Thanks -- I'm in one of those situations: Don't have a table to build a table.

May just order the miter saw and table as well. I have a big 12" Dewalt at my studio .. and while I like my small old original 8.5 Hitachi -- it's the dust. I can't have the dust.

The kapex miter saw is one of those tools festool people swear by... I guess it's really good. That said, you might also look at the Bosch glide:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004323NNC/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It's half the cost and if you do some searching people have been able to do some mods and get really good dust collection out of it too... When it comes time for me to build a miter station, I'm gonna give it a shot.

Keep you fingers out of the line of the blade (yeah pretty smart thinking, I know.)

Stand to one side of the blade, if you get a kick back, you're less likely to get tagged with flying piece of wood, including a bag tag.

I did nick my finger once, trying to cut a piece that I knew was too small (fortunately it was a minor cut and it healed quickly.) I also once had a piece kick back and hit me right between the eyes, fortunately I was wearing safety glasses, but it still hurt like crazy.

The stupid thing is I knew better...my dad WAS the high school shop teacher, so I'd learned those things as a young boy. In both cases it was a simple matter of getting careless. That's the thing - like any potentially dangerous pastime you have to plan ahead, take the necessary precautions, don't let your guard down, and think, and you'll be fine.

I just got back from buying a couple sheets of 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood for an upcoming project. :) The place where I bought them also carries quite a few fine hardwood and exotic woods - besides domestic stuff like walnut, cherry, etc. they have mahogany, zebra wood and a bunch of other stuff. They also have a bin of scraps and offcuts they sell by the pound, I picked up a few scraps of walnut and may try making some file handles or something on the lathe this winter.

No Offense, but the Kapex appears to be the biggest POS Tool that Festool makes. The Festool forum is full of complaints where the motors burn out after a year or two. They are initially covered under the 3 years warranty, but after that, it's about a $600 repair. Keep in mind, a Kapex currently costs around $1,500!

I have Festool sanders and vacs and I have Bosch sanders and vacs. (Did I mention I hate sanding! After spending about $3,500 on Festools over the years - I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Stick with something like Bosch unless your the kind of guy that buys something because of the name brand...

The best sander I own (I use the most) is the yellow one in front - a Mirka Ceros. It basically acts/feels like an air sander

and yes, Ryan considers me a 'festool hater' :)

I thought they fixed the motor issue finally?

In any case, this guys advice is worth a lot more than my own. Keep in mind, I’ve only been doing this for a year.

I wouldn't say that :)

Getting back to the Kapex - as far as I know, and I have not really been keeping up on it, Festool refuses to acknowledge there is an actual problem with the Kapex

Just this morning I was watching a Youtube video primarily because of a newer type pocket hole machine made by Castle (it uses a lower angle so the parts align easier)

In any case - the guy has a Kapex hooked up to a Festool Vac, and I couldn't help but think that they call this dustless????? Here is a screen grab of the guy cutting a board

Ryan, did you ever build kitchen cabinets, I thought that was what spawned the whole festool buying frenzy
