Greetings all! I figured since I've been pounding the search button here for a while now that it was about time for my first post.

After 20 years of running the rat race in the city, the missus and I were tired of the traffic, sirens, noise, lack of privacy, and general attitude of most high strung metropolis dwellers.

For 15 of those years, I ran a high performance/race shop that focused on production-based sports cars; the overhead was getting pretty out of hand however, so I shuttered the place about a year ago.

I doddered around doing some custom work on the side, but kinda felt like I was spinning my wheels... until about three months ago when a close friend approached us and asked if we would be interested in his ranch waaaay outside of town. Something about getting married...? :) I offered my condolences, and promptly started loading up our stuff.

The property has a small cabin (~750 SF) that we now live in, which is great... but it is also equipped with a sweet 26x48x16 pole barn that is an open slate on the inside! A decent amount of space but not too big, lots of windows and potential. Just when I thought I was out of the business... this made it a no-brainer.

00000302.jpg

The view coming up the driveway.

The old shop that I rented was quite a bit larger (~7500 SF) but I'm much more interested in continuing with my custom work as opposed to running a full on race shop with staff and whatnot, so this is a perfect opportunity. Really just enough room for a couple of cars and all the equipment I'll need to do anything to them.

Like an operating room... for sports cars.

Having never worked with a pole barn, Garage Journal has been an invaluable resource. Just seeing what everyone else has been able to accomplish has been fantastic and inspiring! I'm really motivated to get this place outfitted and operational!

I've been working on it for about a month now in between getting other things up to speed on the property (cabin is wood heat only and I've been on overtime wood pile duty) so it's been a bit slow going, but now that the weather is starting to cooperate, I can focus my efforts on the shop.

That's my story thus far; here's some pics.

00000303.jpg

From the outside...

Inside with overhead door and 13x16 slider door...

00000369.jpg

...and the other side.

020150217_1831341.jpg

Uh oh, snow's starting to come down.

020150217_1834351.jpg

A nice shot of the inside with a couple of cars in place.

020150218_145337.jpg

OK finally time to get to work. The trusses are 8ft apart which kind of limited my options for a ceiling. I was able to source some foam panels that were repurposed from a building that was torn down; got a great deal on them and worked well with the existing spacing.

020150312_110819.jpg

Starting to lay the panels in place. My idea was to make it lightweight, simple, and inexpensive so it's basically an industrial sized drop ceiling.

020150316_180406.jpg

Another angle of the panels. I also got the upper section of the walls framed and insulated.

0323151319.jpg

Aah, finally starting to come together... and what's this.. LIGHTS?! Every O.R. needs those...

0323152034.jpg

Here I have the ceiling almost completely done; there are a few panels and another light assembly outside of the shot that aren't in place yet because I still have a big pile of stuff there that needs to be moved!

0323152035.jpg

One last shot of the front lights. I was concerned that the black color of the foam panels was going to hinder light output, and I'm trying to angle them so that they will direct most of the light to underhood activities, but they seem to be quite good about putting it everywhere. In that regard, I'm quite pleased.

That's all I have for now, hope to have more here in a few days. Cheers!

Very cool shop! with such high ceilings have you thought about some form of Mezzanine to double storage space?

That is an interesting layout, I love the overhang and I second the notion of a mezzanine for extra storage.

Any pics of your work from the race shop?

Love the barn, love the M3, and good story so far!

Please be careful using that propane "mushroom" style heater indoors, they are a carbon monoxide producing machine.....should be not too terrible given the volume of the space, just be careful.

WTF? is the deal with the window layout? Your buddy must have thought he was an artiste.

Anyway, looking good. Congrats on cutting the cord to the city. Love to do that myself. And if I had a buddy like yours, I'd be outta here.

Awesome place, I'm in. What part of the country are you in? Your profile pic looks like turn 6 at Grattan in Belding, MI.

Good eye! I'm about 30 minutes southwest of Indianapolis, but have had plenty of track time at Grattan... one of my favorite tracks!

Very cool shop! with such high ceilings have you thought about some form of Mezzanine to double storage space?

Kinda sorta... the shop is only 26ft wide so it doesn't leave a lot of room for a deep mezzanine. I'm getting ready to install one healthy shelf though, check the pics below!

It looks promising. Also love the m3. Anythibg done to it?

The M3 belongs to a customer and is largely stock for now... but he has been talking turbo. I like that idea...

Your guess is as good as mine, I asked and he said "I like windows" LOL. I'm all for the natural light coming in from the South though. My old shop didn't have ANY windows :)

Not a ton of progress today, had some running around to do and I'm working on it alone. Still, I was able to get the North garage door wall framed out:

0325151957.jpg

I also started laying out my plans for the Big **** Shelf ("Mezzashelf"?):

0325151957a.jpg

The idea is to run a big perimeter shelf around the whole front half of the shop. See the recessed groove between the top and bottom frameouts? That's where the back end of it will be supported. The front will have diagonal bracing from the shelf to the poles. 2x10 construction, probably about 4 ft deep. Just enough room to put some lightweight shelving up and get a bunch of stuff off the floor. I'm interested to hear ideas on this before I go buy all the stuff!

And finally, a couple pics of the cabin. Yes it is small, but we'd been on a huge downsizing trend the last few years in an effort to be more "liquid" in case an opportunity like this came up.. lucky us it did! It's super cozy and all of our stuff fits:

0325151958.jpg

0325151959.jpg

The guy likes windows :) He was a bachelor for 12 years here so it was in... erm, well it needed some work. Little Mama has some before and after pics that are quite a turnaround, maybe for another time!

I'll post some of the race car and high performance stuff when I can, all of that stuff is on the shop computer which is stashed away in the garage haha.

Thanks everyone! This is still a project in the works, would love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Cheers!

Keep in mind the amount of light that shelf will block, or plan to add lights under the shelf if you plan to work under there. I like the shelf idea and it really helps to maximize storage. Keep access in mind as well, having to climb a ladder to access will get old, but stairs take up a lot of space. Oh how about stairs on a cable and hinged so you can lower them down with an electric winch and then have great access to get up there. Yep just do that, you can thank me later. :)

Welcome to GJ!

I just found this thread last night, and sure would want to do it when I get my own freestanding garage: solar wall. Nearly free heat! Only one moving part:

Your high ceilings and location, you'll need all the help you can get! Plus, free heat. Well, nearly free. Did I mention it was free?

I've got lights already planned for under the shelf as that is where the workbenches and tool boxes, etc will sit. The retractable stairs are something I'm definitely interested in... got any links for ideas?

Also, if anyone has any info about attaching the diagonals to the poles, I'm all ears.

Wow how cool is that? How effective do you think it would be if the building were not facing true solar south? The only downside I see is that in the summertime there are so many trees, I'm not quite sure how much sun the shop is actually going to get. I hope to find out soon, winter has been dragging on a bit too long around here for my tastes!

Wonder why the PO made such a tall barn? Definitely screaming for a lift.

He wanted to be able to service all of the equipment/vehicles he owned... which include a Winnebago and a late 60's vintage Fiat Allis bulldozer :) I already have a lift ready to go from my previous shop, can't wait to get it in!

You don't want this thing working in the summertime. Foliage is a plus in that regard.:D
You could just easily rig the same solar-powered fan to pull air through the shop, though.

You could also build a free standing unit, pointed the way you want it, and some tilt can be more efficient anyway. But think of this: the exterior wall or walls getting hit by the sun are absorbing solar heat anyway. Why not grab it and transfer it inside on a large scale?

You can also just start off with individual heater boxes for each window. These are brutally simple and don't even need a fan.

Point your google image search towards "solar heater box" for many explanatory pics and draw-rings.

Some more comments:

Your first post, first sentence: search button? You use that? I just use google, "garagejournal.com proto screwdriver", for example. Works great! Am I missing much?

You have all those windows and now you have big banks of flourescents? Ha! I'm in an underground basement garage with an LED headlamp strapped to my noggin.:lol_hitti

I am adding lights as I can, though.

My idea for shelf access: a ladder, or stairs that store vertically, either way, stored vertically up high, on a cable and pulley system with a counterweight. Have you ever seen bottom of an NYC fire escape? Of course, put it some place where if you want to keep it in down position for a week it won't muck up the works completely. Hmm, put counterweight inside big PVC pipe on the wall in case of cable/hardware failure.

You know who else likes windows? Specifically, peeking in them at night?

Yea me too. I've done a a few turbocharged m3's, including a couple twin turbo setups and one time a turbo and a super :3gears:. If you have a question let me know, I love m3's way too much.

I did a quick google search for retractable stairs and fold up stairs and got a few links here for you:

Hopefully this helps, it would be awesome if you built this then I could take credit for the idea. :)

That's very promising shop tucked into the woods . . . NICE !!

QUESTIONS:
. . . . . . What does the . . . O.R. . . . stand for ??

. . . . . . Will you be improving the slider door with roll-up door to seal shop??

You'll get this same question over and over about your location, so would be good to . .
Update GJ Profile with City/State.

My .02 for the upper "shelves" would be wire cage so natural light will come through. You could build perimeter support of Uni-Strut with a roller trac attachment that you could hook a hanging ladder. Industrial look could be maintained with underside conduit for electrical running to LED lights.

P.S. Enlargement of cabin house (double it's size) would be easy after cutting down tree that's too close anyway up front, and just build over the front deck area.

Thanks man, done lots of turbo conversions but never on an M3, might need to pick your brain on this one.

LOL no Bigfoot sightings... YET! Although he might be out there in all those woods.

Hopefully this helps, it would be awesome if you built this then I could take credit for the idea. :)

Thanks for the legwork, I've been meaning to look around but for the time being I am focused on the shelf itself, since I need to get stuff off the floor to finish the shop out! I'll check all of those out!

O.R. = Operating Room (but Sports Car O.R. rhymes lol)

No plans to replace the slider door, but will do my best to seal it off. It has a couple latches to pull it tight to the building and I'm going to insulate it. Gonna brute force heat the place with a wood stove since we have just about limitless wood supply here.

Uni-Strut is amazing stuff (I would much rather do it that way!) but he already has everything I need to build it out of wood so I will be framing it up. My plan is to run 45 degree wooden brackets (combo 2x8 and 2x6) from the outer edges of the shelf to cleats on the 6x6 wood poles.

Yeah, the trees close to the cabin need to be dealt with. The missus loves them of course, but man we've got plenty of trees haha. For now my focus is on the shop, but who knows? The cabin is big enough for now but you're right, could easily be built out.

I hope to have pics of a proto-shelf section up soon, gotta go volunteer at the humane shelter for a couple hours and then get back here to work on it! This is going to be a productive weekend!

Sorry it's been a while, been busy working out in the shop.

Project Mezza-Loft is complete! Now the shop has a useful storage area in what would otherwise be wasted space with a 16ft ceiling.

What we were starting with:
0325151957a.jpg

I started in the corner:
040315143001.jpg

0403151430a01.jpg

...then built out over to the slider door, and towards the other side of the shop:
040415174601.jpg

040615173001.jpg

0406151732b01.jpg

Finally, finished off the top with a layer of 19/32 OSB:
0406151733b01.jpg

0406151733a01.jpg

Finally, view from the loft:
0406151733c01.jpg

That's as far as I am going with it for now, there is another section to be built but can't do it until I build the dividing wall for the shop. It's what I need to get stuff off the floor and out of the way so that I can start putting things in place and get to work.. but first...

DRYWALL. Coming soon! Cheers!

Wow that looks amazing, I would love to be able to talk the wife into a place in the woods like that but I know it's out of the question
