Call me crazy but instead of the time and money getting the jersey burb you could have either fixed or replaced your air compressor, parts washer, or both.

Strouty, what compressor? I recall you getting two not to long ago, 1 working the other non-working? I am sure there is more than 2 sitting around.....

I am new here

Welcome to the club....

The compressor is one of the pair that I bought, they both work, I need to plumb up the electron hoses for the VFD, as they are three phase. I haven’t had the ambition to do it, honestly, I am a bit nervous, I have only worked with rotary phase converters and the VFDs seem like Voodoo magic. The parts washer should be easy, it needs to be cleaned out, then new fluid, which I have. The pressure washer is one of those projects that I started and didn’t finish, now I don’t remember exactly what was wrong. I think I was upgrading the fuel filter because it wasn’t firing the burner. My friend has a guy that he uses for pressure washer repairs, so I may have him come look at both of mine, the gas powered one has an issue or two as well.

As for why I haven’t done this stuff yet, I think a big part of it is/was my Dad and the possibility that I would no longer be involved with things as of next month. I wasn’t even sure if I would be staying at the shop on the Hill or not. At this point I feel confident he and I will be working together for a few more years and that is slowly changing my outlook on a lot of things. Hopefully as the weather warms up lots of things will start to fall into place. This week is a bad start, yesterday got to almost 25 degrees with crazy wind chills. Today it is about 15 degrees so far, but it should be a bit warmer than yesterday. Then Friday cools off again with a 50% chance for snow, after that the trend is for mid 50s during the day and mid 30s at night, I can live with that.

The locking bar took a bit of effort to get the broken bolt out, but it is out.

Had to weld a washer and then a nut to the flush stud, took three tries and I had to heat things up really red with the torch.

Victory!

You seem to have more success with this method than i do. I'm not sure it's ever worked for me in fact.

I did have to do it 3 times. The key is to set the washer, then start the weld on the center of what is left of the bolt/stud, then melt out to the washer, otherwise the washer will disappear before you get any penetration on the bolt/stud. I do the same with the nut after I tack the outside of it. Also you don’t need to be perfectly leveled or centered, this is more about the heat transfer than anything. I had to heat the actual bar pretty good before it would back out.

Well Strouty it does appear that you and your dad are doing better, what changed for that to happen? I am very happy that it did.

I am sure someone on here that follow along on your trials and tribulations can certainly help you set up that VFD. I still have no clue how those things work, Duker tried to explain it to me once.

Cas, I think Dad finally realized that without me he was going to have to do all the things he doesn’t want to do. He still doesn’t like the costs associated with my services, but he also realizes the benefit of having someone available with my skills essentially all the time.

The VFD should be straight forward, but that doesn’t make me any less nervous. It was $1200 and if I destroy it, well that would not be good. ;)

My friend found a deal on some oil that is being clearanced out (not saying where yet, I don't have all mine!), going to end up with close to a hundred gallons of heavy duty 15W-40, maybe more for about $500, less than half price, I like that!

Dealing with the trailer tires now, going to run a bead of white silicone so rust doesn't start to form in the groove where the center and outer rim parts meet, it eats at the powder coat and then they look like *** in no time.

How many air hose reels do you have? I see 7, but I am sure there are others tucked away somewhere.

Well I am glad that your dad has realized how valuable you are.

Don't blame you for being cautious about your VFD, I would be too.

Not all of the reels are air, I would have to look at them to tell you though. Again, I haven’t set them up because I was a bit uneasy with the situation. I think I am feeling more comfortable and if things keep going well, I will start doing more to the shop on the Hill.

Picked up the first round of oil, so far it looks like they have located about 80 gallons, we will see what shows up. I picked up 11.5 gallons this morning, then my buddy had 22.5 gallons that I got yesterday. Should be perfect, then when I drain the oil out, it gets used for heat next year!

We will see, I know I will be annoyed that I have to store it, but it ends up being just about $5 per gallon and that is not easy to pass up.

Having all kinds of drastic thought running through my head, burbs, shops, junk, spring. Got notification that they will be having the spring auction, but it will all be online bidding, don’t think I will partake, the things that I usually sell do better with in person bidding. With that said, I do need to do a really big spring cleanup, I don’t think I will make it through the summer without doing something.

My top things to be done as of right now are:

One functioning back up Burb

Perk’s transmission swap

Air compressor/VFD wiring

Air compressor plumbing

Parts washer cleaned out and setup again

Pressure washers fixed, both of them

Water tank for Salvage Garage

There are about a hundred or two other things that need to be done, but those are higher on the list for multiple reasons.

I agree on the auction, especially from a seller's standpoint. I just don't think the auction frenzy where the bidders loose their minds would be created on line. Will there be any pre sale in person inspection?

I am sure that there will be an inspection opportunity, but I am one of those normal bidders and rarely do I ever get caught up in online bidding the way I do in person. I am not willing to chance it, just not worth the effort on my end. I will be selling a few key items on Facebook though, I need to move some stuff for sure.

Today has been all messed up, been chasing T-Mobile, they want to add generators at two of our tower sites, but they sick knuckleheads on me that don’t understand that I am not your typical landlord. Then they try and tell me how it is going to be, except I understand our lease and know what they can and can’t do. Plus T-Mobile is actually in breach at one tower and I have threatened to throw them off the tower. I am thinking it might be the best solution long term as they would still have the lease under sprint on the same tower and that is a much nicer lease.

Forever, depends on the company, we write a lot of them, or rewrite a lot of theirs. It is all about leverage, if it is a u inquest site that they can’t do without, we can make things work in our favor. If there are five other towers on the same hill, we usually take the lease as is.

I’ve found that items that are useful to many and fit in a pickup bed do better in person. The buyers already have the sunken cost of driving to the auction. It’s no big deal to buy something, toss it in the bed and drive it home. Online means you have to then find time to drive to the auction house, pick it up, and drive back home.

When selling more expensive / specialized equipment that has a current commercial market, online bidding or hybrid bidding gets more money. With proper marketing more that know what it is and what it’s worth are going to see the auction, bid, and drive the price up. I’ve scheduled my tasks around having a time slot to sit in the shop (or in my service truck) to bid online for wanted equipment or vehicles. The boss wouldn’t be happy if I billed a day of my wage and fuel to travel, and hang out at an auction for a “might buy”. There’s never been a question about the hour I sit bidding online, followed by a half day picking up said gear if we win.

Spot on. My usual sale items are what they consider smalls, it is the stuff that people get caught up in last minute because they see something in the pile and think they have to have it. I will bring 30 or more lots of items, there isn’t usually one item that does crazy money, in fact most of the time things that I think will sell high don’t, but everything else seems to make up the difference. On the buying side the justification of “I can’t leave without something” absolutely exists, it happens to me too. ;)

It is really cold with 20 MPH winds, no fun being outside. :(

Looks like I am going to be ordering some more of the Lista storage wall to use up at the Hill. I am sure they will have to make the stuff and it will take a couple months to get my order, but at least I will get the ball rolling.

Will you be putting what you have in it now or will you be buying stuff to go in them?
Is there a real benefit from having them compared to other like products?

Cas, I am always buying things! In this case, it would be for current supplies, but I am sure there will undoubtedly be some new items too. The Storage Wall Lista sells is kind of like pallet racking, it allows for infinite (maybe not that much) adjustment of any combination of drawers and shelves and it keeps things very compact. The ones I would be buying are just under 10' tall (that is the tallest they offer), so it really uses the vertical space along the walls. It is by no means cheap, but in the end it can be used at the Hill, then moved to the Salvage Garage and used there if things don't workout with Dad. The last time I bought my small setup it cost about $3700 and pricing has increased since 2015. The quantity I am ordering is much greater as well, so I expect to spend $10k and that is a lot, but it will be well worth it in the end, especially considering it will make the stupid space totally workable from the floor to 12' up.

The amount you have surely you class as a Lista distributor so should get a discount!

I wish! Still waiting on the pricing, I had them price out some deep drawers as well, I have never bought a new drawer, only the pull out shelves. I will be curious to see how bad they are. In the end, you could spend far more on one snap on tool box (and I have!).

No doubt it is a lot of money, but in the long term plan it is worth it to me. I am making really good money right now and I am sure when I get a bit older I won't want to spend the money, it only hurts a little right now. ;) I have lived by the mantra "buy once, cry once" and I have only regretted things a few times. Besides you can always make more money, just ask the feds.........

Over the next ten days I am going to try and make a dent in a lot of things, I might actually get a few things done. ;)

The two garage bays need to be cleaned up

I want to get the trailer with the flat tire fixed so I can haul it out of the tower site

I would like to move the scissor lift out of the quonset hut and up to the shop

I would like to move one of the smaller tool boxes to the Salvage Garage

I would like to haul three of the Lista cabinets from the SG to the Hill

I would like to get rid of all the 7.3 Power stroke parts from the shop

I need to order new lights for the shop at the Hill, then I can remove the old ones and bring them to the SG, double upgrade!

There are probably about a hundred other things that will pop up along the way, I will have to look at new things as they arise. This afternoon I need to go to the accountant with my GF, she has a new business and wanted me to sit in so I understand what the accountant wants, plus ask lots of questions. Then I will be back at the Hill to get more done.
