I am not sure what happened, but it is not a fresh cut, but it looks like a knife was stabbed into it. Regardless, it is just for show now....

The trailer I sold at the auction is now priced at $3k, down from $4k, I almost feel bad, but I have also been there. I think he will be lucky to get his money back, even with the trailer market being strong. After fees and taxes he was inches away from $1,800, big hurdle to overcome for sure. When I bought it, it at least had good tires and rims on it and I didn't pay anywhere near that for it.

I went back through and found when I originally bought the red trailer, funny how I remembered paying less for it, I still made money and I got to keep the tires and wheels.

Here is the new trailer, going to do a full assessment tomorrow.

The trailer has some clear issues, and some downfalls, but overall it is a decent looking trailer. Instead of using the correct hitch, they welded one on, also the front frame has some damage most likely from jackknifing the trailer a bit too far. The worst issue to me is that the trailer is 8’ wide, if I keep it, I will need to widen it to 8’ 6” and rework as few other aspects of it. It is also 4” taller than my other trailer, so we need to see how much work both need and decide what is going to be the better trailer when I get done.

When I bought the yellow one, I paid $2,000 the cheapest tilt I could find was about $7,000. I have seen some cheaper, in the $5,000 range, but they need almost as much work. The brakes do not work and the lights will short out the entire truck system, so they need to be completely reworked on top of all the suspension and deck issues. We had figured $2,500 in parts and another week of labor, but this was a guesstimate.

The black one cost me $3,000 and still needs suspension work, it had good tires and the brakes worked, I did have to mess with the lights, but not more than a few hours. I spent some time on moving the lunette eye to make it level behind Perk, so I am not sure I would count that. Then I cut the springs on the ramps so they could move closer together when loading Clark. That trailer works well, but will probably cost me several hundred in parts and several hours of fabrication.

The red one was $1,200, the deck is decent, the tires are almost all good, the lights will work with an hours worth of time and a new light. The brakes are unknown, but I will mess with them tomorrow (maybe tonight), but I think they are going to work fine. The suspension needs work, but far less than the other two and then the lunette eye needs to be replaced as well as some repairs to the front I-Beam. If it was 8' 6" wide, this would be a no brainer, my buddy may have a good solution to widening it, but in my mind it would be easier to start fresh and sell the deck, it could be used as a truck body or for another trailer. I figure it would bring $500 to the table.

If we could make the red one into the tilt trailer, that would be worth the effort, but I have my doubts, that tilt trailer is built very heavy duty, as far as I remember the frame is a lot bigger. One thing I hadn't thought of before this brainstorm, it might be possible to swap the black trailer's deck with the red trailer with a lot less effort than anything else, this would still allow for two trailers to be sold and then I would have a great long term deceiver tag trailer when I got done. I still want a tilt, but I can wait a while.

Man, I am so annoyed with sellers right now, I just want a simple detail that should be in the ad anyways, can’t get that info and I want to give them $12k. :(

I am going to look at another trailer, not exactly what I want, but it is local and I know the dimensions. It is over budget and the seller isn’t willing to budge on price, so it will hurt pretty bad for a while. It isn’t a fifth wheel, so I technically lose the deck space of the other trailer (the one I want), but this trailer is a tilt trailer, so there are upsides to that.

Fifth wheel is nice for how Perk is configured right now, but if I add a removable bed, fifth wheel won’t be as good. Also if OMO (big fire truck) ends up being a rear mounted knuckle boom, the fifth wheel trailer will be useless. This not perfect trailer, has 20’4” of flat deck (8’ 6” wide) and 6’ of shallow beaver tail, no ramps, this allows for a shallow tilt angle. I don’t know, the market is so bad right now, seems like the good trailers are gone ASAP and everyone seems to want a tag style versus a fifth wheel style.

You can't always get what you want...

It actually may be better than the other trailer in a few ways. Hopefully it won't be fully down pouring when I go to look at it. I may cancel and just figure if it is gone, it is gone.

Here are the two trailers in question:

Tilt deck, but tag trailer (bumper pull). 2015 - 20 ton - $16k - Local - current inspection sticker

This is the one I want, fifth wheel, but no tilt deck. 2012 - $12k - 25 ton - 8 hour round trip - no inspection

The 5th wheel looks like the deck is the same width as the duals on the truck. That should give an indication of how wide it is.
The OMO project is still years off. By then you may be thinking in a different direction with the trailers.
I think you should still try for it. I’m not sure you’ll be happy with the shorter tow trailer.

I'm with Jake on this I don't think you'll be satisfied with the short trailer. Call the people that have the fifth wheel one or keep looking.

Those ramps lack the double hinge that allows for the ramps to lay flat and some fudging of the ground level so that the ramps stiffleg don't hit the dirt and won't allow.......
You know what I mean, that type of ramp is fine for flat even ground. My Kaufman g/n has them and it can be a pain in the ***.

I stopped myself from even looking at the tilt trailer, I knew myself well enough that I would try and make it work. As for the one with the ramps. I am fine with it as is, assuming it is 8' 6" wide, but I am not sure on that. As Jake mentioned, it looks pretty even with the rear duals, this could be close to 8' 6" as the truck looks like it probably has dual aluminum rims. I know six inches doesn't sound like a lot, but when you are loading a track machine that is just over 8' wide, it makes a huge difference.

As for why I need a trailer, the current trailer has bad suspension components, basically it all needs to be cut off and new brackets need to be welded on, totally doable, if I only had time.... I have been limiting my trips to weekends or back roads and that is a real PITA, I would prefer to have something that is inspected and will not get me in trouble with DOT.

I like your thinking. Wait for the right one. It may take longer, but it'll be more efficient.

There are options between you fix what you have and you buy something new and broken in a different way. If you are looking at spending $12k on a trailer, I am 100% sure there is someone who will fix it for you for less. Hell, I'll fly out there and do the work for $16k.

The biggest issue is finding that someone and trusting them. All the people I trust are buried in work right now.

One other thing, the trailer that I "like" has a deck height that is insane, 39" loaded. My current trailer is 32" unloaded, guess that scrubs that off the list as well. Honestly I think I am going to have to either have one made to my specs or build my own. Another option is to build the trailer that uses the tru hitch as the fifth wheel neck, kind of like a high tech detachable neck trailer. The main issue with that is the weight, it always comes down to the weight........ Well, and width and height........

With your current issues with weight, I don't think I'd use a trailer in combination with the tru-hitch. If you're honest with yourself, I don't think you have the time to build one. If you don't have the time to fix the current one, where would you find the time to build one from scratch? Either farm out the repairs, wait until the right one comes along, or wait until you have most everything cleared off your plate to get to this one. Nice thing is that most of OUR items can sit without much degradation.

Not trying to make you feel bad, but this is the most logical thing to do.......
Previous versions of Strouty would have already bought both of the trailers to make them work.

Great job sir

I'm kind of in the same frame of mind. I'd love to get a bike again, like an old Buell Cyclone. One just came up for sale in one of the two colors I want, for a reasonable price, within driving distance. Hard to tell myself to walk away.

I have been looking at a few other toys, but I know I don't need anymore toys or project toys.

I am buying an engine for Benson (the new forklift), going to pick that up tomorrow. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but it is a thing and I would like to try and get the forklift working sooner rather than later.

How 'bout some more Suburban content?

On a related note, all this talk of 6.5 diesels had me looking for one locally. Actually found a clean 3/4 ton truck with one for $1200, but reverse didn't work. Someone beat me to it; I was second in line.

Talking about Burbs is boring….

;)

I have to get my act together, my list of pre snow stuff is getting longer and I know my time is getting shorter, plus we only have another week before the clocks make it dark at noon.

11am Central Time. :)

I actually thought you were going to sell a bunch of stuff so you wouldn't have as much to shuffle around.

It actually takes time to sell stuff, I really got hosed due to the auction not taking the smaller things this year. I do have a plan, next week should see some action on that front, I would like to be “snow ready” by mid November, even if it snows before that. ;)
