"Cool" thread

couple of mine.

That fan in 2nd pic! I used to have one just like it; inherited from uncle-in-law but had to sell it when we moved from MI to west coast back in 1998.

Man that fan was the best; moved a ton of air and also amazingly quiet because of that unique ducting design. When I worked as a auto tech I used it all the time in my bay; other techs were way jealous.

Do you have a better pic of it? What's the make/model number?

My Dad passed down this floor fan to me after I built my garage. Not sure what model it is, but it's made by Westinghouse. I think it's a "Riviera" model from the 60's, but that's just a guess. It has two speeds and works great.

Stuart has a nice version of my ugly garage sale fan:

Doesn't work. Power/speed knob gone. Turning the switch "guts" with a screwdriver still doesn't power up the fan.

Most of it is intact. The motor spins smoothly. I plan on breaking it down, removing the old paint & surface rust, repainting it, and rewiring it. Might need new brushes, but I'll know that once I get it apart.

I paid the $20 sticker price, but got them to throw in some decorative planters the wife wanted.

Love the look of these old vintage fans. Still researching this one. I think it's earlier than 1961 due to the red badge on the shroud. Probably mid-late 50s.

2manytoyz, I collect old fans. That one is likely from the early 50's but it's hard to tell. We use a switch from Ace Hardware that was still available the last I heard. Here is the info Ace Rotary Switch, part #30743.
Those fans are not the easiest to tear apart. The Stator is pretty well stuck tight in the Housing. Some of the Oscillator Housings were Pot Metal and will shatter if too much force is applied. If you tear the Oscillator apart, there is a large flat screw on the side. That is secured with a very small set screw under the screw that secures Oscillator Top. Remove the screw and look down the hole and you'll see it. Many people have tried to remove that large flat screw without removing that set screw and ruined it. Once that flat screw is removed the Gears can be removed.
Those are great fans, very quiet and they move a lot of air. Be careful not to mess with the Blade because they are very easy to get out of balance and very difficult to get back into balance.
Hope this helps!

John,

VERY helpful info, thank you! I'll probably put the fan on the bench and give it a look-see this weekend. I'll also go by Ace Hardware and get one of those switches.

WOOT!

Not really a "shop" fan, but my bedroom fan.

Not too bad for 30 I think it was, a can of spray paint, some grease, and elbow grease.

Yea... well I first came across this thread a couple of years ago and I bought a couple of old fans. I kept me and my son busy on days where weather didn't permit us going out to work on our projects in the garage.

Long story short.... we are at 13 fans so far. :scared:

Here are a couple of pics. This could get as bad as our car addiction...

Now that this forum has been restarted, I wanted to show off a home made shop fan that I made from a 1960s house exhaust fan that I found in a dumpster. The motor worked when I got it home bur I rebuilt it anyway and replaced the belt. It runs at a slow speed and moves a lot of air very quietly. BTW: I have several fans pictured here on past pages.

I've got two old fans that I picked up cheap a couple of years ago at a garage sale. Neither one worked and I didn't have any luck with a new cord or bypassing the switch. Are the motors on these worth repairing? If the motor itself doesn't seem to work what generally goes wrong with them, the windings themselver? Someday I plan to pull them apart farther to see if I can figure out where the problem is.

My Bride and I went to an estate auction a couple of months ago, and yours truly got a little carried away. There were 80+ antique fans, and I ended up expanding my collection by 23!

I already had several, including a vintage Vornado which still had the original price tag. So now I'm going to have to get my office in the barn finished so I have enough room to display them, as i'm running out of room in the house for them.

The amazing thing to me is that all but a couple work great. I'm still looking for a cassock style like my grand folks had, and I'd love to find one like rshadd's-just way too cool!

I'll try to remember to send pictures when I get the office done, hopefully yet this fall. Thes old fans are addictive.......

Danver,

1. Did you check the motor windings at the motor?

2. Did you chech to see if you had any resistance between your motor windings and the fan ground?

I haven't done anything beyond putting power to it with a new cord. At that point they got tucked away in a corner somewhere until I have some time and a place set up to work on smaller stuff without losing parts.

Now I'm crying. I just moved and had a collection of 15 fans of various sizes. One was a GE pedastal fan which had a nice cast iron base.

I was in purge mode and sold 10 of them to an antique dealer for $60. I got most of them 10-15 years ago when they were either free or $5.00 at yard sales.

I wish I had kept more. I regret it now. Oh well, back to the hunt!

Finally got these going this weekend, they make a real difference in the shop. I think they turned out pretty good, started out with a pair of freebee fans that my brother-in-law pulled out of a house he is renovating.

Hi guys, late to the thread but thought I'd make my very first post here. This is a great thread, fans are a reat economical alternative to cooling the shop, garage, or basement, and I've been collecting vintage fans a little over two years. At the time I only had 2, now I have nearly 30. You guys have some great old fans.

Hi 1/2 cup, thanks for posting. Didn't expect an answer so quick. I recognized that Elcon as an Australian fan, or at least, one readily available in Australia at some point in time. That's a great looking fan. I couldn't have identified that a couple years ago!

Nice album and nice fans! I have a G.E. similar to yours. I'm trying to get the attachment feature to work for this post. I had it set to browse but I chose the wrong file, when I went back it wouldn't go back to browse. I think if I wait a bit I can get it to work. I'll try anyhow.

That's a super nice shop you have!

Tried to get the attachment to browse and tried to insert the URL but it didn't work. Some boards are harder to figure out than others.

Tried once more to upload an image, still didn't work. I give up.

I have a smaller one in my basement shop that's non oscillating. When the kids were growing up they use to giggle and call it the finger chopper.

I think the pin has been unscrewed from the pull on he oscillating mechanism so the only thing this does is sway about 40 deg and spin the blade nearly silently but move a reasonably large amount of air.

Help!! I pick vises, while at a sellers home he trots out this monster, a Fresh'nd Aire model 26. Runs great, 3 or 5 speeds. All original. Really cool piece. He's asking $250. I have seen these all over the map in value. Can anyone advise a fan newbie?

I have one of those, it will put out some air and sounds like an old WW2 biplane taking off. I used mine until last summer when the motor started slowing down and it started to get hot. There is a guy here intown that can rebuild them, and I also need to know the value before I commit to the repair.

So this year I told my wife I wanted a fan for my Garage for Father's Day. Then I saw this thread and had to have one. My wife told me to just find one and buy one. So I found this one in pretty much perfect original condition on eBay!
Emerson Electric Model 79646-SA. 12" blades, 3 speeds, and oscillates. It was $68 or so shipped. I think I will eventually replace the cords on it but it runs so nice and it's so quiet as well.

I ordered the cord kit for my identical fan.

Available on ebay in your choice of colors.

Yeah I saw them and will be ordering one soon but it seems to be in very good condition. Although,
It's probably better to replace the cord sooner than later and prevent any issues.

I need to figure out where I want to mount it now. Might be time to start running some more electrical in the garage.

Funny I came across this thread, I just recently saw an old Emerson electric one on craigslist & have been debating on whether or not to make an offer, but I love the look of the refinished ones!
