Luckily my strap wrench worked to get the oil filters out, I still ordered new filter wrenches because there is no way the strap wrench would work in most situations.

Also found a decent looking diesel burb for sale, try and talk me out of it, I dare you. ;)

Got one belt changed and one belt removed, going to work on the front pump and hydraulics next. Also removed a ton of those wrist slicing zip ties that people love to create for the next mechanic, seems like a booby trap or something. A guy could bleed out with the right cut and some are razor sharp.

The shaft is bolted to the crank pulley and then to the pump, looks like the pump needs to come off before the shaft can be removed since there is no slip yoke to get it out of the yoke.

To trim zip ties, only two tools are allowed at my house. Flush cut dikes, or a razor blade. If I catch you using anything else, they'll never find your body. It's worse than using wire nuts, Scotchlocs, or solid core wiring (house wire) on anything automotive/tractor/motorcyle related.

I use a zip tie tool, it tightens and flush cuts in one pass, no sharp edges. I searched for a while to find a nice Panduit one for a decent price, last pair I bought was about $45.

Been removing bolts and hydraulics, still working, lots of bolts, lots of glue, tight fitting stuff, makes it slow going. Sometimes you can't get a bolt without opening the hood, so that makes things fun too.

Removed the two rams first

Then the wood

Next was the hydraulic tank, they used an air tank and made it work.

You can see the glue on the brackets, after unbolting them, you still have to break the parts free.

This bracket was bare steel from 1997, that sealant/glue is good stuff.

32f7208e53fbcd3a6ce4a806d9ed18ed.jpg

Prying off the drivers side bracket for the forklift, took a bit of effort.

614c270c3af1ef27e6d7fabc79b43953.jpg

It is on the floor, but I will either need to completely remove the bumper or jack the truck up to get it out of the slot they made.

9be8b08bde754c9c15b83705e1b5f9cc.jpg

The other side is harder, the hydraulic valve pack was interfering with bolts, but it was not easy to get out of the way, then one of the bolts stripped the threads so it wouldn’t tighten or loosen, had to burn it off with the torch.

fa90c60692a25fa5c5efddaf678cec75.jpg

1b83b5441ce33c430e155dbb944f2a14.jpg

Now I can weasel the hydraulic valves out while removing the bracket.

a8375230ab244042cee0324f73a8ea0f.jpg

Now I just have a dozen or so bolts to remove, probably just get this side down and call it.

I do want to drain the oil pan before leaving, no sense in having a mess to start with tomorrow.

The bumper was less attached than I thought, but it was a RPITA to get it off the frame rails, I still have a mess to pick up, just afraid to keep going, my back is pretty sore right now, but not too bad, don’t want to make it worse.

The oil drain pan is not perfect, pretty good, but I think two things would make it much better, first would be a momentary foot switch, so you have both hands all the time, second would be a good way to attach the hose, third would be another quick connect fitting so the drain hose can be connected back to itself, less mess. The hose was the only thing that got me, I removed it and tried to drain it into a bucket, but it got away from me and spilled some oil on the floor.

a15a9c0c7a765f3875df0aec96a46b15.jpg

Anther 20 uses and it will feel like it is paid for. ;)

I will say it was perfect for both the oil and the hydraulic system, hardly anything on the floor compared to what usually happens when you deal with 20 gallons of oil from multiple ports and hoses.

I think the last thing I would change is the screen top, it needs to be recessed and maybe even have a deeper area to put the filters, I had to tilt them on their sides to wheel it out from under the truck. Still a big thumbs up from me.

That should free up a lot of weight on the truck also. Thanks for taking so many photos along the way as it really helps us follow along.

I am trying to take pictures, sometimes you just get going and the camera can be a pain. With my back sore, I am a little slower so the camera is a nice break.

86, this is the small one, wait until OMO is in process.

That would be nice, but I do not, worst part is the tub at our house is so small, I can’t even soak in it. :(

Worth the $$
After we lived here about 15 years it got a small leak i couldn’t find

Bought a new one . It’s nice.
When my back is stiff or hurts, soaking in the hot water for 20 minutes makes a huge improvement

I hurt my back one time and I took a few days off work and soaked in it every couple of hours all day for a week and It really helped

And if you get a doc to prescribe it , it’s tax deductible.

One of these days I will have a hot tub.

Need to get parts so I can finish the oil and belt change on Perk, have a couple errands to do as well. Also waiting on Dad to find out when the excavator is going to the island, supposed to be this week. I will get pictures if I end up being involved.

Hope everyone had a nice Holiday weekend, mine turned out pretty nice.

Today is a less of a win, at least it feels that way, I got most all my parts, but I had to do some office work, now I am fully involved, so it may be a late night in the office. Hopefully I can get Perk somewhat back together tomorrow.

Back is doing well, definitely on the mend, still taking things one day at a time.

Been dealing with DOT trying to figure out if I really need a number or not, looks like I am not in commerce and may not be part of their control, would be nice for sure.

My GF just tried to weld.... with the oven.

Sounded like she had a nice arc going, at least she tried to unplug it. I figure the element is the issue, but I am not sure she will go for a repair, it is the second oven that this exact issue has occurred while she was the operator.

Welding in the kitchen aside, I have spent some time on the phone with DOT and FMSCA officials and they agree that I am not required to have a DOT number nor do I need to follow their rules. However, the "rules" are subjective when it comes to an officer and they have to make the call, they do have to "prove" that I am in commerce, worst case is I get a ticket and then fight it in court, of course that wouldn't help me if I am in Arizona when I get stopped, hadn't thought about that. I am pretty good at tap dancing, going to give it a shot and see what happens. I am willing to bet that there will be a test sooner or later.

That's good news for you Strouty.

Now that some stores are opening up, might be a good time to list those theft tags that you have on a pallet....

No letter, the officer needs to "prove" you are in commerce. I am removing the lettering from Perk, once the state is back open, I will transfer ownership of the truck to me personally and then reregister. My insurance agent has added my personal name to the policy and that will cover vehicles that are in my name or the company name. Still need to register for the correct weights and get a commercial sticker, also will still get a DOT medical card. I think those things will at least show any DOT officer that the truck dn driver are at least safe.

I am sure there will be a roadside argument at some point with a DOT officer over the definition of commerce. I will have to buy everything in my personal name from here on out, might have to pay cash for most things, will definitely need to setup a couple new logins for some of the auction sites I deal with, they are in the company name right now.

Why not letter the doors with "Private Vehicle -- Not For Hire"?

From the discussion that I had with one of the head DOT inspectors in Maine, he said that they pull people over with lettering like that because they usually think someone is trying to cheat the system. He asked me all kinds of questions, in the end he was convinced that I would be fine as long as I keep things the way I discussed. I told him if he saw my yard, he would understand.

The worst part about today is that it is 90 degrees and humid.

I am over at the SG picking up some supplies, I can see I need to spend some time cleaning and putting things away. Also need to get some things listed for sale, would be nice to get rid of a few pallets worth of stuff, I know if I spend a couple days sorting I can make a huge dent in things, just need to find the time or make it. ;)

Back in the 70's when I first started towing race cars with a fifth wheel. I pulled into a truck inspection. At the time did not know a recreational vehicle did not have to stop.
I lucked out the guy that inspected me was a race car guy and he spent about 30 minutes pointing out where I was not legal via DOT commerce rules. 55 gallon drum of racing fuel was a no no the gas welding setup and so on.
so I never did that again

DOT only chimes in when you have a vehicle or combination of vehicle and trailer that is 10,001 or greater and you are involved in interstate commerce. Only real exception is if you are carrying hazardous substances, at that point any vehicle involved in interstate commerce needs to have DOT numbers. Each state is also different, some require a DOT number for intrastate commerce, some require them over a certain GVW no matter what.

It is soooo humid today, I am dripping and the floor is slippery. Wish I was at the SG, the AC works and the fans keep the air flowing. I tried the AC unit at TH and it just circulates the air, no cooling. :(

I guess I will have to figure that out, no way I will survive the entire summer like this. ;)

I just got the final belt replaced on Perk, took forever since I couldn't get to the small drive shaft that comes off the crank, in the end, it was a slip joint, but the slip portion was hidden up in the crossmember and covered with grease. Nothing was really easy about this, but I figure things will be different when I put the Detroit 50 series into Perk, so might as well get the stuff out now since it is useless for right now. I am about to put oil back into the engine, get it started and see that everything is working, then I am going to help a buddy with his truck.

AC in a shop? I could only wish. Still, I have plenty of fans, so it's usually ok, and nothing I do is related to a business.
