12.0 battery, I could tell I was working to use it. Will have to try it out a bit more, these were not rusty at all, so it may be good to a point, but they make a 1" drive version, so I can always step up to that.

The worst thing that happened today was that I found a truck that would have been perfect, literally would have needed almost nothing for me to put into service. Long term the one that I bought will make a much better truck, but it is still going to take a lot of work to get it there. I figure at least it will be the way I want it to be, big engine, rugged auto trans, all wheel drive, knuckle boom, fifth wheel, etc, etc, etc..........

Let the ugliness fly.....

I tried two of the cans of paint, no go on a match.

Then after installing the license plates I checked all the lights, one headlight had the high beam out, thought I was going to have to go to NAPA, but apparently the fire truck is already starting to pay for itself. Not only are the sealed beams the same, the entire headlight assembly and chrome surround is identical to the Freightliner. Good thing too, the ones on the Freightliner are pretty much toast, I had to use my special Japanese pliers to get the lower screws out. Swap the chrome for a better one too.

Then I decided to put the Virginia burb back inside, the orange forklift was outside, so I used it, worked very well, now I just need to cover the forklift.

Inspection is done, getting sticker put on now. Guy liked the truck and said he was amazed at how clean it was. He showed me a few things to touch up so that DOT won’t hassle me, figured I will fix those soon.

I sold something today!

I sold the old reel trailer, felt good to have it gone and to get a few bucks.

I also traded the boom on the back of the new freightliner, going to get some sand blasting time out of that. He also said he could help out with some painting if needed, I figured it was a good investment to give him the boom.

Then I think I got an air ride rear for the truck, looks like it will bolt directly in place of the spring hangers too. That deal won't be figured out until next week though. My tire tools should be in on Friday, so this weekend I may be swapping some tires.

That is good hear.

You have so many moving parts, I lost track, what is the next step?

Removing the boom is next, then I think I have made a deal for a better knuckle boom crane, so I guess I will need to pick that up afterwards.

At this point I have a lot of paperwork to catch up on, so things may slow down a bit. At least I feel like I have a direction.

I was looking at a tree today, one that had leaves changing from green to red/orange and thought, here it comes. :(

I think I will be ready, September is going to be a pain, lots to do on top of regular tasks and prepping for the white stuff.

I hate white stuff. Oh sorry I been lurking here for a few days. Started at page 1 will be caught up soon. I am going to start a thread on my shop and I thought I would see how everyone did it but I got stuck here. I lived in Chicago for 43 years, I hate white stuff

Thanks for taking the time to look it over, everyone is different when it comes to threads, I let it fly, good bad and ugly. I too am not a fan of the white stuff.

Here in NJ... I love watching people wig out when snow is coming.

On the flip side... I'm right on the ocean... storms/hurricanes get an organized group effort by most locals. Twenty foot tidal surges bring out the tough in many when you live eighteen feet above sea level. Thankfully... I'm 34 feet up. Someday it will be beach front tho.

To complicate things even more, I just bought another truck, not even sure exactly what it is, but had parts I needed, should be lots of good things I can rob off it. Then I can sell some parts to recoup my money. I think it is a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia, won’t know until tomorrow.

With all of the back problems you have had why even mess with changing tires yourself? Take it to a shop and be done with it and save your health for the fun projects.

edited to add I am not trying to be an *** or judgemental, just an observation.

I think with the proper tools, it won't hurt my back, fingers crossed. It all comes back to having to wait for someone to do it, I would prefer to be able to do it myself and not get stuck waiting. I have several tires that need to be swapped around and taking them all to a tire shop will be really tough and time consuming since I would only be able to do a few at a time, or set all the trucks up on jack stands.
