I think with the proper tools, it won't hurt my back, fingers crossed. It all comes back to having to wait for someone to do it, I would prefer to be able to do it myself and not get stuck waiting. I have several tires that need to be swapped around and taking them all to a tire shop will be really tough and time consuming since I would only be able to do a few at a time, or set all the trucks up on jack stands.

Wow.... another truck....... Maybe you should be a flipper or a dealer? :lol_hitti

I'm thinking a Unimog is really what you need..... Knuckle boom crane, tilting flatbed, attachment points at the front and rear...

It has some parts I need, I am fairly confident that for the price, I will be able to recoup my money, heck I may be able to use the cab on another project. I will post more details later today.

No thanks on the pink fire truck, red ones are bad enough.

No matter how much you break even... you aint getting ahead... time is money... your time is valuable. I always assign a fair value to my time. Travel time must also be compensated.

I'm sure you know all that but... I'm so seeing you at the event horizon of a black hole... really don't want you to go to far "in".

If I start speaking Latin, you know I went too far. (Movie reference)

There is a big portion of this that I find “fun”, so it is hard for me to put a coat on some of it. This truck will never make me money, but that wasn’t the point of the truck, it was about independence.

I forgot to mention that I weighed the new freightliner the other day, as it sits right now it weighs 20,500 pounds. I think when I get done, it will be about the same with the knuckle boom, hopefully even less.

Then when I sold the reel trailer the other day, the guy showed up with no pintle hitch, I have talked to him and he has bought other things from me, I loaned him mine, guess I should have taken a deposit, he was supposed to drop it off yesterday.

Worst part is I need it to move a trailer, hopefully he will still drop it off, but I won't let that happen again. :(

I am now setting up so I can make the stand for a golf ball washer for a family friend. I found a cool base for it, hopefully everything else will come together and it will work well.

Also learned that the electric forklift is not something to leave out in the rain, I covered the important parts, but water got into the throttle pedal and now it won't move, hopefully it will dry out, if not I am going to have to chase that tomorrow.

I ran across a guy today that knew all about the boat trailer and truck I bought. Said he wanted the truck and tried to sell the trailer for the seller for a few months, not one bite. I am thinking parts or conversion, don't want to waste too much time trying to sell something unsellable.

Went to buy an exhaust fan and ended up with a burb full of stuff, guy was cleaning house and I wasn’t sure what I wanted, so I took too much. ;)

Will be swapping dump trailers with my brother, his is pretty crappy, but will work for me, mine is nice, so he is paying me some money. Best part is I can still use the trailer. Win, win situation.

Removing the tires was so easy with the right tools. After I do some more, I will be able to do them faster, takes me about a minute and a half.

Hey Strouty, there is something wrong in that last picture you posted! I see a floor.

Glad to hear that you are working smarter in regards to removing the tires.

Trailer swap and money is always a good deal.

I can still see floor, but I am making a mess, got 6 tires and ten rims inside, need to dismount the ones I took off the fire truck, then I am going to try mounting a tire and see how that goes. I still have about a dozen tires to swap after I get these done, would have probably cost me a grand to do what I am doing, it is giving me the opportunity to learn a new skill as well. I figure I may still have to take the front tires over and get them balanced, but I have always checked them first, sometimes they need nothing.

I am getting excited about swapping tires and parts around, the fire truck already has studs long enough for all aluminum rims, but the best part is the disc brakes, can't wait to have a full disc brake truck, it just looks cool. Harder to change the rotors, but the pads are easy as pie.

Looks like my rear rims are narrower than the ones on the fire truck, front rims should be the same according to the door tags, but I didn't want to take those off the new freightliner yet, need to get the hang of mounting the tires first, otherwise I will have a lot of trucks that have no wheels.

The bigger rims and tires from the fire truck were a lot harder to remove, but I think I figured out what I was doing wrong, I will know when I try the next tire. At least there are only two of those, the rest are normal size. Come to think of it, the first ones I removed were actually smaller, low profile tires, so who knows, I may have more issues. I will figure it out at some point, probably about the time I am done.

Not going to lie, I am a hurting unit, definitely overdid the tires today, I just wanted to get to a good stopping point. I still have a mess to clean up tomorrow before we get rain on Monday. I found I need one more tool for mounting the tires, then I am going to need a bead seater to get the tires aired up.

I only have one good bar and a spoon, after the first tire it was obvious I need a matching tire iron. I am going to buy a bead seater, done the either and don’t like it, but would use it in an emergency for sure. And it made my lower back feel like jelly.

I figure that the investment I am making in the tools will be paid after I get all the tires and rims swapped and mounted, then they will be great to have around for future use. I don't want to become a tire shop, but it will be nice to know that I can change tires on my own, between the time and costs at a tire shop it will save me a lot in the long run, especially since I am planning on building up more trucks in the future.

So far I have purchased:

Ken tool blue cobra kit for $300

Ken tool 19.5 tire tools for $125

Ken tool duck bill hammer for $100

Tire lube 25 pounds (probably last me forever) $100

Valve stems $25

Additional Ken tool tire iron for 22.5 tires $60

Cheetah 5 gallon bead seater $170

So I am into this for about $880 and a half days labor fumbling as I learn. I know I will need a few more things, so I am figuring I will be at a grand for the tools. It would have cost me $45 per tire (local mount/dismount charge), plus I would have had to haul all the tires to them and that would have been multiple trips or a bunch of trucks on blocks or jack stands. So when I get done I will have mounted 20 tires and to do that I will have dismounted about 40 tires. So far I have dismounted 10 and I am waiting on the bead seater. Glad that I am doing it this way, once I have the bead seater, I think I can finish the rest of the job in a full day. This way also allows me to paint my rims without the tires on them, should make for a much better job in the end.

I am actually thinking tire cage regardless, but I have no interest in split rims at all, in fact I have been phasing them out as fast as I can. The new reel trailer has them, but due to the funny offset I will have to have custom ones made, at least that is what it looks like right now.

Tearing into the sandblast cabinet, need to get the good parts off, then get it put outside.

4b35971479d2c2888b2475d5e584b608.jpg

All I had left was some big front tires, they barely fit this direction, but they did fit, looked worse the other way.

The new crew cab needs a PMD, it tries to hit redline as soon as it is started, no good. I am going to shuffle some things around, then I can pull the PMD off the black burb with the exhaust issue. This will prove or disprove the solution, then I can get a new one coming for the crew cab. I finished the work that I started a couple weeks ago on Bev, now the coolant is topped off, the inner fender panel is installed, and the AC is topped off and blowing arctic air. Now for the tires in the shop, I think I am going to stuff some of them in Bev, easy to move and should keep them dry.

I need to change the oil in the maroon burb, TODAY, I am over my mileage again and really need to stop abusing it so much.

So it is a rotary pump that pulls fuel from tank? I am not familiar with why chevs would be different than any other idi.

It is basically a couple transistors mounted to a control board that tells the pump when to fire. They get hot and die, some last longer than others. They used to be really expensive, but I can buy new ones for $120 or less, decent ones too. I have not "fixed" one yet, but I figure I will eventually do the transistor replacement on some old ones.

And that was the problem, truck runs fine now. Going to order a new one tomorrow, one more thing checked off the list.

The jerk from craigslist that never returned (read stole) my pintle hitch is making my life hell. Now I have to buy a new setup, I had to use the new freightliner to move this tiny reel trailer because it is the only thing left with a pintle hitch. I hate people that do **** like that, I was trying to be helpful.

Getting tires and stuff inside the shop organized, have several things to go outside, a few for the conex, finding things that need to be sold, stuff that has been buried in the back areas hidden behind something else that I should have taken care of months ago.

Tires that are not mounted are all in Bev.

Here is what the PMD looks like, it is the black box mounted to the aftermarket heat sink.

Sometimes my reasoning makes little sense, but I think this one made good sense.

Just got the Virginia burb back inside, covered the orange fork lift better this time, hopefully no water issues, but I am not too worried.

I moved the blast cabinet over by the grinders, got room to move around everywhere, made more room than I originally thought.

Paperwork today, may try and gather up some 19.5 tires from Dad’s, he went to larger tires and his old ones are floating around still.

19.5s on the burb? Sweet! Jk. I have thought of moving to 19.5 on my truck though. Cheap and wear like iron.

They wear OK, my 22.5s wear like iron. The crew cab has the 19.5 tires, it is a 3500HD, but they meant heavy duty back then, the new HD trucks are not like this. It is basically an F450, has 15k GVW.

Strouty, nice to see some floor!

Sounds like the tire changing went smooth.

What was wrong with the white blast cabinet that you stripped pats off of it?

Thanks guys!

What was wrong with the white blast cabinet that you stripped pats off of it?

Nothing wrong with it, just incomplete, I plan on using the pressure system for my other cabinet.

Damn, you have done a lot! And you have a lot of floor space now, and tires! You and 86turbodsl have really been working hard!

We feed off each other. :lol_hitti

Now for the bad news, a truck that I wanted to buy a few months ago is back up for sale, the only good news is that it is fairly cheap. I may have to go and look at it this time assuming the seller doesn't flake out again.

I am now trying to get the logistics figured out for winter storage and parking. I have a few more projects that need to be completed before winter, but my priorities are all skewed right now. I just need to get the boom off the new freightliner and get all the tires swapped over, that will really make me feel like I have gotten something done. From there I will have to adjust things accordingly.
