Just read the whole story, very nice. Like what you did on everything. I seen your white cabinrt with the wheels on it, and the checkered pattern and was thinking you should put a couple of car mirrors on the sides. Maybe one next to the paper towel
holder, just a crazy idea. OK back to you.

Coho911 - glad my garage made it onto your computer!

BUGTHUG - ain't seen too many mirrors that fit the spyder theme, but always looking out for something that will fill a spot!

Predator - here are a couple of other pics of the house. We are just about to put a new 'alfresco' area out the back ready for next summer:)

Clarifixer - I think this photo of Jerry Seinfeld sums up the size of the car - as most would know he is a passionate Porsche collector, but not many would know he owns 3 of the original 550s built:bowdown:

My house is a post war 1948 English clinker brick. Australia has a diverse range of architectural designs based mainly on periods such as - Victorian, Federation, Edwardian, Art deco, etc. These days they all look the same:(

Well, it's been a while since I have posted here, but I thought I would just update you all on the final piece to my garage - the mural for the inside of the door. The photo is of 550-0017 at the Sebring 12 hour race in 1955 - one of my all time favourite Porsche 550 images. It works perfectly with the perspective of the garage!

It was a joke. :bounce:

This is why I call myself Cavallino, because I like Porsches as much as Ferrari's. Not everybody knows the story of how that horse went from Stuttgart to Maranello/Modena and the fact Enzo Ferrari didn't have a clue his greatest oponent was going to use the same horse in it's logo.

Sketch

Type 550, to show that my interest in Spyders is not a recent one, here is a freehand pen-and-ink-and-watercolor I made during vacation in the summer of 1972. It's based on a photo or print in Road & Track, if memory serves, and not good at all, but the subject is a good one!

You have many hidden talents Andres:beer:

I have many books on how to do car illustrations and did a lot of freehand car rendering during my design course as part of my industrial design stream. I still enjoy doing the same is sketch books in my spare time.

I have recently had my spyder featured in Aircooled Classics magazine which is an online magazine available through the apple store for ipads. A web version is available soon. I got a nice 6 page spread and cover shot which I was happy about:)

Wow, I've never seen this thread before, if I had I'd have been all over it. Back in 1995 (when I was 15) my aunt gave me a 365 cars in 365 days calender, the Beck 550 was one of those days. I wish I still had it because if I did I could tell you the exact day that my obsession with the 550 started.

In 2004 I was able to take a trip to California to see the builders in person and I have to ask about your recommendations of Vintage and Fibersteel. The shops I was able to tour were Beck, Thunder Ranch, and Fibersteel (which had a Vintage) I was impressed with all three, but they all offered a very different product. Beck (Chamonix) seems to be the guys to go with if you want a turnkey or nearly turnkey car. Their warehouse was full of them, and they were happy to let me drive one around the neighborhood. Thunder ranch on the other hand was more kit oriented and would be happy to sell you as much or as little as you wanted. Tom (the owner of Thunder Ranch) seems to be more of a hot rodder too and is all about tailoring the car to you specifically (they have a wide body kit, an extended kit, and then there's their "Water Spyder" which uses a WRX flat 6 in place of the VW flat four) Tom also took me over to Fibersteel which does not make 550s, but rather "outfits" them. Fibersteel makes latches, grills, seats, straps and the like to finish out each kit to your liking. At fibersteel they had a Vintage Spyder and I must admit the nose didn't look quite right to me, it's a hard shape to nail just right and it just seemed that they missed it just a bit. These were just my impressions though, some day when I have a little cash on hand I think I'll be giving Thunder Ranch a call.

Your car is absolutely fantastic in every way, mine will be white also (probably with red stripes though) I also suffer from an industrial design education and love what you've managed to do with the space you've got. I'd love to know more about doing the murals also. THIS is my grand plan, and I still haven't figured out how to apply the mural to the cabinet faces. Although I think I've actually settled on THIS as the image, which is made up of thousands of little 1 by 2 inch "inspiration" images that I've collected over the years, which means the resolution has to be decent.

Love the garage, love the car. I look forward to your input on my Spyder kit impressions.

Kit (that's actually my name)

type550,

A very interesting thread and was enamored with all that you have accomplished in your garage/shop space.

I too am a fan of the 550, however, will only be able to appreciate these cars from afar. One of the fellows that worked on the restoration of my '63, 356 B Cab, owns a 550 as well as several 356 Carrera 2's. He started collecting the 356-C2's while a teenager during the early 1970's. A really smart guy!

Anyway, thought you would enjoy this picture I took during last year's Kirkland Concours d'Elegance.

Ody.

HI Kit,

you certainly have done your homework when it comes to the replica 550s! Fibersteel have started producing their own 550 from their own molds and the quality and accuracy are very good. There is still a heap I need to do to my spyder and I am just about to start lining the interior with aluminium panels like the originals. With the murals, I have a creative background in both jobs and education, so compared to my lack of skills of engine building and a like, these I find easy to create in little time. When working with a small space, there is a lot of compromise to make it work. More than a year on it hasn't changed much and is still very functional.

Ody,

is that the 550A your mate has or does he own another (original or replica?) On my website I have set myself the impossible task of tracking all the RS550s which sometimes proves a challenge until you get an email from someone who has one of the missing ones hidden away - it is always a delight:thumbup: I have seen the polished one before also and met the owner last year at The Porsche Race Car Classic when I came over to the US - nice car!

thanks Andrew

The garage has remained in a managed state and works well with the work area and spyder area. I have a number of other projects on at the moment, including designing some vintage race posters promoting the victories of Spyder racing in the 50s. It is an exciting project and the first should be ready in the next few weeks to download. To keep the Spyder spirit alive, I have been very active on my type550 facebook page which promotes everything Porsche 550 spyder, along with my website

My spyder has featured in a couple of magazines recently. Here are some pics.

These are from the Australian GP race track at Albert Park in Melbourne

How did you get this done ? My current garage door is just a plain brown "thing"...I'd like to add something onto it to make it more appealing. How much weight did you add to the gate by putting up the picture ? Also, I just noted you have no lock on the gate... I do, with metal studs running from the center to the lower corners... :-(

Hi Ocsar,

I mounted it on forex board and both screwed and liquid nailed it to the battons I had fitted. I am lucky that the locking mechanism of the door is on the outside front, so I didn't have any parts in the way of the poster. There is a little bit of additional weight to the door, but I have had no issues with it

thanks Andrew

Gorgeous car! Love the style of your garage also.
Kust wondering how you go without a front number plate. Any hassles?
Also the no roll bar.

It is a great painting Oscar of 550-0017 at the 1955 Sebring. It is the same car on my garage door. I have seen it a few times on the web, but not the original - thanks for sharing!

I haven't posted for a while, but after doing a panel fabrication course, I am going to try my hand at making some inner panels for my Spyder plus a tonneau out of aluminium. I have just ordered an english wheel and I have most of the other tools to start - let the games begin:eyecrazy:

I recently got my rims powdercoated black like the original 550-0016 - I think they have come up a treat...

Many thanks for the update! The posters are great, might have to have one for my shop - I don't think my 928 would mind at all.
