Strouty, thanks for the pictures. It's always cool to watch a tower go up or down. Neat drone pictures. Some drones can do station keeping. You send it up to watch, and when the batteries get low, it comes down to its personal helipad.

The top section could probably be hauled together, but it would be easy enough to disassemble.

Bad news on the drone footage, while I was recording it freaked out and told me I was out of space, I had to try and redirect it to put the video on the memory card instead of internal storage, something happened and I have two video files that won't play at all. I am trying a couple software fixes, but I am not holding my breath. I may be able to jump on another tower installation and record things once I understand how everything works. Having only 15 minutes of use before today really wasn't the best way to do it.

I tried a bunch of programs and tricks to repair the video, nothing worked. I will keep the corrupted files, maybe someday I will be able to fix it. Definitely going to get more practice with the drone and recording things before I do anything else that is a one time shot. Worst part is I have about 30 minutes of video that can be summed up in three pictures.

The picture you posted yesterday looking up from the ground while the top section of tower was being removed really put things into perspective for me. The men standing on the tower really blew me away as this whole time I was thinking this tower was maybe 6ft wide like bigger version of a tv antenna on a house. WOW, now things really make sense on why you need all of your big equipment.

Most everything I do is heavy and big, this tower was relatively small, you get a 350’ one and the base section might be 70’ from on leg to the next.

Got the silver cylindrical item to the top of the Hill. Now I just need to figure out where it is going.

It takes a lot to set up a operation like that, it don’t take much to shut it down with a miscalculation.
Got to make use of the crane, but safely and not in a hurry.

How long do you think it'll take you to finish the clean up at this tower site?

I am not able to just go at it all at once, probably be done before Thanksgiving. In actual days, probably about 7 to knock down the tower sections so the can be hauled off, dig out fence posts, move the smaller building, and break up all the slabs. Probably have a load of trash to deal with too. I am going over today for a bit, I want to get all the coax out of there, that tends to disappear first once people know it is there.

I need to figure all this stuff out, would be nice to do something like that for sure, might have been pretty boring, lots of waiting around.

I have created a new "short" list of things to do.....

Perk needs hydraulics completely redone, wireless remote either fixed or replaced, wire and plumb for Tru Hitch and dump trailer.

Dump trailer needs tires, suspension bushings, and a new tarp.

Tru Hitch needs new tool boxes, chains need to be made up and stored better, and hose reels installed for air. Long term stuff for Tru Hitch is repack leaking ram, add winch and pulley, plumb hydraulics so I can swap between the two winches.

OMO is my winter project, need to get things stripped off, then start building it the way I want.

Strouty you have a daily driver for the winter? Seems like since you got the F550 the 'burbs haven't gotten any attention.

Yeah, the maroon one will be the daily, but it does need some work. I have some plans for it, I want to have a plow on it too. I had been waiting for the 550 to be done so I can drive that while I tear into the burb, since it is finished, I don't really have much of an excuse now, do I?

Tonight I need to get the shop on the Hill cleaned up, then I can have access to the lift, that is definitely going to be needed for the work I have to do on the burb, besides the shop has been a mess for far too long. I have a couple important errands to do this morning, but after that I think I can escape to start removing some of the coax at the tower site. Tomorrow I have to go to my Buddy's junkyard, I bought some barn doors and a bumper off a really clean suburban. Also have to grab a couple door panels for the 550 power window/lock upgrade project.

Drying off the tarp so I can fold it up. It is the thicker HF one, was actually impressed with it, probably half price of Home Depot too.

How would you say that crane is sized for that truck? Just curious if a smaller unit would be as handy.

The knuckle boom on Perk is actually oversized for the truck, I was supposed to have another 3’ of wheelbase IIRC, but it was also designed to be installed on a truck with a gas engine, so I have plenty of counterweight when working over the rear 180 degrees. As far as having a smaller boom, as long as you can get out 20’ you should be able to do a lot, much shorter than that and I think it would be almost a waste, but this would also depend on what you think you are going to be picking up. A newer unit would weigh less and probably pick more, but they get expensive quick.

I am still thinking I may end up with one that goes out over 100’ and has a grapple saw on it, then tree work would be easy. I see them used setup on trucks, usually in the $200k range, but you would be able to charge $300 an hour, so only 667 hours and it would be paid off!

And holy cow, all kinds of wires, cables, and other towers to contend with. Definitely need to be on your toes for that kind of work. Good job.

Lots of wires to contend with at that site, they are actually laced through each other.

Went to the scrap yard, they are actually paying more for the coax than last time I sold it. 90 cents a pound. They said the hybrid cable would be the same, they reduce the price because of the fiber optic line inside. I have a feeling it may be worth it to just have it gone at 90 cents a pound though.

They can’t afford them. Seriously, you can reach over a house and cut an entire tree top and set it out where the chipper is. Many times you can’t get anything in the backyard due to septic tanks. They are very common in the wealthier areas, but I know it would catch on once people started to see the benefits. Some people will always be too cheap, but you get into the Manchester, NH area and they are more common, Suburbs around Boston too. I am just thinking ahead of the curve.

I am over at the tower site, removing a bunch of coax and hybrid cables. I don’t want to leave it laying around, there is about $3000 in scrap, maybe more, I haven’t weighed the hybrid cable yet. The regular coax is about .72 pounds per foot and there is about 2400 feet. More trailers for me!

Started trying to count using the screen write feature on my Note phone, even with it kept loosing track with a 2 yr old in the room. If my rough count is right it's in the area of 200 pieces

Well there you go! I've never seen one, so I don't think they're very common in Australia.

yeah i had to look it up too, its a dangle head like some feller bunkers use mounted on a boom. Interesting, concept. Still requires truck access aand either alot of hand work after or another couple 100k for a whole tree chipper.

Thanks for the info on the crane. How important is the winch line vs just a hook on the boom?

The winch line makes it so you have both a conventional and knuckle boom crane, not very common, definitely not a deal breaker, but if you could find one I don’t think you would regret it.

Going to the scrap yard this morning, then I want to try and get the rest of the coax off the last three sections, would be perfect to take it all in for scrap today.

Later I have a trailer to pickup, they were messing with the brakes on it, I figured that would be my job, but I am not going to argue with them. Hopefully it will be ready this afternoon.
