Would like to add.

MATCO part number SP8230slides. Search SUNRSRBslideC2 (SUNEX part #) and save up to 50% on same thing through various tool websites.

Note: I would not know this had CJ Senior Member efb16acrx not given me the lead which I am grateful for. Leaky

I did a search on the forum and couldn't find anything. Who makes the Snap-on cordless impacts?

good question, actually...i believe it's some company that snap on owns...just like their air tools...although, i could be wrong

and as far as the matcos go...i would think possibly makita?

Very interesting thread. I have a couple of observations.

My Snapon dealer is the only dealer who comes to my work to look after my tool needs.

For the most part Snapon tools are good quality and I use them every day.

As some of the others have pointed out, although the other tools may be made in the same factory as the Snapon they are not exactly the same. Apart from the cosmetics I like the ergonomics of the Snapon better.

I have some Matco, Mastercraft (Canadian Tire brand lifetime warranty) , Craftsman, Princess Auto Powerfist and Pro Point, Proto, Lisle, Toolex and Mac. But if I need warranty I have to go somewhere to get it. My time is valuable and I can't afford to chase all over to 15 different places. These brands are good for for oddball items that are not used every day. But when one of my cheap tools breaks and I need it more than twice, I go for a Snapon replacement. I mean my dealer brings it to me.

That said I would find this thread useful for the odd item that might be rarely used and/or very expensive. Otherwise I'm willing to pay considerably more for the reasons I have outlined.

With all due respect, I hear this from SnapOn aficionados here all the time. Wouldn't it still be cheaper to get a spare for this "breaks but I don't have time to drive around to get a replacement one" tool? I mean, how often does it happen and if so, how much effort is it to drive down to Sears/Menards/AutoZone/etc to get a replacement tool? Wouldn't the cost savings on the tool (plus the spare) still be more than paying a lot more for the truck brand just because your dealer brings it to your doorstep? Let's be honest. How often do your tools break that you couldn't finish your job for the day because you didn't have a Plan B?

I see he lives in Canada and unless your living in bum **** nowhere there is a canadian tire nearby, I have one an 15 mins away and another 1 hour away... Most of my tools are mastercraft maximum/craftsman etc... No truck brand tools and I wrench often and can't remember the last time I broke one... My friend who is a mechanic and has been for 15+years uses most of the same and he rarely breaks any tools and if he does it's off to canadian tire/sears for a replacement...

He told me before snap on/truck brand is great for certain things but to spend huge money on sockets, screwdrivers etc...it isn't really worth it. He can get canadian tire/craftsman for 1/5 of the price and have a few backups and still cost less and they are all nearby for replacement under warranty anyday, anytime almost and not need to wait till the snap on guy comes back in a week or so... It's something I've heard before for truck brand lovers but I can't say I agree... Still not worth it unless you destroy your tools everyday

Danaher makes everything under the sun and goes way beyond hand tools. German owned Cooper Group owns many tool brands as well (Weller, Plumb, Lufkin) to name a few. The two companies created a new company to sell their hand tools. It is called Apex.

Don't know if mentioned already. But from what I researched the older style SO split beam style torque wrenches were made by Precision Instruments for many years, same wrenches with different colored inserts/labels. You can get them for almost 1/2 the price directly from PI. I believe CDI now has the contract to make the SO torque wrenches as of a few years ago. hth

I've got some Bahco sockets, wrenches and ratchets, some with Harley Branding and some without.

Is this a trick question? Who's buried in Grants tomb? Snap On makes Snap On impacts. In the award winning Snap On plant in Murphy NC.

This thread needs to become unsticky. There is very little accurate information here about truck tool equivalents.

In a shop you can make an argument for the best tool and service, at home a cheaper tool will probably be fine. There is pride of ownership but some guys just want something that will probably get the job done for the least amount. I've often heard that xxxx tool is just as good as snap on, I've never heard it the other way, great compliment to snap on really. Not every tool snap on sells is the best and they don't make everything they sell but, if you're talking about wrenches, ratchets, sockets, pliers, most hand tools really, snap on is the best . Most pros will acknowledge that. It's the price people have a problem with but you're always going to pay more for the best. My tool choices are snap on, cornwell and craftsman in that order. I may need to reconsider craftsman since they are making a lot of their tools in china now. Probably 90% of my tools are snap on and I wish the other 10% were.

I've got a load of CAT tools, which are identical to snap on. I'll try get some numbers on Monday when I'm back at work. Set of prybars, 3/8 and 1/2 torque wrenches, deep chrome 1/2 sockets. flexhead sockets. spanners... all identical bar branding.

What do they run on prices?

Matco DIM10B Dial indicator set/ Harbor Freight #5645,#623. 1/4 the price!!!
Again, there's a difference between an outright knock-off of questionable origin and quality, and an equivalent tool sold under a different branding scheme but sourced from the same supplier as the "truck" tool.

Is the Harbor Fright dial indicator a knock-off, or does Mac now buy from the same source as Hazzard Fraught?

CAT tools can be had for another 50% off if you are an employee!

False. I am a Cat employee. Our discount is 10-30% off depending on the tool. Most are around 15% off. Never seen anything near 50% off.

Cheaper for sure. You can only buy them direct from Cat.

Here is the full catalog, all the hardline sockets 1/4'' drive to 1/2'' drive are Snap On, 3/4'' and up are an unknown (to me) USA made brand. Wrenches are Snap On, but ratcheting wrenches are made in Taiwan.

1" drive are still Snap On, 1.5" are Proto. I can't remember if the 3/4" stuff is Snap On or Proto.

I agree that 50% is ridiculous, but I seem to remember that the discount on the 3/4" drive metric set was better than 40% off.

I dont know if 1'' drive is Snap On still, I bought some loose stock and all it said on the sockets were drive size and USA.

If the 3/4'' drive set is that good of a price, i may pick some up. Thanks!

Oh, and I stated earlier that Cat wrenches were Snap On... They are actually Williams, still good thou.

Were they impact or chrome sockets?

OK, I'm unsure of the chrome 1" sockets. The impact grade 1" are still made by Snap On.

I have case tools just like the cat guy & I have to do my warranty through snap on too. At the case dealership we get 10% above cost

The CAT tools are warrantied directly through the dealership, so thankfully no third party. I bought a "CAT" 1/2" torque wrench that came with a CAT logo on the wrench, but with a Snap On instruction manual.

The "CAT" air hammer was a Blue Point, box and all. For all I know, we may actually get 10% above cost or something like it. They just never tell us what cost IS.

I wish the dealership took care of our case tools an didn't want to push us off on snap on! Most of my case stuff seems to be either snap on or blue point but my 1/2 impact is definitely a ingersol with the case sticker. All of the hand tools have the case engraving, I'll run out into my garage an snap a few shots when I get done watching UFC

The SO belt tension gauge GA424A is apparently replaced by OTC 6673. Ordered one awhile back from my SO guy. Got it and it even says OTC on it. He was even surprised. Much cheaper to just get the OTC on Amazon
