That's one of the few sports I wished I could have really tried when I was young. I did the rollerblades, sport climbing, and water skiing. I wish I could have gotten into that and surfing.

Try metal skate wheels on a board. Neighbors dad thought he'd show us how to board in the sixties, didn't turn out good for the next 6 weeks! For him.

I never understood the appeal of having wheels on your feet. I could always get hurt standing in my shoes

I was that kid who always fell off the skateboard. It would always snag on a small rock and send me flying off it.

I couldn't jump bikes either. No roller skating or ice skating.

Good thing I picked up drinking beer early, saved me from being a social outcast.

I probably would have become a pro skateboarder, but I had to work all summer for my Dad, I tried to skate when we would go out of town, but the guys thought it was funny to lock my board up in the truck. So essentially I would only get to skate during the school year. It was frustrating because some of the friends that I started out with skated all summer and they just kept getting better. I was alway able to go big, but it also made me mess up my ankles pretty bad. I could ollie (kind of levering the skateboard) onto a full size picnic table and then do a flip trick off the other end. I was not so good with handrails, but I could ollie up the stairs when most people couldn’t hardly get down them. I rode grind king trucks with A1 wheels, my favorite board was a Matt Hensley king size, it had about two extra inches in length and because I was bigger, it allowed me to ollie much better than on a shorter board. I still have a couple boards and I am sure I could still ride and probably even do some flip tricks. I haven’t stepped foot on a board for a couple years, it is addictive and if I get hurt, well it takes a time more time to recover, plus I always get hurt. Fond memories for sure, I used to skate with a few pros Andy Macdonald would show up at the local skate park frequently, before he was a real pro. Some of my skate buddies became pro for companies in NY and Boston, then they left for California. Another friend that was older and built ramps for a living, he was good friends with the famous bike rider Dave Mirra (RIP). We went to the X-Games when it debuted in Rhode Island and got to meet a bunch of the greats, it was always a blast. I miss skateboarding. :(

On a GJ related note, the last box of fittings was about the same as the others, plenty of good pieces to make it worth the $20.

I completely understand your sentimentality. I miss the rock climbing and Blades. My joints don't. Before the X-games, I took my son to a national sport climbing event in Pontiac, Michigan. We got to see Katie Brown and Chris Sharma do their thing. Top athletes are so amazing to watch. Kudos on the box. Are you ready for the storm?

As ready as I can be, at least the ground has had a chance to freeze up a bit, should make plowing better. Is this one getting you or is it to far East?

They don’t know how things are tracking, they have changed it a couple times. Looks like probably anywhere from 6” to 18”. They are calling for 8” to 12” in my area, but if it shifts just a little, it could be a lot more of a lot less. I figure the SG will get the most as it is the farthest south, but the Hill. Sometimes gets hit hard due to elevation. It isn’t supposed to start until 2 AM, so at least it will be a nice messy morning commute for everyone.

I am supposed to get new studded snow tires installed tomorrow morning, could make things faster or make them slower. I have an appointment at 9 AM, fingers crossed.

When I looked yesterday, we're clear to the weekend. That's a good thing, because the Old Mule is still over at my parents place.

I am putting them on the maroon burb, the old ones still have some life left, but I think they should go on the plow at the SG, they will last a long time just plowing the yard.

Trying to move that hydraulic tail trailer, not going too well so far, had to chase down fittings, no big deal, just time, now it looks like a line has blown, not sure if I can do what I need to. Plan is to hook Perk up and try to lift the trailer wheels off the ground, then pull it forward while the wheels are off the ground. This should get the tail out straight, then I think I can clamp some steel to it to keep it straight and lift it off the ground, then I need to get the brakes freed up.

On top of all this, my brother just called and says he wants to bring the FWD to my shop now, like literally right now and he needs me to follow him in case there is an issue. I may just bring Perk, then we have a big truck and air if needed. Regardless, I am going to do it, then I can have it done before the snow flies.

He doesn’t want it anymore and I am going to restore it.

And it is a net zero drop off, the old junk F550 that came from Dad’s collection is gone. Not the one with the crane, that one is still around.

I had to look it up to see if I was correct about that being a Dodge [/Fargo] swing fender cab. There are a few for sale as well:

As for the divergence from Strouty's adventures of recent and back into the past for just a second I'll stick to my unicycle, skating [I'm better with wheels than blades but can(~ish) both] and skip the skate board and skiing adventures completely. And I'm sorry your not 8" taller than I and only 4" taller but at this point you do have 100#'s on me, old age and sugar hasn't been kind to me, gone is the 46" chest and 33" waist they seem to be heading to the same number now. Doh! Harry

Re the todo list software. I also use the apple reminders app, I have a list for each main location I work at. A long term todo, and a short term todo. The short term todo list has grown to be too big, hovers around 70-100 items and I get overwhelmed.

My solution has been to sit and write a post it note while I eat breakfast with maybe 5 things on it for just that day. I enter new things that come up in the day into the phone lists but don't look at it during day as I'll get distracted or discouraged.

The other helpful thing that has been so tough for me as I also troll for deals, I have to stop buying projects. From working with another friend who has better project management skills, its a gut punch to me watching him "overspend" on things, but he has stuff done and gone off his to-do list while I've fumbling and squirming for years sometimes to get it done cheaper.

Example, my self-propelled sprayer had a wheel motor disintegrate. I diagnosed it going through the planetary and the braking system, tore down the motor, priced up parts, choked, trolled eBay for a Eaton 74418 or similar cross, travelled to hydro shop 2 hours away trying to get rotating group for it etc. Better than 100 hours total into it and I still don't have a working sprayer. He has similar problem called dealer, 3000$ later he's up and running, total of 10 mins of his time invested, and a 3 month warrantee on the work. Machine was back in operation asap. Mine missed the season. I end up with so many "open" projects it dilutes my mental energy and can't sledgehammer new stuff that comes up like he can.

Truck is in place for now, has some serious leaks and one is a tire, will have to address that as I can.

Yes on the Dodge cab, even has a Chrysler key.

Still don’t have a list of trucks or acronyms, someday.

Tonight was a bit messed up, after dropping off the FWD, I went to help my Brother with something and we stopped to pick up dinner, after that his truck (just put a new Ford 5.4 engine in it) started acting funny, then started losing power. No CEL, no overheating, no loss of oil pressure, we were about a mile from his house, nursed it back, no dripping or leaks underneath. Then my brother says turn off your flashlight, as soon as I did there was a glow. Both exhaust manifolds and two of the cats were glowing orange. There is this third cat or something and it seems to be clogged, it rattles when you kick the throttle and hardly any exhaust was coming out the tailpipe. Luckily we new a guy that had one of these same trucks, same year, same engine, but it was being used as parts. He had the complete exhaust system! Over we went after grabbing the plow truck from the Hill, my Brother has contracts, so he has to plow tomorrow. Finally we get to the parts truck, look underneath and the part is not there, there is just a straight pipe, come to find out the truck my Brother has is a California emissions not the standard Federal one so it has extra smog ****. So he is SOL on a replacement for now. He is going to try and cut open the one that is plugged and see if he can clear it out so it can at least plow tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I had to go back to the SG to get the rims that I need for the studded snow tires, ended up only being two and they were way too rusty and crusty for my liking. Ended up pulling the wheels and tires off the Virginia burb, they were only placeholders anyways, one is decent enough I may save it, but it isn’t a size I use, so might not be worth it. After that, I got home and had to cover the snowblower that won’t start and cut apart the wind damaged fence in the backyard, it was precariously leaning on the crab apple tree and I didn’t want to damage the tree.

Fun stuff, now I get to go to bed so I can wake up and deal with snow, makes sense, it is technically my birthday now. I hate snow. :(

Have to say this thread has been a treat whilst I have had insomnia! Gone through the whole lot in a week or two and finally made it to the last page.

Congratulations Strouty on keeping sane every so often I was wondering if we would be seeing some backhoe work and then a new concrete slab appear in front of the shop for more than 1 person in the stories!

Now who do I see about the RSI in my mousing hand?

Thanks Kay, good luck with the storm.

Thanks Rick, you shouldn’t hardly have to do anything for this one.

Speedracer, sorry about the insomnia, but glad you stuck with us, it is definitely a two steps forward, one step (sometimes three) back type of situation. As for the hand, in these parts they call them occupational therapists, not sure what name would be given over the pond. The specialist I saw was considered an orthopedist that was experienced in surgery.

The snow has definitely started here, but it has not picked up yet, luckily (?) it is so cold that the snow is light and fluffy. I don’t think we will see any power outages or damage even if we do get a foot. Unfortunately it will be harder to keep in one area as it will be prone to drift and won’t pack when plowing. I should be able to try out my cordless snowblower and see how it works, my gas one is not starting still, after the storm I will have to dig it out and see what is going on.

Hope every in the storm’s path has a safe day!
