Wow, I've never seen this thread before, if I had I'd have been all over it. Back in 1995 (when I was 15) my aunt gave me a 365 cars in 365 days calender, the Beck 550 was one of those days. I wish I still had it because if I did I could tell you the exact day that my obsession with the 550 started.
In 2004 I was able to take a trip to California to see the builders in person and I have to ask about your recommendations of Vintage and Fibersteel. The shops I was able to tour were Beck, Thunder Ranch, and Fibersteel (which had a Vintage) I was impressed with all three, but they all offered a very different product. Beck (Chamonix) seems to be the guys to go with if you want a turnkey or nearly turnkey car. Their warehouse was full of them, and they were happy to let me drive one around the neighborhood. Thunder ranch on the other hand was more kit oriented and would be happy to sell you as much or as little as you wanted. Tom (the owner of Thunder Ranch) seems to be more of a hot rodder too and is all about tailoring the car to you specifically (they have a wide body kit, an extended kit, and then there's their "Water Spyder" which uses a WRX flat 6 in place of the VW flat four) Tom also took me over to Fibersteel which does not make 550s, but rather "outfits" them. Fibersteel makes latches, grills, seats, straps and the like to finish out each kit to your liking. At fibersteel they had a Vintage Spyder and I must admit the nose didn't look quite right to me, it's a hard shape to nail just right and it just seemed that they missed it just a bit. These were just my impressions though, some day when I have a little cash on hand I think I'll be giving Thunder Ranch a call.
Your car is absolutely fantastic in every way, mine will be white also (probably with red stripes though) I also suffer from an industrial design education and love what you've managed to do with the space you've got. I'd love to know more about doing the murals also.
THIS is my grand plan, and I still haven't figured out how to apply the mural to the cabinet faces. Although I think I've actually settled on
THIS as the image, which is made up of thousands of little 1 by 2 inch "inspiration" images that I've collected over the years, which means the resolution has to be decent.
Love the garage, love the car. I look forward to your input on my Spyder kit impressions.
Kit (that's actually my name)
