If you have to dig at least there isn't much frost. I don't think there is any here in my driveway. Kind of amazing considering its almost january. I see lakes that are still open.

Tonight the GF says her check engine light is on, so I put the scan tool on it, cam codes for variable timing, I check her oil, then proceed to add 4 1/4 quarts of oil. I told if if she wants to get rid of the car there are other ways to do it.
With as many vehicles in our fleet, and since I don't drive over half of them, I'm trying to get my kids to listen for the lifter rattle. With the Orphan (Saturn SL1), that doesn't work. I just tell her to check the oil at least once a week.

I told her once a month was the minimum, but she was checking it at every fill for gas, then she stopped. I actually thought she had the oil changed when they did the inspection, but apparently not, so now I will have to do that next week. If I didn’t have a waste oil furnace I would probably just change the filter, there couldn’t have been much more than a quart of the old oil left.

As for the digging, the frost will be gone for sure, Wednesday is supposed to be almost 60.

I am off to get my Brother’s chipper so we can finish cleaning up the bottom of the Hill. Spectrum has still ignored my request to put the line back on the pole, they keep sending a “tech” out and then do nothing about it. I am getting mad, if it wasn’t my internet, I would probably cut the line and let them sort it out.

@Strouty, I would call their 'new' customer line and ask how to cancel. Sales people tend to have some influence over the service people.

I see you are hiding the logs in the woods. Are you concerned Dad will want them added to the lumber mill pile?

Luckily most are too short to be any good or rotted in the middle, but yes, they are being put way out back. I have two or three that he will get to let rot in front of the saw mill that doesn’t have an engine anymore.

We had a problem with city techs ignoring a situation here. A call to their legal department pointing out their ignored unsafe condition & the injury it might cause got immediate attention. Apparently sometimes lawyers have influence on the techs. It might be worth a shot.

With the amount of timber around you wouldn't a replacement engine come in handy with that piece of equipment? Or is that piece of equipment in need a lot of TLC in addition to an engine? You have sure made some really decent progress in months of late! Keep it going but remember to not exceed your limits as down time isn't productive. (y) Harry

I had a branch hanging on the power line to my previous house. I called the power company and they didn't care about it at all once they found out the power was still on. I believe they finally came out and removed the branch after months.

A silly question. I thought Maine has lots of snow and cold? Strouty is talking about temperatures in the 60s in January. Here in Minneapolis it is 34 degrees today and that is a warm day for late December. Temperatures start dropping again starting tomorrow.

I don't know Strouty, with today's pricing that is "pine GOLD" right there, I don't like my job either but $$$$ talks [and I can't afford a whisper!] while Bull $#!+ walks. YMMV +/- Harry

I heated the home I'm in for 31+ years, foraging for the wood at least half of those years and getting semi loads the other years (a 10 cord half semi load would last almost three years). I quit about 2010 for good. I miss the heat, but the rest of it (my neighbor referred to it as my "hobby") I do not miss one bit.

The neighbor did that starting about 6 or 7 years ago. Put in a 500,000 Btu wood boiler for his house and shop. He's about 80. he and his wife spend literally almost ALL year cutting wood to feed that dragon. He bought a super fancy 20hp log splitter and a big new holland tractor with loader to support all that cutting. I can't believe he wants to spend his sunset years doing that all the time, but whatever floats your boat i guess....

Happy new year!

I've heated with wood for 30 years, the key, small tight house and small tight shop. I have installed two ductless mini splits in house and today I am heating with them. Shop heats with solar and wood stove when I'm out there. 3 cords for both is all it takes. No way would I want a 500k btu wood boiler, that thing must consume some wood. I will say its by far the cheapest way to heat in Maine

I am having an issue with my right elbow, same exact issue I had with my left one a few years back, surgery fixed it, but it was 8 plus weeks of recovery. I suspect that if I get things rolling now, I may be able to get it done and recovered before spring. We will see how things go over the next couple weeks.

I am going to try a few things first, I already have a Doctors appointment in February, so if it doesn't get better by then, I am going to start thinking about surgery, I know that worked on the left arm.

Been doing some paperwork, also need to make more food for Chuck, yesterday was moving day. Apparently the liter box was where the bed should have been, so that was where all the blankets went. I had to swap out a new box and move the old one, but Chuck slept in there last night instead of the "old" spot. Even after moving the liter box, it still got used, so there is some recognition for sure. I have to cut up some more 8" PVC to make a few more tunnels.

I really wish I could just concentrate on one thing at a time, but I am being pulled apart by all the different directions I have to go.

OK, I am headed outside at the Hill, I need to get some stuff done before it gets dark, having been sick has made me all messed up and I have felt like **** on a couple of the nicest days of the winter, I am feeling a touch better and I need to take advantage of the 50s during daylight. We have two more days that are warm, then the temps will be back to almost normal, still no snow, and now essentially no frost. This makes having a broken excavator really annoying. :(

Got one thing checked off the list, added 50 more. :(

The seat has been driving me nuts, you almost fall out of the machine. The control lever needs to be fixed, the heat needs to be cleaned out and hooked back up, then there are several hydraulic lines that need attention. I don’t know how long it will be before the ram gets done, but I hope to fix most of this stuff and do a full service to the machine before I use it again.

And to top off my afternoon, my GF calls me and tells me that the “No oil pressure, pull over safely” message came on. She said she pulled over, turned the car off, then restarted it and got the same message.

Wait for it, wait…..

Then she drove home. I am pretty sure the engine is junk now, I have not heard it in person, but over the phone things sounded really rough.

I don’t think I will be fixing it anytime soon, probably going to make her buy a new car, hopefully she at least learns from this. Or maybe even better, it will all be a simple issue and the car will be fixable, doubtful. :(

Other than removing the ram, I haven’t done anything else except get bad news from my GF, I wanted to get over to the SG so I could move some things around, but I think that is going to be a first thing tomorrow ordeal now. They keep changing the forecast and I would really like to get the pallet racking loaded up and bring the steel for the gate and racking roof inside. I feel like everything I do is a day late or a dollar short. :(

She is not the first or the last that does/will do something like that.
I did wonder how the engine survived running with so little oil in it a couple days ago when you topped it off.
I've told my wife to check her oil regularly, each time she refuels, but know she doesn't do it that regularly. Her latest car (2018 Mini Countryman) doesn't even have a dipstick anymore, you need to drive for around 30 min and then with the engine still running you can the level by selecting it on the onboard computer. TBH prefer a dipstick on a car.
