So now I am having thermostat issues at the Salvage Garage, I had noticed that the NEST was showing "offline" frequently, but I had just added a new timer to shut off the modem and router for 10 minutes every 24 hours, Spectrum seems to frequently go down and without a power off things don't reboot well. I cracked up the issue to that, well I am here now and the NEST is not working at all, I just turned it to heat manually and it says it is heating, but the furnace isn't doing anything. I have a feeling that this is a problem with the NEST itself, it is an old one and it was dropped once, so the adjustable bezel doesn't work right, my guess is that it may have given up the ghost. Going to order a new one, then at least I can actually adjust it locally, rather than being forced to do it with a phone even while standing in front of it. I figure I can test a things easy enough to confirm this, but I have had issues with this one before and it is one of the first NEST thermostats ever made, I upgraded the one at the house and this was from there.

OK, it wasn't the NEST's fault, not completely anyways, the furnace needed to be reset on the burner, makes me think that the thermostat may have done some short cycling or something weird, it is functioning properly now. Still don't know why it was "offline" as the computer was still fine. I was also forced into the Google app, the NEST version doesn't allow more than three locations (homes), the Google version offers five and I need four currently. I am still going to get a new thermostat and this one can be a backup.

I had a Nest thermostat in my previous house. It had a mind of its own and we could never seem to tweak it enough to keep the house comfortable. I happily left it behind when I sold the house.

I have had them for years and I am just learning how to use it, all you need to do is make it dumb, then it works just like it should. The main reason I like them is the remote access, second is that they look cool. ;)

Well, bad news for Benson, the John Deere engine won't fit and trying to modify things will be a losing battle, the rear leaf spring bracket, frame, and counterweight would need to be modified significantly to make it fit. Guess I need to find a tape measure next time I go looking for an engine. In my defense, I bought both the engine and the forklift from the same people and they had bought it for theis exact purpose, I just never checked things out before buying everything. I feel like this is a teaching moment, except I also feel that this has happened to me before, so maybe it should be a smack in the head moment? :(

I am going to put everything on hold for a while, just the Blue Burb is going to move forward. I am so scattered, it is getting scary even for me. As much as I want to start buying pieces and parts for the “next” project, I can’t do it, I need to have a more focused direction and right now I have no ability to focus. Time to take a break.

That sounds like an excellent plan Strouty. I'd also add no more buying until you get your storage systems installed.

I feel your pain. Same thing happened to me yesterday. I have an F250 in pieces in the garage, a Stihl 038 Magnum in pieces on the bench, neighbor wants me to fix his Poulan Wild Thing and it's not a quick fix, and then the Stihl BLK (1950's era chainsaw) that I bought as a running saw is having issues and had to do a partial disassembly on it.

Too many things in pieces, no room left to work. Need to spend today putting something back together.

It has been suggested before..... even the best jugglers can only have a certain amount of items in the air before they start to fall and clobber their heads. Nothing but smooth sailing wished upon you.

I agree with you on getting the Burb done, it will make it feel worth it and you need it. Like others have said concentrate on the shop and your storage, get it organized and your other projects will be much easier to finish. Take shop tetris out of the equation.

I am seriously considering buying a NON Burb DD, I have been eyeballing Honda products for a while, I like both the Element and the Ridgeline vehicles. It might make sense to have something that will NEVER be the project to drive, that would cut things down to normal repairs and maintenance, not crazy upgrades or wild dreams.

Perk can still be run as is, I do need to install the fender extension and it would be smart to put the new hood on so I can actually open it up, might just do that and start thinking harder on what's next. I still would like to build a decent 4x4 truck, but now might not be the right time. :( I do need to get all my parts in storage so they are safe and ready to go, so my storage system will need to be worked on for sure, honestly we all know there is no way I will stop buying things until after it is setup, right?

My Dad had a Ridgeline that he bought new and it was a good truck for him, but I hated it, but only because it was ugly and gutless.

A good friend who's a great mechanic has an Element that they bought new many years ago. Lots of trouble free driving, and you can carry a fair amount in it.

A nice, reliable, no nonsense dd would change a lot for you. Being able to get from point a to point b without constant stress and drama would do you a world of good. It would calm down your life a lot. More time for projects, for fun. You can put the time not spent each year mucking with a dd into assembling the storage, sorting and storing your parts and burbs, then have a usable shop and actually have fun working on your stuff. Do it!

First, as far as the Benson and JD motor, I was asking it was time to see them sold. As far as getting a smaller vehicle, would that even work for you. I constantly see you wishing you had a bigger vehicle, or having to make multiple trips. Would something that small work for you?

In reality the need for a larger vehicle is not too important, the need for something that I can drive while I fix/build the things that I "like" would be a better idea. The Element is probably the best substitute in my mind for a Burb that is reasonably attainable and has AWD, need that for the Hill. I also don't mind them too much, the Ridgeline seems too much like the burb size wise and I think I prefer the covered rear of the Element more than the open bed.

As for selling things, maybe, maybe not, I don't want to be too hasty with Benson, the rest of the forklift is in great shape. I have done some more research and it looks like the gasoline version of the engine that was in it has the same block and internals, so I am going to call a couple places that sell the Waukesha engines and see what they have. If I could build the original engine again for under $5k, it would still be a good deal and in the end I would have a very nice forklift. The John Deere engine could be used in the skid winch, then I could sell that for far more than the engine alone or the skid winch with a seized engine.

With my current situation, I had been used to having two burbs all the time, but this fall caught me off guard and I didn't have time to get the second one fixed. I spent a lot of money on the Blue Burb thinking it was going to just be my DD, but instead it turned out to be a problem child project, I am doing more to it than just the basic repairs, whereas if this was something like the Element, I would just fix what is wrong, no mods or extra bells and whistles because it is an Element, not a Burb. I hope that makes sense? It was like that with my Volvo XC70, just did the repairs, at least until I had to trade my labor for repairs and parts, then I did more stuff to it than I normally would have, but it was either that or not get anything in return for my labor (long story).

When winter sets in, my other vehicles are not really usable all the time, at least I don't want to drive Perk or Bev in the slop, during the summer I would gladly just grab Bev and go, not in February though. All it take is a little snow and Bev loses it, plus I can't get up the driveway at the Hill. This is one of the reasons I want a larger 4x4 truck, then I can still get up and down the road, right now the Hill might as well be an island.

Unfortunately, the last year of production for the Element was about 2011. They are extremely versatile units…..but finding a nice, non-rust example is very difficult now. If you do find one, they are pricey. I do agree with you though, as I use the hell out of mine, and plan to keep it going for as long as I possibly can.

All of that makes sence, that's the way I look at my superduty, I dont want to chip it or install a winch or anything more than stock maintenance, it's just a DD. I've gotten a lot of the extra stuff sold at the yard sale organized a lot of my (stock), I need to get rid of one more car then I will have pleanty of room to play with my trucks. I plan on having a truck project until I die so it's not something that I'm looking for the end.
You have a good plan.

There is one that is really nice right down the road, but it is white, I would prefer a blue one, but it is a 2010 with 138k, they are asking $11k and it isn’t unreasonable, it has a warranty as well.

The prices have shot up recently for the good low mileage units……but I guess everything has gone up. I really enjoy mine, and I bet you would too! Just make sure it’s AWD. I’d still like to find a manual transmission one.

Ugh. Those things are so ugly. At least they are generally reliable. I'd offer to get you a big discount on a Hyundai but that went away with the pandemic.

I think the ugly is what I like. I have been in one before and it was easy to get in and out of, much better than a car. I know you can still put a full sheet of plywood in them and that is probably the biggest plus for me. The rear is actually taller than the Burb too.

I am going to try and find a lower mile newer one for sure, there is a 2006 that is gray for about $7k and it has 140k. I would love to find one with under 100k.

The Blue Burb is almost running again, have to adjust the timing one more time (hopefully only once). The "NEW" oil pressure sensor that we changed because it made sense to change is bad, or the engine has a new problem with low oil pressure, go figure. We are going to relocate it so it will be easier to change in the future, also adding a port for a mechanical gauge.

I have a grease gun hose out of port under intake for my oil pressure sending unit, then a tee and 2 sending units. One to run fuel pump relay and one for dash gauge. Not sure what year blue burb is?

Are you saying you can fit a full sheet of plywood in a Honda Element? In it's original 48 x 96 format? I can only do that in a Dodge Grand Caravan with the rear and middle seats folded down into the floor.

Apparently I screwed up on that statement, they will fit, but at an angle with the tailgate open, or in more than one piece. ;)

I actually thought I read that they would take a sheet, but nope. :(

Walrus, the Blue Burb is a 1996, and the grease gun hose is what I was thinking, we talked about a hydraulic hose, but the grease gun hose is all ready to go.

You don't have the issue with fuel pumps that OBD 1 trucks do. Hope you get that baby going today.
